Papa B? For Burton, silly! -- Property of WB |
Alrighty then! You watched the episode and obviously loved it, so what did you think of it? Did the return of Sarah's dad live up to your expectations? How about Chuck and Sarah losing their money? Or their scheme? Also, what did you think of Sarah's
New Jersey Long Island accent?! How about her father's decisions at the end? How does it make you feel? Sit on the couch and tell us all about it.
Too soon? :D
ReplyDeleteMagnus, why, WHY? does IMDB show this as airing on the 25th? These things are very confusing.
ReplyDeletethis airs TONIGHT, the 18th, correct?
"Plotting with her pop and Chuck, Sarah at one point slips into a new persona, affording Strahovski a chance to tackle a Chuck first. “I get to do a whole new accent,” shares the actress, who to date has only (and just one time) used her native Aussie voice. “That’s something that I’ve never done!”
ReplyDeletewhat the f%@$ are they on? both the interviewer AND Yvonne Strahovski don't remember what happened in Chuck before season 4?

rich
Rich, she means she has never done a New Jersey accent. Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteI take it the Casey/Kathleen reunion will be underwhelming.
ReplyDeleteDaria
Refer to what I said about it in the Dear DR: The Final Five blog posting. :)
ReplyDeletelol. It does sound like they are trying to say she's never done an accent except for her native one before though. it was laughably poorly worded
ReplyDeleterich
You said that they won't interact for many episodes. Does that mean we'll get at least one more appearance by Kathleen before the season ends?
ReplyDeleteDaria
Daria, it means you will never see her again.
ReplyDeletehmm. do you mean to say magnus that they might give a clean resolution to something in Chuck? What a novel concept.
ReplyDeleterich
I would never say such things.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that. I have one more annoying question for you: Does Adam Baldwin object to the idea of his character having an ongoing romantic relationship? I sometimes get the feeling that he is the main reason why Casey has been celibate for so long.
ReplyDeleteDaria
Daria... very interesting question. Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteIs that your way of saying yes, or do you also wonder if that may be the case? :)
ReplyDeleteDaria
They shouldn't have even bothered with the Casey/Kathleen storyline. The resolution to it absolutely sucked. If they wanted to introduce a long lost daughter for the Colonel, her mother should have been dead.
ReplyDeleteDaria
I really enjoyed that episode.
ReplyDeleteMy reaction:
ReplyDeleteThat was one of the best episodes in quite awhile.
It was a fantastic episode. It had a strong Season 2 feeling to it.
ReplyDeleteAmazing episode. It felt like it properly balanced the sweet moments with the couple 'high tension' moments, and the beyond hilarious moments. Not sure what else to say.. but it was most definitely one of my favorite episodes, and that's not me living in the moment.
ReplyDeleteThis episode rocked. And you do, too. ;)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adored the flashbacks. And the flash face conversation rocked. Such a great thing to see Sarah´s attempt at flashing and it was so funny how Chuck believed he had such a cool flash face.
It was Chuck @ it's BEST-all things u ever loved about it wrapped in 1 great Ep.!
ReplyDeleteDD
Spoiler for tomorrow's CYT66: I am going to gush about this episode. :)
ReplyDeletethis ep reprented what CHUCK really is, a warm funny feel good show. and i loved awesome's "i'm in more superior form' line"
ReplyDeleteThis was a delightful episode. I laughed all the way through. I especially love the Devon/Clara/Jack interaction. I never would have expected those characters to share scenes but I'm so glad they did.
ReplyDeleteSarah's impersonation of Chuck trying to flash was SOOOOOOO Funny! ~ can't remember the last time we all laughed that hard during a Chuck episode...
ReplyDeleteSo it was awesome, but no preview for the next chuck? When is it on again? Or we taking another break?
ReplyDeleteDakota.
Looks like the next episode is in two weeks.
ReplyDelete*Sighs*This is part of why Chuck never gets good reviews, besides lack of promoting. The random stinking breaks and no promoting in between.
ReplyDeleteDakota
I was hoping we would learn if Chuck and Vivian are step siblings or not.
ReplyDeleteUgh, too much focus on Walker this week.
Great Sarah centric episode. Yvonne is so talented, she will be just fine when chuck ends/
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, we knew about the breaks some time ago (or maybe I'm just weird enough to follow NBC's synopsis releases... but yes, they should have just delayed it another week two weeks ago instead.)
ReplyDeleteI had a lot of fun. Funny, action-y enough, and poignant. Really good stuff. The Super Shuttle caricatures were a little off, but other than that, it was really fantastic.
I'm so glad you crossed off New Jersey and replaced it with Long Island. Both actresses definitely sounded more Long Island than Jersey to me. As someone who lives there, but wasn't raised there, Yvonne definitely did one of the more extreme versions of the accent. Like many places, there are variations in it depending on generation and location on the Island. She reminded me of a woman who greeted me at a wedding reception in Huntington many years ago.
ReplyDeleteMoving on...having Sarah imitate Chuck's flash was absolutely brilliant, but I also adored Chuck's reaction to it. How could he know what he looks like when he flashes? It was equally hilarious when Zac did the fake flash in so different a fashion than he does when Chuck really flashes.
Someone above was negative on the Casey and Kathleen development. I thought it was tremendously touching and positive. I didn't expect a romance to bloom, particularly after one encounter and so many years passed. It played out realistically for me and Adam nailed it. Maybe Casey and Kathleen aren't going to be a couple, but there are no lies going on anymore. That's a positive.
What else...the stuff in the van was very funny in how they played it out. Having Chuck trying to convince everyone he was a government agent and having no one buy it was cute. He rarely "comes out" to people about that.
Yeah, once I heard the accents I was like... no, that is NOT New Jersey. That is Long Island (or closer to that than anything in New Jersey).
ReplyDeleteNew Jersey accents are thicker and tend to leave off the "R".
I mostly didn't dig the Kathleen stuff. But everything else worked for me.
Shot you a tweet, but caught your response to the AV Club review, Magnus. You were all awesome with giving the dude props last week, and now he goes and ruins it. A shame.
ReplyDeleteI think we only have 1 week break not 2 weeks off
ReplyDeleteI will murder him tomorrow!!!! (on the podcast, I mean)
ReplyDeleteGranted, he didn't give it a bad review but he must pay anyway.
And it is two weeks until the next episode.
Fantastic episode...just bummed that we have to wait two weeks for another new episode!
ReplyDeleteI just realized that in the other posting I predicted CHUCK would go back up to 1.5... I forgot there are the NBA and NHL playoffs going on right now. Not sure what that means for certain local NBC stations.
ReplyDelete@Razorback
ReplyDeleteWhat didn't you like about the Kathleen stuff? I thought it was all well executed and believable...
It was awkwardly executed, outside of the final moments of their conversation. She follows him, on a mission, and Casey never noticed? Plus, then she is in the garage? It was all very hokey. Plus, I didn't find the actor delivered much for me, outside of the final moments of her speech. It just felt tacked on, especially when everything else was working so well. It probably should have been in the previous episode, or the next one.
ReplyDeleteI was negative about what happened between Casey and Kathleen because it was very rushed, and she seemed a little too okay with him faking his death. I realize that this isn't a realistic show, but the behavior of some of the characters seems to make less and less sense with every episode.
ReplyDeleteDaria
I don't know about local pre-emptions , but the last time I checked all the hockey games were on Versus and the NBA games were on TNT and ESPN . I think the rating will be a 1.4 for the first half , then a 1.3 for the 2nd half hour . How ever that equals out in finals we'll have to see .
ReplyDeleteSo during the 8 pm , there was wrestling , House , HIMYM , Mad Love , DWTS , a Chicago NBA game , Philadelphia-Buffalo NHL game not to mention some others :( Not expecting the greatest news tomorrow . Also the episode ROCKED , do that usually means the rtngs take a hit :(
I just hope Chucks rating is higher than the Event's .
So, Daria, every episode just gets worse and worse? Why are you still watching?
ReplyDeleteThe accent sounded very Long Island I think because Daphne, and in turn Sarah, were just kind of imitating the Jersey Shore kids; who are mostly from Long Island. To me it sounded more like Mike Myers doing Coffee Talk on SNl- and that's coming from a born and bred Jersey native! I applaud Yvonne though for just doing a normal American accent so everything else is gravy.
ReplyDeleteLoved the imitation of the flash face and the spy high five! Also like Jack's, "ah, she lives with the schnook!"
-OPD
Why am I not allowed to be critical of the show?
ReplyDeleteDaria
Diaria, criticism of the show is fine, but what you said is a blanket statement about the show that just isn't true. It happens every now and then but saying it like it is a perpetual problem makes you sound like one of those fan fic writers and they are BANNED FOR LIFE here.
ReplyDeleteThis was quite possibly the best episode for me this season. It was hilarious and touching at the same time. Razorback, if chuck gets cancelled will a channel like tbs pick it up and play the re-runs such as "Friends" or does that depend on how many seasons it runs live?
ReplyDeleteThe answer to your syndication question, Patrick, is in episode 61 of Chuck You Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteThis was an awesome episode, i absolutely loved it, no complaints! Its also interesting how well the episode worked with out the buy more
ReplyDeleteCaz
Do you mind just telling me breifly about syndication. Or answer this ? for me if you dont mind: Will Chuck have weekly or even daily reruns once it is cancelled?
ReplyDelete"I was negative about what happened between Casey and Kathleen because it was very rushed, and she seemed a little too okay with him faking his death. I realize that this isn't a realistic show, but the behavior of some of the characters seems to make less and less sense with every episode."
ReplyDeleteI think we were watching different shows at that point. In my view she wasn't remotely o.k. with Casey's actions. The subtext of "you have everything you wanted" is "and that didn't include me." The end was subtly accusatory, not just a simple acceptance. I thought both Adam Baldwin and whoever plays Kathleen did a nice job of conveying that.
Jim
There seems to be lots of praise for this episode, and I couldn't agree more. One point that hasn't been mentioned yet: The little girl who played young Sarah really nailed it. She even looked kind of like Yvonne.
ReplyDeleteJim
Hmm, nice episode and all but I don't understand the special praise it gets. It was okay even real good sometimes but nothing exceptional. Good humour, nice Sarah backstory but no developments, no goosebumps-moments. For me a nice filler that I enjoyed, in the ranking of this season somewhere in the middle - an episode like Seduction Impossible.
ReplyDeleteArsimo, it probably is because we have taste and you have lost your frakin' mind.
ReplyDeleteJust to add to my earlier reply to Magnus's "no taste and lost fraking mind":
ReplyDeleteYes, a lot of nice small thingies in this episode. Really fun, true.
But what big things did we see? No story developments and even the Sarah back story, although it is was really nice played, learnt us nothing fundamental new about Sarah or her relationship with her dad. Little Sarah helped her father with his cons? We already knew. Her father is running around because of his cons and takes or leaves Sarah when he needs/likes? We already knew. He loves her nonetheless in his own way and will not betray her? We already knew. He is in a way proud and happy that she choose eventually a different life than he? We already knew. He respects and even cares about Chuck? We already knew.
Also no real new developments between Chuck and Sarah or in their relationship this time. And that happened even in the least interesting episodes this season.
An episode with a lot to enjoy because of the many funny, nice, well acted, heartwarming, touching small things/scenes but on the other side delivered nothing substantial.
So my conclusion, very nice episode but nothing more. Certainly not one the greats, not of this season and certainly not one of the whole series.
(I wrote this also on another board)
Looks like the comment I tried to send from my iPod didn't go through.
ReplyDeleteI wondered, though, why Kathleen suddenly recognised Alex from seeing the side of his face in Buy More when, in season 3, she didn't recognise him standing there in her own home.
Aside from that minor niggle, I really did enjoy this episode. I said it before, but I do really think that proper on-location shooting in new places improves the show a million times more than X foreign country in front of a green screen. That's one of the main common denominators between (most of) the best episodes of this season and season 2, which seemingly everyone perceives to be the best.
Arsimo, an episode doesn't need to forward the plot to be awesome. In fact, some of the best episodes haven't done much of anything for the grand scheme of things. If you are going to base your opinion of an episode on how much more was added to the bigger picture, then that is your deal. The reason why we loved it is because it was a hell of a well executed episode (outside of the Kathleen and Casey stuff, at least from my perspective).
ReplyDeleteRazorback/DR/Marcus, I agree 100% that it was a well executed episode, I enjoyed it very much and I will rewatch several times for sure.
ReplyDeleteBut it was not only the bigger picture that was skipped. Like I explained for example the back story of Sarah was quite hollow, we didn't discover anything new basically. Was it fun to watch this back story? Sure. Well acted etc? Absolutely.
But the omission of progress in the story in both the big as the small picture prevents it for me to be a great one that deserves praises like "best of the season" etc. Despite the great fun and excellent execution.
Really great episode. I loved when Chuck "flashed" on the wedding planner and Sarah's rehearsed "Chuck, did you just flash?".
ReplyDeleteAlso, Sarah doing the flash face and then running behind Chuck asking why he didn't like it. Yvonne was amazing in this episode - really pulled off the funny and heartwarming stuff. And I loved the scenes between Chuck and Sarah - they were really funny. Almost forgot Chuck "exposing himself" in the shuttle.
In regards to Arsimo's comments, I gotta disagree that every episode has to have some bigger meaning to be important.
ReplyDeleteA show that is all plot moving forward without characters we care about is "The Event". Chuck doesn't have that show's problems.
It's episodes like "The Wedding Planner" that deepen our appreciation for our characters and makes us care about them when the grander arc takes over.
Chuck can't just be arc episodes in which we get big revelations and it can't just be standalone character episodes. It works as a series because it has both.
Arsimo, we were given a clearer definition of Sarah's emotional development and what made her who she was. It contrasted who she became once she met Chuck. That is essentially what that dance was about, the separation of worlds. Was it necessary toward the overall plot? We can talk about that at the end of the season.
ReplyDeleteP.S.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever call me Marcus again, I will hunt you down, find you, and beat you like Jay and Silent Bob.
dkd, if we get a 5th season, I would actually suggest that they write more self contained episodes, not less.
ReplyDelete@Razorback/DR/M..(oops): okay, at the end of the season. Maybe I come back on my opinion. For now, respectfully not.
ReplyDelete(Carefull with your hunting btw, some very dangerous guys owe me some favors and even Sarah & Casey would think twice to go in discussion with them. Let say Alexei Volkoff would have hired them on the spot in his days)
My name is Magnus, Arsemouse.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am afraid of the guys who owe you favors. But my family doesn't owe me any favors and they would avenge me ten times over.
Arsemouse talks a lot of crap on other chuck sites. ignore him..... loved the episode for all reasons already told.
ReplyDeleteI will do the personal attacks around here, thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteArsemouse, hmm, that's a new one. Not a very good one, granted, but originality is a big plus in my book.
ReplyDeleteMagnus, attack and hunt me what you like, it's your blog - I respect that. I am only not so impressed and amused by personal attacks of anonymous posters (and I don't write on other Chuck sites too, only on the IMDb board)
Not a very good one? So, it matches the essence of your comments.
ReplyDeleteI believe that makes it perfect.
Aha, you came to my new name because mouses instead of people are talking sense out of their arse? That's great wisdom Magnus, even for someone like you who has already a magnificent reputation in that area.
ReplyDeleteArsimo, I realize now that I have overestimated you.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, let's get back to what is important... me.
Looks like your 1.5 prediction will probably come in right on.
ReplyDeletesonofabitch it stayed at 1.3
ReplyDeleteWait for the final ratings... you will see. Here comes 1.5!
ReplyDeleteI hope youre right about the finals, but we'll see. At least we beat event\LOLA.
ReplyDeleteEven if it stays at 1.3, what do you think this does with the word you were hearing out of NBC before? Same (because ratings werent renewing this anyways) or does this change things?
"dkd, if we get a 5th season, I would actually suggest that they write more self contained episodes, not less."
ReplyDeleteI agree. With all the major life changes done, I'd rather them not try to perpetually top themselves with more major arcs.
I'd love for them to do what you suggest.
Yikes, I was so hoping you were right again. Stupid loser playoffs (that the Celtics better win), stupid warm weather...stupid, stupid American audience. Seriously, how are we a super power?
ReplyDeleteJ says ...
ReplyDeleteWell at least 1.3 ( for the time being ) topped the night for NBC . How sad is that ?
I had a wonderful time watching this episode. Maybe I am just overly easy to please, but I really didn't take issue with any aspect of it. What I took from Kathleen being able to follow Casey without him knowing was that he was preoccupied, and that she didn't pose enough of a threat to set off his radar. I can use my imagination for any further resolution between the two.
ReplyDeletePossibly my favorite moment was in the beginning when they were practising the fake flash.
Everyone make a flash face !!! LOL
ReplyDeleteI had to replay that 20 times.
Sarah's face ... Chuck's reaction ... 100% classic Chuck !!! It's things like that which make the show great not will Chuck and Sarah ever get married, have kids, a normal like?
Con the entire inteligence community, hear the sound of the styrofoam cake being cut, schnook, copy face ... all classic Chuck
TS
I loved the episode, it was fantastic but one little scene was interesting. Is Sarah going to have a drinking problem or something?
ReplyDeleteI say this because they focused on Sarah with the bottle of whiskey. It's probably nothing but that scene really caught my attention.
isa
I loved the episode. The ending was my favorite chuck and sarah ending in a while.
ReplyDeletethat whiskey sure gets around!
the people making this show have some very fixed ideas: if you are going on a romantic vacation, it must be in france. If you are drinking cause you're depressed, its whiskey.
rich
Arismo, do you even watch the show?
ReplyDeleteThis episode so adds to the sarah back story...we find out that before sarah went on the run with her dad...she lived with a grandma instead of mom...we learnt that she wanted to travel with her dad and live an adventurous life...this explains her attraction to men like bryce, cole and plywood. This also explains why chuck is so important to her now...someone reliable who will not let her down and always put her first...
We also learnt that she is a very, very different person now then to who she was before...apart from the free and easy banter with chuck..she got conned..this whole episode showed how ingrained the con life was into her..she knew every con by heart and practice them with her dolls...and so for her to be conned is a really big personality change.
An episode like this that stops along the journey to show how a character has changed and progressed is not a bad thing.
If We were to be really poetic about it..that ballerina in the pilot was sarah in her eyes...a little girl in need and chuck was there and the rest is history....quite a beautiful thing Arismo you phillistine.
The episode was A M A Z I N G!!
ReplyDeleteI think they wrap up perfect the situation with Kathleen and Yvonne is so awesome doing comedy
Magnus is there any chance If we get another season to change Chuck's wardrobe he wears those ugly t-shirts repeatedly.... sorry for my complain
But Sarah this year is Sarah nothing like last year's problems with her lipstic
nena
Really enjoyed this episode. Didn't really enjoy all the Tweeting I did during it..... Whatever it takes, right?
ReplyDeleteI don't know why you are tweeting during the episode. Just tweet whatever silly fan campaign thing you got going on AFTER or BEFORE the episode. The Internet stays awake during either of those hours.
ReplyDeleteYeah. It was pretty silly wasn't it? I just want a renewal....
ReplyDeleteThis is what I find annoying about 99% of "fan campaigns." They suck out the joy of why you are campaigning in the first place and literally exhaust people right out of the fandom.
ReplyDeleteIf you do NOTHING, it will have almost the exact same result as if you do too much. Next time, enjoy the episode and do all that other stuff after.
solid episode. brought back memories of the good old days. where there was a brilliant episode every week. Season 2. Hope they can continue the run and NOT GET CANCELLED.
ReplyDeleteHello Amrit,
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the episode so much. So did I, no misunderstanding about that.
But all those things you learned about Sarah this episode was already known to those who paid serious attention to all the episodes before. Granted, the grandmother was new but was that so important and essential, did it teach us something about Sarah and her character development?
All the changes to the characters including Sarah are the main reason I watch the show. Not the spy stuff, not the humor, not the romance. I like those very much but they are not my main interest in Chuck. I expected to learn about Sarah this episode but it delivered as good as nothing in this asspect. Yes, a lot of fun and enjoyment, also to me. But unfortunately nothing new about the saga and its protagonists, not on a large scale, not on minor scale. Too bad, missed change in my opinion.
Let me just translate what Arsimo is saying:
ReplyDelete"I decide me no like da asspect! No argument change mind! Argh!"
There you go.
That's unfair Magnus. I give arguments and examples for my point of view. Amrit doesn't understand my arguments (which is very clear) and "accuses" me of exactly the opposite of what I say and think. With incorrect and invalid arguments.
ReplyDeleteBit okay, fine, can happen, so I explain it better. I made two, three typos in my hurry (change instead of chance) but I expect that an intelligent reader can skip those.
Disappointing reaction. Ah well.
Arsimo, we all can agree that it is disappointing how much effort you are putting into being wrong. Now, quit while you are ahead. This is the CHUCK and DR site, not Arsimo's personal blog space of his ridiculousness.
ReplyDeleteArsimo,
ReplyDeleteWhile i agree there wasnt a ton of new ground made with Sarah, a lot of previous stuff was more fleshed out. Im fine with this, as it helps us get to understand a lot more about Sarah and why she is who she is, how and why she became the superspy that she is and why Chuck is perfect for her (and also why it took so much for her to let her guard down and let him in).
The show doesnt always have to be pushing forward in major ways for the show to be satisfying. As it is, the show already moves forward at a pretty rapid pace, and a lot has been left un-fleshed out or been very rushed over the course of 4 seasons. Taking the time to really get to know some more about Sarah's backstory was, imho, a good thing.
Am I the only one that almost expected the camera to go over the pig at the end, with it now changed to 'adventures with chuck'.
Well I think there was more Sarah back story in CVT Wedding Planner than in CVT CAT Squad.
ReplyDeleteOr at least I cared more about this back story then the one in CAT Squad.
TS
Magnus, you said "enjoy the ride" a few weeks ago, and it was the best suggestion: this is what I actually did, and this was really the more "enjoyable" episode in a long time.
ReplyDeleteMaybe not the best, or the more intense, but well, I am only sorry for those who are not watching it, because they don't know what they are missing. Or maybe they know it, so I am sorry for their poor taste!
I there will be no season 5, I know that I will miss this show...
Thanks for being so awesome, Magnus! I loved this episode, I have faith in a 1.5! Just you wait :)
ReplyDeleteKimber
aand... 1.3 final. damn.
ReplyDeleteI have a question related to an answer you gave in the "Final 5" spoiler section. You said there would be hotness in coming episodes, but you weren't sure if it would be cut.
ReplyDeleteTwo episodes in, is the hotness still to come or was it in the two episodes we've seen and got cut?
PLAIN AND SIMPLE. ONE OF THE BEST EPISODES EVER. Sarah imitating the Flash face, is probably my favorite moment in Chuck history. LOL!
ReplyDeleteI quite enjoyed the ending, and I'm PUMPED for the remaining episodes.
Any passionate scenes coming up? Or intimate?
ReplyDeleteCurious-anon
Fav episode of the season. Best Yvonne episode to date, IMO. Me thinks Sarah needs to show more skin to gets these ratings up. Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, I really don't care if we get a 5th season. Even though I'm still watching, I'm starting to feel like this wedding (if it happens) should be the end. I didn't feel that way after season 2, less so after season 3, and really don't give a flying crap now.
I will miss your witty teaser though. Hopefully you'll pick up a new favorite show after the NBC gods have decided that our little show has run it's course.
