Chuck Me Mondays - New Strategy - Final Selection

The CHUCK fans have spoken and we have a basic idea of where we want to go in the future with this event on Twitter. The fans have selected some form of Chuck Me Out as the new trending topic. So, here are the options (please comment on the one you like the most):

1. Chuck Me Out by itself with no hashtags anywhere in the tweet.

Positives:
No hashtags means Twitter cannot ban the common words. Also, since Chuck has trended on its own for various reasons, we could see that word trend on its own as a worst case scenario. People would click on the trending word and discover we were talking about the TV show.

Negatives:
One extra character used than if it was a hashtag. Fans used to typing in hashtags might forget and limit trending potential. Not instantly recognizable as related to the show.

Example:
Sarah is so pretty in this scene! Chuck Me Out

2. #chuckmeout by itself and no other hashtags.

Positives:
People already used to typing in hashtags should be comfortable with this new tag. It also makes searching for specific tweets easier and relates to the website and Twitter account of the same name. It also promotes NBC's campaign to get people to engage in the show on their site and watch the episodes on their site. It also uses less characters so you can tweet more letters.

Negatives:
Easier for Twitter to ban (if they are doing it) and prevent us from trending.

Example:
Captain Awesome has his shirt off again! #chuckmeout

3. #chuckmeout and Chuck Me Out together.

Positives:
Potential of trending either the hashtag or the non-hashtag term, or both. The word Chuck could trend on its own due to other people using it for non show related purposes. Includes the name of the Twitter account, the web site, and NBC's campaign name.

Negatives:
If the hashtag gets banned, it could mean every tweet using it gets banned, which would include the phrase Chuck Me Out (though, not permanently). This method also uses up more characters and so your messages have less content.

Example:
Morgan should really be with Anna. #chuckmeout chuck me out

  1. i prefer second option, but 3rd option is also ok :) (seems like i can`t use my openid account, comment form gave me an error message that my openid credentials could not be verified)

  2. Go with the second option & see how it goes. It's the simplest change. The trending results with the new hashtag over the next few weeks will tell us what's going on (i.e., not posting enough to trend vs. an evil Twitter conspiracy). We'll know if we don't trend or if we start high & stop again.

  3. I go with Option 2 - #Chuckmeout and no other hashtags. Simple, with NBC Website tie in.

  4. I prefer #Chuckmeout by itself. It's the easiest quickest way.

  5. 2nd option #Chuckmeout

  6. I also like just #chuckmeout. It's simple and short leaving more room for snarky messages.

  7. 2nd option. 3rd option is a lot of characters. Deal with the banning when you get to that bridge.

  8. 2nd option seems to be the best. Short sweet and to the point.

  9. Chuck Me Out as the ending flourish to tweets about Chuck, but start your tweeting day with a hashtag like "watching #chuck tonight - i love this episode, Chuck Vs. The Fat Lady!"
    Subsequent tweets:
"Captain Awesome has his shirt off! Chuck Me Out!" <--multiple tweets during the show - also keeps from annoying non-Chuck fan followers too much. : )
Seems to elude banning potential AND encourage trending.

  10. Hi Magnus: #chuckmeout gets my vote. Short, sweet, quick.

I've been experimenting with #chuckmeout.com and the #chuckmeout part is highlighted and added in to the #chuckmeout search pool. But it does let viewers see at a glance that it's a website.

I sincerely hope SerendipityWAF has some luck getting NBC to release cast and crew video content because as you can see on the site non-US fans are very upset about that restriction. Must be especially galling to the UK fans who really gave the "Footlong and Finale" campaign the impetus and news coverage needed that first weekend.

I'm looking forward to the officialization of CMMs viewing party, $5 footlong sub, and Twitter commentaries. Perhaps even with special guest cast/crew Twitter for the inauguration (now that they're all back at work in LA)?

I also don't think Twitter is banning us. I think we've just lost participants.

  11. I like #chuckmeout. Seems like it would be a more simple approach at first and maybe after a couple of weeks we will be able to tell if it is working as is or if we need to make any other changes.

  12. Hello there,

as an international viewer ( I live in Greece), I prefer the second option. I don't think Twitter will ban the hashtag. They didn't ban #iranelection when this hashtag started to accompany spam tweets.

  13. I like option 2 as well. Hopefully NBC will catch on to the fact that Chuck has an international fanbase and will start to lift the restrictions on the content.

  14. There are some things NBC CANNOT lift restrictions on (no matter how much they may want to). However, I am hopeful that they will work to lift restrictions on the content they own.

  15. I vote for #2 because if we're going to change strategy mid-stream, it's the easiest one for people to get on board with and it's the most similar to what we've been doing thus far.

Guildish - NBC is aware of the International restriction for content (they can't do much about the episodes b/c that's outside their control), but they did indicate that they are investigating if there's a way for them to resolve that problem. They can't make any (because again, it may fall outside their jurisdiction), but rest assured they care about the International fans and they are looking into ways to give you guys access to the home grown CMO content (like the vids from Ali Adler and Chris Fedak).

  16. Option 2 seems easiest. I agree with the person that said we can deal with the banning if/when it happens.

  17. I agree with going with #2, most people have used it already so it will be consistent. It's good branding. I don't thing Twitter is banning us, just a lack of participation.

With NBC actively partnering with fans now I think we can strive for more participants.

  18. I think option 2 or 3, if they want to ban us we will come up with something different =)

  19. #chuckmeout works for me. However, I think the lack of participation is also due to a lot of not being able to be on the computer at 9pm every monday to tweet. Even if your a fan and you really want to (like me) there are things that prevent it a lot of times. So I dont think we have a consistent number of ppl tweeting every week.

I know the experiment with tweeting all day on Monday didnt work...but what about extending the hours, like making chuck me mondays from 9pm - 11pm or something? Maybe we could have 3 chances to watch (9, 10, 11?)

I dunno, just throwing it out there...

  20. Good suggestion, Anjosie. We have considered extending the tweeting to more hours. The problem is that with the lack of participation, we would actually be using up the amount of tweets Twitter allows to count from each person at different hours. Currently, we have it set during that hour of viewing so everyone can join in.

Having said that, we might want to think about organizing a tweeting effort BEFORE we watch the episodes. So, one hour before... then watch and tweet less (but still tweet)... and maybe even an hour after.

If we had 1,000 people participating each week, we could definitely do multiple hours (like we did last night when Wendy and I hosted the viewing parties). But first we need more people to join in and that depends a lot on all of us.

  21. #2 plus I always include the episode title as a matter of course.

  22. Going with option number 2 please Monty! :-)

  23. #chuckmeout

But if we're using a hashtag, why are we going away from #chuckmemondays? Is it mainly to support the #chuckmeout effort?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I prefer option 2. The simplest I think.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I say either 1st or 2nd. Once you put it in once you can just copy and paste so it doesn't matter to me if it's 1 or 2. I don't like the 3rd option as it doesn't allow much room for typing in longer tweets.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Just keep it simple. Go with the first option.
