So, start here by ordering season 5 on DVD ($29.99) or Blu-Ray ($36.99). Then order the other seasons. Or wait for the box set in... a year or ten (I have no clue why there is a boxy thing at the end of each link, blame Amazon). I get a massive 4% of every sale.

  1. Razorback, I was going to wait until the S5 DVD was released in Australia. Would it be more beneficial to buy from Amazon or it doesn't matter as long as I buy it?

To be honest the end left me with a bitter taste so much so I didn't want to buy the S5 dvd. However, Yvonne (and Zach) have put some much effort and class to bring Sarah & Chuck to life, that no matter what I feel about the end, their performances & these characters deserve to be appreciated. So I'll buy the DVD. To support them & if a movie happens, that'll be the bonus.

    1. I don't think there is any region with bigger sales numbers than the US, at least for CHUCK. I've never heard of some massive CHUCK home video sales anywhere else, unlike a show like HEROES where sales in parts of Asia were huge.

  3. Hey DR, remember a few months back when we were talking about saving money and there being a complete series box set? Well the producers are making it seem like its not that certain of a release. What are your thoughts?

  5. I'm torn. I do want a movie, mostly because I felt so betrayed by the finale... but destroying 5 years of character growth from Sarah Walker doesn't exactly get me in the line for the DVDs.

Mostly I'm pissed off at myself for getting so emotional over a tv-show.

    1. Consider the finale a screw-up as opposed to an intended ambiguity and it gets easier to let go of the bitterness. Don't let that episode define the series for you.

  6. I want to thank you Magnus. You are the only person who has made me feel better about the finale. You never made feel stupid or dumb about my feelings or tried to change my feelings. I really appreciate it.

    1. I call it like I see it. Though, I am not as upset by it as some of you. But I can understand why you are and it is the fault of the writers. Just because some people like it, or decided to not have problems with some of the most obvious missteps, is their deal and I don't even care about trying to change their minds either.

We experience these things in our own way. But I don't think anyone should allow that finale to ruin the entire show for them. Give it time and then watch episodes that still make you happy.

  7. I'm finding it hard to even want a movie from the people who had 13 episodes, knowing full well it was the end, and still not wrapping up the show in any sort of manner. Why would I reward that with my money? Who's to say a movie wouldn't screw things up more?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Reward the series, not the finale.
Like DR said: "But I don't think anyone should allow that finale to ruin the entire show for them."

If you're complaining about the end, you obviously care enough about the show. Make that matter.

      Delete
    2. Sadly those are my feelings too. After such an unsatisfying ending for Chuck and Sarah why should I give them any more of my money in hopes of getting a movie? I would take Push Mix, Cliffhanger or even Ring Part 2 over the finale we got any day.

At the same time, I do desperately want a better, less ambiguous future for my favorite characters... so yeah, very mixed feelings here.

Now, IF they first fixed the problems (and by fixing I mean fully restoring Sarah's memories) in another way, perhaps by doing a comic book mini-series, then I'd be very happy to support the movie.

I don't know how much serious consideration TPTB have given to other mediums, but if Joss Whedon can continue the stories of Buffy and Angel in a comic book form then why couldn't Chuck and Sarah & the resto of the gang get the same treatment?

Don't get me wrong, I want to see Zac, Yvonne, Adam and all the rest back, but while waiting for that I think a comics mini-series could help the fans who are disappointed to regain some of that lost trust. And it would be a lot easier to actually to realize than a movie/webisode.

      Thoughts on Chuck comics?

      Delete
    3. This is juts my opinion, but if there ever was going to be a movie, I think that Fedak and Schwartz would make it perfectley clear that the Sarah we see is the Sarah we know and that she will have all her memories back.

From every interview I have seen, while adimtingly leaving it open ended, they always intended for Sarah to get her memories back in one way or another. (I am pretty sure that is what they wanted the fans to decide...when not if; Fedak himself said she will remember as time goes on)

Plus, the fans would not want it any other way. Even if you loved the finale, I assume you would expect to see our Sarah Walker with memories intact, and I am pretty sure Fedak and Scwartz would realize that.

Now kind of an off topic question, but does anybody know what was behind Stargate getting a couple straight to DVD movies after their show ended. Were the ratings that good, were the DVD sales that good. What warranted them getting movies that is different from Chuck

      Delete
  8. She eventually got her memories back. But I don't think that is what bothers some people. I think it is the general manner in which we got to that ending. It just feels... off.

By only having one episode between where she loses her memory, then accepts that what Chuck told her is true, and then accepts Chuck back into her life, the writers didn't give the characters time to earn that moment on the beach.

We needed at least one more episodes where we watch her process of figuring it out. We go from "I don't feel it" to "I feel it" and nothing is earned in between.

    That is their failure.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Excactly, which is why I think it was a mistake to let her say "I don't feel it" at the end of 5x12 just for the sake of a dramatic episode ending. After she saw her vlogs you could clearly see that Sarah felt something (maybe it wasn't written that way, but poor Yvonne probably couldn't hold it together and who can blame her for that)

As always, everything was just to rushed, they should have left out Business Trip or Baby...

      Delete
    2. Exactly. They did it for dramatic effect but it is essentially what deflates the ending. Not enough time for them to earn it. Simple. And part of that is also related to all that time they wasted on a pointless spy story.

      Delete
    3. I think it is the general manner in which we got to that ending. It just feels... off.

Very, very well said. No duh Sarah got her memories back but like you said, the ending was not earned. We barely saw her interacting with anyone but Chuck, the others acted like her losing her memories was of no significance to them, we went from cold hearted Sarah to laughing Sarah with no in between. The transition was not smooth.

I don't want a comic for the simple reason that the actors brought these characters to life in such a way that you could ignore the lame plotting. A comic would highlight the issues with storytelling and put the spotlight on the plot with no great actors to make it work.

      Delete
    4. I guess we can assume when she said "I don't feel it" she was just lying to herself and scared. But even so, they did it for dramatic effect and didn't pay it off. She may have felt it in the end, but the middle was not satisfying in any way.

      Delete
    5. They should have killed Quinn at the end of the second act and had the next 3 acts having all the characters trying to jog Sarah's memory by re-creating specific scenarios from her past . That would have been fun and heart warming way to end the series .

And I agree with comment about NO to a comic book . Nobody cares about the story of the show ( other than the character story ) . It's the actors that brought these characters to life and I think that's what everybody would want to see . Not read about it .

  9. I would have just left out Baby and started the Sarah getting the intersect storyline one episode sooner.

Chuck versus the Baby served no purpose whatsoever so they should have just not bothered with it.

    2. Well, to be fair, Baby was supposed to tell a little bit of Sarah's background story. That was fair game and I can't blame them for doing it. I just blame them for failing at it.
Business Trip however was just totally unnecessary.

      Delete
    3. To be fair, they pulled Baby out of their arses and it didn't tell any useful back story whatsoever.

      Delete
    4. Yes they did. In order to resolve the mother story line. And again, I can't blame them for trying it, but they failed miserably.

      Delete
    5. I blame them for trying. No one forced them to do it.

      Delete
    6. No one ever forced them to do anything, they probably just wanted to give us a Sarah centric episode because last years vs. Phase Three was quite popular.

vs. DeLorean never served any story purpose either, I still liked.

Was it necessary in regards to the story? No. But I would have enjoyed it if it wasn't that bad written.

  10. Business Trip served more of a purpose than Baby did.

In Business trip it set up Casey being in prison and Decker being killed off in Hack off.

  11. Anonymous,

Stargate SG-1 got good ratings by cable standards for a very long time.
It built up quite a good sized fanbase to the point that MGM thought they could make a profit on straight to DVD movies.

Also the straight to DVD movies were made when the show was still in production and all the sets were still there so it didn't cost anything to build new ones.

It's my understanding that the Stargate SG-1 DVD movies did very well.

    1. BSG's post series finale movie was also shot while the sets were still available.

As long as the sets are still up, there is a possibility. Once they are down, that possibility shrinks big time. That's why, despite the big talk that SGU was going to get a DVD movie or whatever else they said, I knew it wouldn't happen.

If they take down the sets, the show is a goner for good, 9 out of 10 times.

      Delete
    2. this is true . but if they continue with the show in any way , it will most likely pick up years later . They wouldn't need the old sets . Just a logical story that would have the cast come back together in some form .

I still think that an actual movie coming to theaters has a ZERO chance of happening . Webisodes or tv/dvd movie would be the more likely route if it were to happen .

For all the money WB will make this year on the Batman movie . I'd like to see them take like $ 4-6 M make a chuck movie available online through like iTunes for like $10 and see how well it does . If there is interest in it and people pay for it , whos to say that down the line that other studios wouldn't try that model with other properties ?

      Delete
    3. Regardless of the show not using the old sets you'd still have to build a new one which costs money.

Delorean served a purpose because we found out about Sarah's relationship with her father and that he is a con man.

Regarding Baby a lot of fans have wanted to know why Sarah was estranged from her mother and why her dad raised her.

Baby didn't answer those questions and instead we got Sarah having a handler right before the show started which violated canon and some pointless story about her saving an infant.

Cheryl Ladd was barely even in the episode.

They could have given more time for the finale by nixing the episode and starting the Nicholas Quinn arc sooner.

That's just the way it was.

"Regarding Baby a lot of fans have wanted to know why Sarah was estranged from her mother and why her dad raised her.

Baby didn't answer those questions [...]."

Not completely right. They did not tell us why Sarah choose her father over her mother. But we did get to see why Sarah was estranged with her mother, that was the purpose of the episode. And for the last time: YES, it was crap and badly written and violated canon and I didn't like it either. I am not defending this episode, but you just said it yourself: "Regarding Baby a lot of fans have wanted to know why Sarah was estranged from her mother and why her dad raised her." that is the reason they did it, that's why I think it could have been a good episode even without serving the main story line.

To sum up my thoughts: Making a Sarah background story: yes, I did want that, most of us did, BUT they fucked it up.

And killing Decker: they could've come up with other ideas for that, I don't think it was necessary to set up a whole episode in order to kill him in the next.

And honestly, there was lots of lame plotting this season.. yeah, I enjoyed quite a bit BUT it doesn't touch seasons 1-3.

Despite my disappointment with the ending we got, I'll still support the show with my $, but only because I enjoyed most of the season and for my love for the characters and actors. These characters were meant to be loved.

Finally,I REALLY hope the show gets syndicated well in a decent network/channel at a decent hour. More people need to know what they have been missing. 21. I think people are confused by the term " box set " .

    1) It could mean seasons 1-5 packaged together as in single seasons of the DVD's, because if that's the case some retailers do that by themselves and isn't really officially announced by the studio .

    2) If " box set " was meant to imply a special singular release like shaped as a computer that had like the whole series over 25 discs with art work and a small comic or something like that . Than I would say NO to that .

    $29 is pretty cheap . That's only like $.34 cents a day until May 8th .

    4. but in most series the romance between the characters has up and down between the seasons. chuck and sarah had those for 2 and a half seasons. and then nothing. not even a break up not even a jealous moment...we should have expected that they were going to do something like this. but this show was CHUCK. not friends, not gossip girl. pffff sorry if i am becoming annoying and spammer but thats how i feel and i need to say it.

      Delete
    5. 3.13 was slightly tweaked but not much, but not 4.13. Had they known 4.13 was the end, it would have been the wedding episode. In fact, prior to the 11 episode back end pickup, they had broken the season so that 4.10 (if memory serves me) was the proposal and 4.13 was the wedding.

As for season 5... while they had mapped out the majority of the season to hit these beats, and I am sure they planned on that specific setting as the ending of the show, there was more planned with the amnesia story line than was used. Why they didn't do it I don't know for sure but I did hear that they were told they might need to extend the season and that may be why, after 5.07, they stalled instead of going right into the Sarah Intersect story line.

      Delete
    6. How much better for the story do you think it would have been if they would have had Sarah download the intersect in the SHaw episode to defeat him and then had a few with her as it . Then fleshing out the amnesia SL further and leading to a better payoff in the finale ?

I would have been kind of annoyed by that really . But knowing what we know now , I would have TOTALLY preferred that option . Or at least 1 more episode devoted to Sarah as the intersect/amnesia story line . They paid off the Morgansect SL well who was a secondary character . But when they used the same SL to amplify the stakes with a MAIN character they couldn't do it .

      Delete
    7. I think the show would have benefited greatly from having it happen in 5.07 and kept Shaw as the villain until the end. It would have meant the writers and characters actually earned that ending, by taking us on a real journey, not just one that starts in episode 5.12 and kind of ends in 5.13.

But it didn't happen so... and there is no way to fix it.

      Delete
  33. so if they have done it earlier sarah would probably have regained her memories in the last episode?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't know what would have been different, since they didn't do that, but I think they always planned for it to end on the beach with Chuck telling her the story of their life and blahblahblah.

  34. u say that they didnt renew theshow so many times because of the fans.. i agree with you that they didnt do it for that reason. but then why they renewd so many times and gave the extra episodes?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They renewed it for season 2 because the show had huge buzz and the "save Chuck" campaign had gone viral. Plus, Subway had essentially called up the president of NBC and told him how impressed they were with how the show had integrated their product. So, that's how the show got season 3.

The extra 6 episodes for season 3 actually happened because of the delayed start. It gave NBC a chance to see that the shows they were trying out were bombing, so they went with a safe bet. And at this point, NBC was getting CHUCK for cheap, so it was a no brainer.

The season 4 pickup happened purely due to the fact that even though the show had tanked in ratings after the Olympics, it had done well prior to that. Plus, WB lowered the licensing fee again and gave up some rerun and streaming rights, which was profitable for NBC. The pickup of 11 happened around the time CHUCK was doing well (well enough for NBC that is) and remember that the licensing fee was pretty low, so it was still profitable (and NBC was doing pretty crappily with new shows yet again).

Season 5 was almost in the bag once that happened because WB was less than 13 episodes from syndication numbers. Though, they apparently played hardball on that final day of negotiations which is why it was almost cancelled (but most likely a negotiation strategy by NBC to force WB to give them what they wanted).

Did anyone during the negotiation mention the fans? Sure. But ask an executive what the CHUCK fan campaign during season 4 was... and he will look at you blankly and say "Subway?"

      Delete
    2. well then i hope subway is gonna make a campaign for a movie, cause as i can see people are not gonna buy the dvds... and i dont know why. for me tha fans of this show are loyal and they love it judging from myself.i live in europe and i couldnt see the show on tv (at least the latest seasons) so i became a pirate. but i want to buy the dvds of all the seasons. i dont understand why someone who lives in the USA is not willing to pay for the dvds. i know that about 6.000.000 people ADORE this show and i am sure they almost cant live without it, but they just dont buy the f..ing dvds... lame people.

      Delete
    3. Subway isn't going to campaign for a movie.

And I've been saying for years that the hardcore fans of this show are a few hundred strong. You see them online and they do all the work. They do all the tweeting and campaigning and attending charity events and donating money and buying the DVDs... but that's it.

The illusion of the strength of the CHUCK fandom... FIREFLY laughs in our general direction. And Greensplat, or whatever you all call him, was honest enough to call it out... as I have been for years.

Either put up, or shut up. And CHUCK fans do a lot of talking but not putting up.

      Delete
    4. speaking of numbers how many people have to buy the dvds in order to become profitable for wb and think about making a movie?

      Delete
    5. That's a very good question. I have only heard rumors about the numbers, or how far in the red WB is with CHUCK. I would say they need to sell about... give or take... 5 MILLION.

      Delete
    6. And by that I mean about 1 million per season.

      Delete
    7. like starting right now , or overall in general ? Because if it's 5 MILLION starting right now from this very moment , I have a better chance to be President of the U.S. and I'm from the U.K. lol

      Delete
  35. oh ok... so a chuck movie is impossible to happen. i was ok with the show ending in season 5. i would still miss it but i knew the end had to come at some point. and this time we were prepared, but this f..ing ending destroyed everything and made me prey for a movie or something. btw are you speaking for a theatre movie or a tv movie? cause a tv movie got to be cheaper,so it may need less sells...

    3. For some shows, yes. It really goes back to Star Trek. And then FIREFLY got their movie after being cancelled. But both had huge success after the shows were cancelled (and Trek got more interest from the studio once Star Wars became the biggest thing ever).

Not for people who want to view the show on their own time, without having to wait. Plus, syndication doesn't mean they will show all the seasons, or even all the episodes in a season. So... no. Syndication is not a DVD killer. Online viewing may be but only if all episodes are available.

  45. To me season 5 wasn't really a waste; several very interesting things (to me) happened:

-Chuck the nerd was back (he was TOO annoying and whiny in S4), he was more heroic (minus Curse..) and finally started training self-defense!

-Gertrude was a cool new character, and I liked her interactions with Casey and Sarah.

-I loved seeing Casey's conflict about having a real relationship with Gertrude or not. He's not getting younger and everybody needs some love. It was also nice seeing him bonding with Alex even more. Good continuity.

-Shaw was back badder than ever!

-Ellie was more integrated in Chuck's spy life. Awesome too by the end. No more secrets. One big happy family.

-The show was convincing in showing why Sarah wanted out of the spy life. Wasn't as convincing in Chuck's case, though. It was still sweet seeing them together.. forever? ;)

    DR,

So, if WB was only losing $$$ on Chuck, WHY did they want to make sure it got enough episodes for syndication? You think they still think the show can make some of that $$ back? It's really hard to see why they kept it alive.

    1. I don't think season 5 was a waste as a whole. I just think it was the worst season as a whole with a couple of great episodes.

And WB isn't losing money on CHUCK. They lost a hell of a lot of money. But they think they can make that money back over time plus more. They are playing the long ROI game.

      Delete
  46. You operate at a loss in the short term to hopefully make money in the long term . I have no idea what the actual numbers are but I'm pretty sure the money they COULD make from syndication dwarfs what ever it cost them to produce this season . If WB didn't think they could make money off of CHUCK in the long term , I'm pretty sure they would have just called it quits with the show at the end of S4 rather than biting the bullet and practically giving it away this year for free as Magnus has said time and time again . Hopefully they see an ROI over the next few years so that the Chuck story can continue with all these lovable characters in some kind of fashion :)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, they COULD make tons in syndication. But not in the next year or two. Most likely, in the next ten years. Maybe longer. Hence why buying merchandising will expedite the process.

They were probably getting half that cost subsidized by the licensing fee with NBC until the final season when NBC got it for virtually nothing but gave up replay rights.

    4. ok. forget about a movie in theatres. why dont they make a tv movie (like 2 episodes of the show) after 1-2 years. that wouldnt cost more than 5.of course that would happoen after they make some bucks but they wouldnt need as many as they would need for a theatre movie.

    5. How do you get $5 million? It would cost like $10 million. There is a whole overhead to starting up a production.

That won't happen. This wasn't a hit show. It makes more sense to do a movie in 5 years once the show goes into the black. Or even crappy webisodes for $100k with all greenscreen crap.

Mmmmhmmm... bingo. She didn't return to who she was. She became someone else. Because at the end, Sarah is someone who has been cheated. Her memories are gone but she knows she has lived a whole life. It's hollow. And I don't buy the happy ending. Though, it sure looks pretty. It just wasn't earned.

Same here. I liked dark Chuck most other times, but this finale was so weird. It didn't feel organic, no matter what the apologists say.. The only other finalle I didn't love was Cliffhanger, but that was still better than Goodbye.

I would also prefer a TV movie, could be good and I'd love to see real Sarah back, BUT I'm not holding my breath for more Chuck happening down the road. :( That's why I'm upset about this so depressing ending we got. They had their chance and they blew it.

    1. Some stopped liking the show. Some found a show they liked more and either felt they had to give up one show over another, or they just weren't that into CHUCK but watched until they stopped caring. That happens to me often. I watch a show for a while because nothing else is on. Then when something I like better comes along, I just stop watching the other.

And I think a lot of people probably felt, especially after Chuck and Sarah got together, that the show was over. Every few weeks, some friend tells me how they hate when they put the couple together because it ruins the show. I guess people really bought into that idea... whether it is true or not.

    2. I just listened to an IGN podcast where their two TV critics talked about the finale and one of the critics said his interest started waning in Season 4 and he pretty much explained that it was because of how Chuck and Sarah were portrayed after they got together. But, it didn't sound like he stopped watching completely. It was more like he didn't watch as often or as intently.

That's what happens when I become more of a casual viewer of a show. I start missing episodes. Oddly, I started missing episodes in the first half of Chuck's season 2 and had to go back to them later when I became addicted to the show.

I know some Chuck fans think the 'moonlighting' curse, or whatever is called, is not true, BUT I think it is, especially in shows like this. People just aren't interested in the after they get together. Sad but true. Also, the way Chuck and Sarah were portrayed as a couple in season 4 was very bland, IMO.
