Chuck You the Podcast, Episode 8: Chuck Versus the C**t!

Wendy, Amanda, and Magnus discuss the CHUCK series finale (episodes 5.12 and 5.13) plus the possibility of a movie and other stories within that universe, plus some other insightful discussions about the industry.

Also, I curse like a drunken sailor, call out other podcasters, use the evil C-word, and generally conduct myself like a total a**hole!

  1. I looked at the final episode differently than most people did.

I looked at the Chuck finale and compared it too other series finales of other shows.

I didn't expect the finale to be a good episode.

It's not surprising to me that the finale was open ended because that's what a lot of shows do. and they usually do something that make you go WTF.

I thought season 5 was good overall and i liked that they had three main villains instead of one.

To me Chuck ended at a good point because i'm not sure what new directions you can take the characters in.

John Casey was my favorite character and i'm not sure what new storyline you could give him that would be interesting.

I thought Chris Fedak was starting to run out of ideas.

You were talking about network versus Cable and i want to mention that NBC often buys shows that sound like they'd work real well on a cable channel but not on network.

like Chuck, Friday night lights and the playboy Club.

  2. Magnus,

I would please like to ask you a question if i may.

I was wondering if the people at Warner Brothers were pissed at the show for not doing better this season?

Despite the disappointing ratings this season is Warner brothers still going to make millions of dollars off of syndication and merchandise for the show like they were planning?

    Do you know?

Congratulations for the finale podcast and for being one of the few persons involved with the online media who always had the guts to come out and say his honest opinion on the show without kissing the writers and/or producers asses
Best of luck in your future activities and if you ever have the chance to comment the finale with Mr.Fedak and/or Mr.Schwartz please tell them a cliffhanger might be ok on some levels but not when its the faith of the main couple

  4. I liked some of your guys' finale ideas ie pregnant/don't freak out.

Wendy starting to cry and your response was hilarious.

It really needed more Amanda, her voice is like heavenly angels singing!

    1. I swear to all things holy, I didn't know Wendy was about to cry. I had started my fake blubbering before her voice cracked. It just seemed to line up perfectly. I kind of felt bad but then... it was funny and I think the audience would rather laugh than cry. Still, I could have gotten Wendy on record, crying.

As for Amanda's voice... I try to get her to talk more because people are always mentioning that. Plus, she is like one of the smartest people in the world!

  5. Well, Playboy Club would have done better and gotten more time on a cable channel.

It would have also been allowed to be more risque with it's content.

It couldn't be what people expected because it was on NBC.

  7. I'm wondering if the finale will have an effect on S5 dvd sales. I was waiting to buy the complete set and S5, but honestly while I didn't loathe the finale like some did, it still left me with enough bitterness (seriously don't mess with the main couple in the final ever episode) and I feel enough emotionally cheated (seriously don't show me Chuck drawing that picture and leave me with a maybe it happened feeling) that I won't buy it. I'll still catch Chuck episodes here and there, maybe pop in some fav eps in the future once my bitterness has died down, but the final took away some of my passion for the show. I just really felt like after everything they and we had been through, CS deserved a better final resolution. How Fedak decided to rob us of that & after go on to sugar coat the ending by saying it was happy, I will never ever understand.

I'm kinda hoping Yvonne and Zach also felt unsatisfied with the finale that in future they might rally for a TV movie or something (though now I really don't trust Fedak, he'll probably have CS divorced in the movie and they have to find their way back again only for Chuck to really die from the intersect this time just as they renewed their love).

For a show that always delivered the emotional beats for their characters, and a show you could always count on to end on a happy note...it was weird that the finale didn't have that. I know the kiss could be deemed a happy & hopeful note, but was Sarah just desperately trying to remember and feel something or did she kiss him because she knew deep down she loved this crazy nerd.

Thanks for the podcast & your honesty, they've been a pleasure to listen to.

    1. I may turn out to be wrong but I think the season 5 set will sell more than season 4. I believe this because so many CHUCK fans didn't catch season 5 due to when it was on and then discovering it wasn't going to be online. So, a lot of them won't see it until they buy the box.

  9. I just want to talk about the movie idea for a second .

As much as I would LOVE one I don't really see it happening , which is a shame .

Now having said that , hypothetically .... Do you really think it couldn't make money ? If you gave them $25 million to make one ( and they ad a solid script ) , I'm sure they could make it worth everybodys while . They would probably have to go in the route of " Undercover Blues " with Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner . That old be a perfect fit for the Chuck and Sarah characters . Only you don't promote the show that way . I wouldn't lie about it , but when doing tbe promotion for say like a September or October release in what ever year you do your entire marketing campaign around Yvonne , right in tbe middle FOOTBALL season . Yeah I know I'm dreaming , but think about it for a second . Domestically , I could see in the $20 million over 4-5 weeks . Internationally could be the same or maybe a little higher than the DVD of the movie $25 x 1 million or more world wide . Who's to say that's outta reach . You would need some name recognition in there as well like an A- list celebrity to be the bad guy ( how awesome would Will Ferrel be ? Lol )

Obviously I know there's more to making a movie to which I just said , but I don't think its a foregone conclusion of not happening either . Who knows what's to come for this little show with a rabid cult following . Just think how good this show/movie could look with a little money behind it .

What just happened ? I must of blacked out for a bit there in my Dreamatorium .

    :)

  10. A Chuck movie will not make money for one simple reason.

The fanbase for the show isn't big enough to make a profit.

Look at Firefly it made 38 million worldwide on a 40 million dollar budget because there just wasn't enough fans of the show.

And fans of the show are the people who will go and see it.

Unlike The Simpsons, The X-Files and Star Trex that has more fans.

Of course that doesn't entirely rule out the possibilty that some idiot studio executive might greenlight a movie in the future but i don't see it happening.

If Chuck had been a really popular show i could definately see it.

    2. What about a tv movie or something . If WB and NBC could come to terms on say basically a 2 ep into a tv movie that they could air as holiday programming some time . Would that be out of tbe question as well ?

      Delete
    3. Depends on the cost. But they won't do it any time soon. Like I said before, WB wants to make some of their money back before investing more of it in new episodes they will lose money making.

      Delete
    4. Ok I get it they want to try to recoup some $ from the DVD sales which they produce first . That makes sense . I just hope down the line that we get to spend a little more time with our favorite characters in a visual capacity .

So a TV show I love ending isn't that bad.

    5. Any time you get really close to something, and it is taken from you, it feels familiar. But it is how you process it that is different each time.

What you are feeling is good. It is good to miss the things you love. If you don't miss them, then you didn't love them.

This may sound weird, but bask in the glory of your pain for it is a validation of your passion. :)

Same here. It still hurts a little, BUT when I compare it to other bad things that have and ARE happening in my life right now, it's not as painful. However, I realize that I really care for this little show, maybe more than I thought/should, haha.

BTW, I hope the syndication deal isn't so bad (I assume there will be one..). This show is good and deserves to be seen by more people. Last night I read in a forum that the show could be used as filler and shown at 2 or 3 am in some channel. I HOPE this person is WRONG. :/

There are a couple of different kinds of syndication. One is the WB distributes it to broadcast stations either on a cash or barter basis. In that type, it would be very likely that the stations would use it that way--particularly if it is barter syndication. But, the convention where this type of syndication is sold was last week and Chuck was not one of the shows WB was selling.

The second type is to sell Chuck repeats to a cable network on a cash basis. When that happens, the chances the cable network that buys it will use it as "filler" in the middle of the night is unlikely. The only way it might happen is if they start showing it in a good timeslot and the ratings are so awful, they have to move it.

I think likely candidates for picking up Chuck repeats are Syfy, USA, G4, and TBS. I throw in TBS because it's in the Warner family and they have a comedy position, though they mostly deal with sitcoms. I don't see TNT picking it up because their position is "we know drama". Other candidates might be Spike(targeted to men) and FX.

USA might be a longshot, too because they have high ratings and Chuck just might not be "powerhouse" enough for them.

  13. Great podcast! just hope you will tell us more inside stuff from those past 5 seasons in your next podcast and the Mel thing ha! ha! ha!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've talked about the Mel thing before. It just comes down to her trying to steal other people's ideas and taking credit for things she had nothing to do with and then, when she was called on it and the stuff she tried to steal wrestled out of her attempted control, she went around the set of CHUCK telling bloggers and journalists fairytale stories about how those things were her ideas and stolen from her.

She essentially flipped it. But unfortunately for her, good people with better sense who dealt with her and then the people she tried to screw over, took note of her disposition and her habits and realized which side they were on.

I have emails (and maybe even a phone recording) with her partner in crime on that other podcast where he admits, accepts, and even decries her actions. Yet he worked with her for several more years because her site was popular and brought him hits.

And that's my basic problem with Mel, her site, and that goofy podcast with the star-effer host.

  14. Thank you, Wendy, Amanda, and Magnus for a great podcast. Thank you all for your contributions to the show.

I've kinda been off the "Chuck" grid since Friday night. The end hit me a lot harder than I ever expected and I wasn't really able to deal with the whole debate going on.

But, you were all a pleasurable listen.

Buying the Season 5 DVD is a no brainer for me. The extra eight minutes to 513, in particular, intrigues me. Does anyone know if they are going to be fully integrated into the episode and it will be eight minutes longer or are they just going to be "deleted scenes"? I would definitely prefer the former and I think that would be preferable, even in regards to selling more DVD's.

I really don't see a theatrical movie, TV movie, or "direct to the consumer" movie ever happening. I remember that Stargate SG-1 produced two "straight to DVD" movies that eventually aired on Syfy. But, they produced those right after they ended production of the series so that they could use existing sets. Financially, I don't know how they did. There was talk of doing more and doing some for the Stargate:Atlantis series, but the longer both shows were out of production, the less likely that would happen. Plus, MGM got into some finanical trouble itself. And Stargate:Universe failed.

That being said, I still support Chuck finanically in any way I can.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, those 8 minutes will be integrated back into the episode.

And you bring up a point I should have made on the podcast. The problem with making more episodes or a movie or anything like that is start-of-production costs. WB is not going to reinvest in CHUCK until they are in the black.

Fans need to get over their delusional fantasies and start working on getting people to SPEND MONEY if they want more of the show they love. That's what FIREFLY fans did. That's what has happened with ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. These things became.... wait for it... PROFITABLE.

CHUCK is probably a few dozen MILLIONS away from being profitable to WB.

      Delete
    2. Good to hear that the extra eight minutes will be fully integrated. Maybe it will be worth an additional review when it comes out.

Besides the Stargate example, WB also made some Babylon 5 movies back in that day that were also produced right after production of the regular series. Since the series moved from WB syndication to TNT (owned by the same company), they wanted some TV movies to herald the start of that. It's always done if it makes some financial sense.

I'm still waiting to find out where Chuck repeats are going to land. That's another thing besides spending money. Chuck repeats getting decent ratings would increase the chances of more Chuck being produced than just wilting away until it's a footnote. Of course, we've never been able to influence the ratings that much.

BTW-over the past few months, I've seen a lot of bitching at NBC for not showing Chuck S5 online. I don't think that was entirely NBC's decision.

      Delete
    3. I don't know who made the decision to not have the episodes available online. I know they were trying to negotiate that at some point but why it never happened, I have no clue.

And you are right. We won't influence ratings. We never have. And we are unlikely to influence the buying habits of enough people to matter. But those are real things that will work and I can at least support an attempt to do it. But signing petitions and tweeting and posting on Facebook? These are just things people are doing to become Internet famous. Nothing more.

      Delete
    4. Yeah, WB probably figured they'd flog a few more DVDs if it wasn't online.

      Delete
    5. My comment was made mainly because I saw an extensive set of tweets from different fans blasting NBC for the decision a few weeks ago. My philosophy is that if I don't know why a decision was made or who made it, I don't automatically assume one party is guilty and start attacking them.

Even if I have a suspicion or strong guess on the matter, that's not enough. The "why" of it is also important.

      Delete
  15. Magnus, I hate when people say things like this, but I'm going to do it anyway: You captured most of my own thoughts on 513 and verbalized them better than I would have. So thanks for that. And thanks for everything you and others have done in support of this show.

    Jim

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree entirely with Magnus and Wendy's point about starting the Sarah/Nicholas Quinn arc sooner.

I did like a lot of things about the finale but if there's one thing about it that bothered me was that it tried to cram too many things into that last episode and then they didn't give enough time for the characters at the end.

I thought they should have gone from Santa Suit straight into Kept Man and then Bo.

That would have allowed more time for these heartful goodbyes between the characters in the finale.

I did think that all the endings for the supporting characters were good even if they were rushed.

Hopefully the extra eight minutes on DVD will include more of that.

I wanted to see Casey say goodbye to Ellie and Awesome before he left.

Making Chuck versus the Baby was a gigantic waste of time that keeps coming back to bite this show in the ass.

I loved all the callbacks and references to earlier episodes in both Sarah and Goodbye.

Which made me realize even more how bad Chuck versus the Baby was.

Damn you Chuck versus the Baby.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think your comments on the podcast were spot on. I like that you brought up the issue, in connection with the end, of what type of show Chuck is, and particularly the type of show it's really sold itself as over the seasons. I think they definitely should have taken that into account more in writing the ending. This show was a fairytale with spies really, not Lost or BSG; so why not give everyone the magical kiss ending? You made a good point also about why take the fans on this huge journey just to only give them a few minutes of the ending they want, and even then don't give them the whole-nine-yards-happy-ending.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And I think Amanda made the best point about the show being about Chuck's growth as a person. It should have ended on his next progression, not on him being back at the place he was in season 4. That's regression. That's not a payoff.

      Delete
    2. Absolutely, another great point. And that's especially disappointing on a show like this where so much of the value over the seasons has come from the characters and their development. It's pretty much an accepted fact that the mythology, Intersect stuff was never it's strong suit. To not have that progression and payoff in the final episodes was a big let down.

      Delete
  18. Buying more DVD's and some more merchandise should be a no brainer really.

I have heard that Chuck is one of the biggest merchandise sellers so if true that's good.

But anyway I'm talking for the fans who say Chuck's their favorite show and that watched season 5 live.

These people are the one's who can afford to buy a couple of DVD sets but they don't.

This was talked about on the podcast where these Chuck fans will be heavily involved online with the show but they don't buy the DVD's.

If fans would buy more of the DVD's it would make WB some money and they could see that there's profit in Chuck.

We as fans can affect the DVD sales where as there's nothing that could be done about the ratings in syndication.

Just if every Chuck fan would buy one copy of each season of the show that would be a step in the right direction towards getting a future film.

Unfortunately the majority of Chuck fans talk a good game but they don't back it up and that's why it's unlikey to me that we will ever see a movie.

I am surprised that Zach Levi is even talking about doing a film or more online episodes because i would have thought he'd be tired of the character.

Yvonne has as well and that surprised me for the same reason as Zach Levi.

It's simple. They're like family and loved working with each other. And with the emotions you could clearly see during the last episodes they clearly did not got tired of their characters.

And perhaps they were not satisfied with the end either.

    2. It was one of the biggest merchandise sellers for NBC. Not necessarily for WB. Though, I think WB does very well in that department. It is one of the reasons why WB believes they can make their money back on the show. Provided that fans keep buying.

    4. i know. but apart from that the value of the show will fall.thats why i prefer a movie...

      Delete
  26. I never really cared about Chuck having a bigger budget.

It would have been nice if the show could have had production values of season 1 and 2 but having a bigger budget wouldn't substitute for the storytelling.

I think that they could do a very good ten part web series of Chuck provided that the come up with good stories to tell.

For me the show has always been about how good the stories are and is it well executed and well acted.

If the show never had interesting characters or wasn't funny then they wouldn't have gotten as far as they did.

My big fear though is Chris Fedak would still try to put on these big action sequences even in a really low budget web series.

    ReplyDelete
  27. "but having a bigger budget wouldn't substitute for the storytelling."

They were hampered by their ability to do certain things because of their budget and that definitely impacted how they told the story. Maybe not on a massive level, but definitely from the spy story perspective.

      Delete
  28. oh I'm sure the budget hampered them a little bit but that wasn't a big deal to me.

In Masquerade the budget effected the show in a couple of scenes.

Zach riding the horses looked very bad and Adam Baldwin sniping everyone.

Those two scenes would have looked better with a season 1 and 2 budget.

of course the green screen in First fight and Bullet Train.

But those things didn't bother me too much.

  29. I was disappointed with the ending and did think the writers could have handled the same story in many different ways. But I will still always love CHUCK. My girlfriend on the other hand, was almost inconsolable. She sobbed and said "If this was his idea of a love letter, then I'm glad I'm not Fedak's girlfriend."

The ending was a personal experience, if you loved it, you probably always will, if you hated it, I don't think time will heal your disappointment.

  30. why the writers always are happy when a show comes to an end? all the actors/actresses are down, but the writers are like robots. and they also like to play with the fans like fedak did with us... COME ON YOU F....EDAK. for 2 and a half seasons you made CS play seek and hide and then you put other obstacles on the way. and at the end. you dont really let them be happy. at least you are not showing us they are completelly happy.YOU ARE MEAN FEDAK.

There. Webisode done. ;) Closure and happy ending given.

  34. "magnus, are you going to rewatch the episodes with the same excitement now that we dont get on screen that sarah regains her memories?"

That's a good question. Magnus, any thoughts?

I personally tried to watch a S3 episode and found myself still feeling too sad for Sarah even though I tried to convince myself she got her memories back. That's what sucks about an open ending, even if everyone and their mum tells you she did, there's always that 0.001% doubt. Darn Fedak.

Maybe in time it won't be so bad. I do feel sorry for those who might never be able to re-watch without having that heavy heart. Didn't Fedak realise what he would do to some fans? How is that a love letter after all their loyalty? He ruined the DVD's for them, lol.

Still i would like to hear your thoughts Magnus.

Those fans are in denial, IMO. The ending was FAAAAAR from ideal, no matter what others say. And I'm not even a Chuck and Sarah shipper, but I felt cheated. I'll still buy the S5 DVDs though, I enjoyed a lot of the season and I liked these characters a lot.

    1. Also, consider that the critics and the site owners who have been praising the finale, and dismissing the complaints, might not want to stand out as the ones who complained, since that will not sit well with those show runners.

And you don't want to be remembered for that if you have to deal with them in the future. I'm not saying there aren't legitimate feelings of like/love for the finale, but that some people are going to ignore the obvious problems as a way to avoid getting frozen out by Schwartz or Fedak.

In this biz, that happens all the time.

    2. They're worried they won't get Gossip Girl interviews and scoop? How's that a bad thing?

I hope Josh and Fedak are aware of all fans views...both the negative as well as the positives. Sarah was a loved character and CS the main couple. Plus we also wanted to see Chuck more happy.

  38. "and that season 5 was a nightmare."

    It wasn't that bad.

At least Chuck/Sarah are together. No one died. Sarah as a character (and not just Chuck's love interest) just deserved a better lead up to that last scene.

I wonder if the critics would've liked the finale & those who had mo issues if Chuck's memories had been erased. I highly doubt it.

Fedak said it's a story about how a boy meet a girl and fell in love. Shouldn't it be how a boy AND girl meet and fell in love. I know the show is called Chuck, but it was such a joy to see Sarah's journey and growth as well. In fact she had more than Chuck.

At least Sarah said tell me OUR story, but really the finale rendered Sarah to the love interest mainly.

Chuck once said that one day he'll get the intersect out and live the life he wants with the girl he loves. Well he still has the intersect and some pessimistic fans think he lost the girl as well. LOL. He obviously didn't but the fact that some think he did, shows TPTB dropped the ball with the end.

Why introduce Sarah wanting to have a baby at the end to strip all of that. Seems to me they could have gone in two directions: either have the scooby-doo ending of her saying she is preggers and Chuck saying dont freak out as it cuts to black, or start the Sarah forgetting her memories arc 4 eps ago and spend the last ep having Chuck & Ellie (who they dont even have trying to fix her memories like she did with morgan) showing her stuff and rehashing her memories and having her remember at the end. Just my 2 cents

  49. I’m confused by Josh and Chris’s comments in interviews.

Was it ambiguous that the kiss worked in that moment...or was it left open ended whether or not Sarah EVER got her memory back? Because to me and from Chris in particulars comments it seemed it was left open to interpretation when (i.e. right after the kiss...or slowly over time) Sarah got her memories back not if. That who she was (her development), isn't gone forever.

HGF, your two cents? What the creators have been saying vs what I’m reading from comments are just confusing.

  50. "do u think that they used the last song, which said 'rivers and roads till i reach you'to show that it took a long of time for for sarah to find her memories back and be with chuck again? "

When a fan asked Josh why they didn't add the line "I remeber" he said that if you think she said it, it happened. So bascially whatever we think happened, did.

I just find that...such a cheap way to end IMO. Because everyone will have their own theories and nothing is really canon even though Josh said your end is the canon. So theere's like 1000 different canon's for the end out there, lol. But again, to me from their comments it seemed that one thing is certain...not if Sarah remembered but when.

    1. Oh yeah, no doubt. And as I said on the podcast, perhaps that is why it was written this way. Because they were told to leave it somewhat open ended. I could see them being super lazy at the end and just figuring... screw it, we're just leaving it this way.

  54. I think Josh is just leaving the when she gets her memory back up to the viewers, hence him saying it’s up to the viewers. He’s confusing the qs asked to just referring if the kiss was in fact magical at that exact moment.

  56. I thought the ending was beautiful . NOT what I wanted mind you , but very poignant and beautiful . I would have liked more of a motion from Sarah when Chucked kissed her . Maybe a hand to the face like he did . That would have sat a little better with me considering practically every time Sarah pre 5.12 kissed chuck she pretty much always had her hands near his face . I would of liked that , it would have given me of a hint that her memory was returning rather than her just sitting there and Chuck kissing her . But oh well nothing can be done about it now .

The way they left it ambiguous I can kinda relate to . It wasn't so much to me that her memories didn't come back , because I'm absolutely positively believe they were starting to . It's just what were they were going to do next . I get that we didn't get to SEE it and man , would I have liked to . BUt I like that it didn't have a definitive end . You know like they are in the house and have 2 kids and are just sitting around . I like that I can think of ways on how the story could continue .

I though " the love letter to the fans " was appropriate ) minus the last 15 seconds ) . All the call backs from the pilot brought a feeling of nostalgia throughout .

I've seen a few comments that suggested that people wouldn't want to watch the series again due to the way the final scene went down . I was kinda in that camp originally ( even though I liked the ending ) , but I was wrong . To me it just kind of makes it a little better knowing what we know now . I was watching some s1 eps recently and it was like " I could totally see them going through these situations again , only 2gether and not apart this time " . Also there are certain episodes now that I didn't like before that now I'm starting to , Business Trip was an episode before where I was like REALLY ? after it first aired but now knowing the end it makes it more tolerable . Which is kinda weird and funny at the same time . Bottom line watching eps again doesn't bother me at ALL . In fact I'm enjoying the show again in a way I thought not possible . Still brings a smile to my face ( ok Yvonne mostly ) . That will never change.

I hope everybody finds peace in time with the ending .

I hope in time when the finale emotions has settled, people will remember Chuck over all it's 5 years and not just the ending that polarised the fans (and went totally against what Chuck has always delivered...really happy endings.) For now all I can think is...why, why did you end it that way?

Soon, with time...I want to make peace with it and just be content that I need to imagine the happy end after the fade out kiss and start to remember the great stuff and enjoy my DVD's while hopong that someday if there is a movie, Fedak finally delivers on a more happy end and not a bittersweet one.

    2. "But there will always be people who hated it and want nothing to do with the show ever again."

Usually if this was any other show, I would say heh bad luck, the writers told the story they wanted to. However, Chuck has always been such a fan driven show that has always delivered in the past the more joyful ending that I will never understand why Fedak and Josh didn't just like you said throw a line or shoot the end in a way (or even fleshed out the arc more) that left EVERYONE more assured that Sarah's journey over five years wasn't for nothing or at least provided her character with more closure. I too get why they did it, but on some level they must have been aware some fans would feel cheated. It just seemslike they didn't care because no one would have criticised them had they shown more that she was starting to remember or at least show her connecting with the memories she did have. I know that was put in to show that eventually she would get it all back and feel the feelings (like she was on the beach) but sometimes it's ok to not do something in a subtle way.

      Delete
    3. You say you know why they did it, but we don't know why they thought it was necessary. There's really no need for it. It doesn't actually enhance the story. At least not in the way they did it. Sure, her losing her memories and then still falling for him would enhance the story... but that's not what happened. She just kissed him at the end after he told her a story.

We don't see her fall in love with him again. We are supposed to imagine she does. That's regressive story telling. This show was always about PROGRESS. What was the progress of the finale?

It was for everyone but Chuck and Sarah.

What a silly way to tell a story.

      Delete
    4. I guess they wanted us to think that by her asking him to kiss her that she was already starting to fall in love. I mean she wouldn't ask that if she didn't feel something or at the very least realise she could feel something.

Or maybe she just wanted to kiss him so he could shut up, lol. That's the problem with these ambigious scenes, there's 101 ways to interpret it. *sigh*

But yeah there's no spinning it, it was regressive storytelling. Just because we are left to imagine that it all worked out fine, doesn't make it less so.

I know they wanted to show that Chuck would be her rock the way she was his back in the pilot and they were trying to go for symmetry and the whole believe in the power of love, there's hope, everything will be ok blah blah blah...but that message would have still been there if Sarah had said "I remember" or showed more signs she did or was falling for Chuck at the end. They might have thought it would be less poignant if they added more to it, but I don't think that's true and honestly who cares. At the very least they could have pulled apart and Sarah could'be smiled and kissed him again. It was like you said in the podcast, what they wanted more ratings? More critical acclaim? Please. Who they kidding? Don't change the overall tone of your show in the final minutes and especially not with the main and most popular couple. Heck even Jeffster moved forward. How is that in any way fair to your leading male and female characters?

The more I think about it, the more pissed I become. I should do what you did Magnus and got watch Honeymooners on repeat and block that part of my brain that wonders if Sarah even remembers that.

      Delete
    5. Oh one more thing, Fedak said that it's two people in love on that beach. So we're meant to think while she's stitting there Sarah is in love. And yet it was more like what you described: "but that's not what happened. She just kissed him at the end after he told her a story."

So just goes to show that their intentions and what come across on screen were two different things. So they dropped the ball. The execution (not the acting) just the overall execution was off. If you intend one thing and the most can't see it, something is not working.

      Delete
    6. They have convinced me before that Sarah was falling for Chuck. Many times, in fact. One of those was not that final scene. And it has everything to do with how we arrived at that point and how it was edited and how they pulled out of the close-up (which they should have stayed with).

Just a lot of bad choices. Sure, the scene looks great. But it's not totally satisfying. I say the same about the episode as a whole. Parts great; all-around unsatisfying.

  58. Why do people get upset and try to change your mind if you don't like it? I've seen this over and over again, and honestly, this bothers me more than my disappointment over the finale. 60. "I hope everybody finds peace in time with the ending."

I won't because it was seriously stupid. I think that after ALL they have been through these 5 years, both Chuck and Sarah REALLY deserved their happy ending. This amnesia/Quinn arc was a misfire, or at least it should have happened earlier in the season to allow for a truly satisfying ending. It's so sad that freakin Jeffster! had the best ending. Like DR said, the finale had great moments but it's very flawed and has a bitter ending that makes no sense for this show.

Right now, I just need to ignore all the last 3 episodes. Actually, my Chuck experience ended with Santa Suit (minus the baby cliffhanger at the end).

  64. At least the ending to Chuck was more hopeful than say Quantum leap.

In Quantum leap they specifically made mention that Dr.Beckett never returned home.

That's what Quantum leap was about that hopefully Sam Beckett gets to go home.

That's what a lot of fans of that show wanted.

With Chuck at least him and Sarah are together and that it was implied that she'll get her memories back in time.

Cor is right if Chuck had gotten a back 9 Sarah would have recovered her memories in episode 14 because the show always did these 2-3 episode arcs.

One thing i thought that wasn't needed was Ellie and Devon getting job offers and going to Chicago.

It came out of nowhere and they just rushed to leave.

I didn't think it was necessary for them to leave Burbank right away just because the show was ending.

Why didn't Ellie and Devon stay in Burbank and help Sarah rather than write it that they get job offers out of state.

That's what they would have done if the show had gotten more episodes is stay in Burbank.

  65. I wont go into all too many details about this, but I also feel like many other ppl that the ending were cheap. No progression at all and to me it didn't even ended on a happy note.

But really I did not expect the ending to be one of the best episodes. Like s4 ep13 where the writers try too hard to fit all too much story in to the episode and the payoff in the end really does not work the way it was supposed to do. But it at least it ended with progression and on a happy note.

Also I feel that removing the classic intro to the episode was a bad decision. It just should be there in the last episode of the series.

The one thing I really hate with this ending is the goodbye between Casey and Sarah. For all the things they have been trough together and for their support for each other, all we get to see is a handshake and "Walker... colonel..." And this is actually the first time i use the word "hate" about what i think about anything related to Chuck.

  66. The saddest thing? Even though I'm not going to ignore that the last 3 eps exist, I also doubt I'll ever be able to watch them again. For one simple reason. All that pian and angst, only to have a 2 sec hopeful ending. I have no issues knowing Chuck/Sarah will be okay, but the payoff just wasn't satisfying enough. Not after 2 full eps bar 1 minute at the end of "kinda" lightness.

It's so hard knowing that for the biggest chunk of time in the second to laste ever and the actual last ever ep, we had to watch another Sarah. As her fan, I never got a chance to say goodbye to the Sarah I know the way we did the others.

This felt like an ending where we got a back nine order. That back nine would see Sarah falling in love again while getting her memories back and ending in that house with everyone over for dinner. That's the satisfying end and I could re-watch the last 3 eps knowing that the payoff for my tears would be there.

But there's no back nine, there might never ever be a movie (which honestly we shouldn't have to wait 5 + years for an ending that could have been satisfying with one simple I remember line) and Fedak had these 13 eps to tell the story I said above. But instead he cut us off midway and wasted other episodes on pointless filler instead of giving Sarah and Chuck/Sarah a more dserved arc. How sad.

    ReplyDelete
  67. You know what they should do and won't because Fedak probably thinks this is the perfect ending and those critics didn't help...have Yvonne dub an "I remember" and as they pan away from the kiss, you can hear her saying it.

Fedak trolling and being cruel? You all complain that CS don't have passionate kisses but "Disney" kiss, well here's your Disney kiss! Literally! Though if you take it "literally" and CS do have Disney kisses, than Morgan's theory was right and she remembered.

      Chuck: Through the Years (featurette)

Someone explain me what that's suppose to mean before I get my hopes up? Thanks

  69. well maybe its something. who knows...

  70. Here's something else I'v managed to convince myself of. At first I felt emotionally cheated with them showing the house, quit being spies, possible baby, family drawing and Chuck & Sarah reay to move forward ect only for them to throw a curveball in the end and have Chuck & Sarah back essentially at square one (if you don't believe in the magic kiss). Now I just think all that was to show that as Sarah said "someday" they'll still get all that.

Or am I just deluding myself so I can be ok with being put through the emotional ringer of seeing Chuck/Sarah have that only for it to be snatched away.

I know a coninuation of Chuck in some form is a far off thing, if it even does get a continuation, but I just don't feel like I said my goodbye to Sarah walker. It felt like an episode that has more coming for her, not the finale for her.

    1. Yes, some day... but why would that be satisfying? Why would that be good story telling? We were already there. We already had that point in the show. Returning to it accomplishes what?

Can you jump the shark in the final moments?

      Delete
    2. None of it is satisfying or good storytelling, but I need to rationalise it to be able to enjoy the whole show again.

"But I firmly believe with all my heart that one magical kiss from you could unlock all of Sarah’s memories, I do."

they kissed on screen, we saw that, so she's fine. Let me live in my bubble RB! LOL

      Delete
    3. "Can you jump the shark in the final moments?"

I guess that depends on how you personally see the end. I don't think they jumped the shark but they didn't really think this out well enough. I'm sure on paper it seemed cool, but after ahwile, once the dust settles, I'm hoping they'll realise just how unsatisfying it was. It's like they put in their mind they wanted the beach parallel and yet put no real thought on how to get there in a satisfactory way. Maybe knowing your show is for sure about to end or having a definite plan isn't always a good thing.

  71. "Magnus, said there's no addition to the end."

That's not what I said, but it also doesn't apply to this since it is a FEATURE not part of the episode.

As for no addition to the ending, I meant the beach scene. As far as I know, there is nothing changed there. But they could always surprise me.

    1. What has a better chance of happening ...

      1) some kind of Chuck web series/movie/tv movie down the line ?

      or

      2) Zac and Yvonne being co-leads in a romantic comedy or something like that ?

      Delete
    2. I'd say the chance is better that there is more CHUCK on some level. There are lots of projects out there and unlikely the two of them will end up working on one of them as romantic leads.

    1. Since they just suppress it, I guess everyone who ever gets the Intersect always has it in their head. But it's a good question. Like I said on the podcast, the whole Intersect deal became a McGuffin in those final episodes.

  75. I don't really want to start writing scenes for a movie but I think the story should revolve around Chuck and Sarah having been out of the world saving spy game for several years and pressed into action after someone they care is killed. So, someone has to die early in the movie. Beckman would be a good death.

I also think one of the main characters has to die at some point in the movie. Either Casey or Morgan would be good.

    1. I like it, like a lot. But you know, that Sarah is actualy not care about these people right? LOL., I mean She has no idea who are these peoples XD.

    2. Perfect.

But it's Fedak. He'll probably have Chuck/Sarah separated doing their own thing for a year only for Beckman to bring them back as a team for one last mission, and this time you actually see Sarah fall for him and in the end they have another wedding. On the beach.

And than a tidal wave strom hits killing Sarah. The End.

See how much Fedak has done to me after that ambigious ending? Killed my hope, not revived it! Hehe. j/k. But not really.

    3. "She has no idea who are these peoples XD."

She'll have her memory back by this stage. Obviously.

    4. I'd start it with Chuck in a perilous situation, like a previous bad guy ( don't care who ) having Chuck at near death and the guy gloating that he's all alone and his wife left him ( fake out ) , Sarah comes in takes him down says something clever . Cue short skirt long jacket ( obviously have to play with the scene and not make it as cheesy as I just did , but the structure the same ) .

They come back into their house/apartment early in the morning tired get into bed talk about that its the last time they help Beckman . Start of SEXYTIME ... they get interrupted by their 2 kids , Ellie comes in with a like " hey guys " ( her and Awesome and clara are visiting ) . Starting the show now like Undercover Blues . Have some funny scenes with Sarah at the school when some big kid is picking on theirs and what have you . Then Beckman gets killed/assassinated somehow " the bartowski file " gets stolen ( I know yawn ) but good way to re-introduce Casey when he comes to see Chuck and co after like 5-7 years ( show time ) . Then go from there ..

  76. Magnus, what do you think about the idea of a crowd funding for a Chuck Movie?
Fans and investors of a German TV show recently collected 1 milion € (~ $1.3 mil )in no time for a movie. And that's just one country.
Do you think something like that could work for Chuck?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nope. And anyone who claims to be collecting funds for a movie should be avoided like the plague.

A Hollywood movie won't get made for less than $30 million. Sure, production might cost less, but double that cost to get your final expenditures (promotion and distribution).

      Delete
    2. Not to mention that it is the dumbest idea ever.

If you can collect $30 million, give it to charity... selfish pricks.

    3. ^ LOL.

I think a web movie that you buy online or a direct to dvd movie is more plausible. I don't ever see Chuck going to the big screen. I don't even need it you. DVD movie or web movie is enough for me. IF it ever happens. IF.

Fair point, never thought of it that way. But for me the show was always about the characters so as long as I saw them again I wouldn't say a total no to the possibility. But DVD movie wouldn't be too bad.

    10. Even L&O is about the characters. The case of the week is just the setting.

      Delete
    11. Most people I know don't watch L&O for the characters, they do so for the case and just to have some show on that doesn't require them to invest in the characters personal lives. They see them doing a job, not going home and falling in love ect. Why are people upset with CS's edning? Because we invested in their personal journey, we didn't tune in to watch the spy mission of the week. Most who watch L&O want to see the "mission" not the characters. When a L&O character leaves, the show goes on, no one is up in arms. Imagine if the show had continued with Chuck or Sarah? They can't just be replaced with other actors in the role of spy and handler.

And that's another reason the end sucked. We watched for five years Chuck and Sarah's growth as a couple and individuals. We laughed and cried and cheered along with them. What's important is the journey not the destination, but by erasing Sarah's memories some think her journey and CS's journey was erased too....and now I'm straying off topic LOL.

Bottom line, you can watch L&O one week and not watch for another 2 years and tune in again, or watch eps out of order it doesn't matter because the characters are still mostly the same. It's not about their journey.

      I call BS.

      Delete
    14. I don't need to poll them, I know them.

Ok on some level people people do watch it for the characters because if they didn't, L&O fan fiction wouldn't exist hooking characters up and what not, but the show throws them bones with the characters lives, it's not the driving factor, whereas Chuck was built around the characters. And yet we still had to write our fan fiction end. Go figure.

  79. Magnus, I know you already addressed the question of a Chuck movie and the small chance that we have of getting one, but do you personally feel that there is a good chance that Chuck will ever come back in some type of video based format (movie, webisode, one time television special, etc.)?

  80. Do you ever get to interview cast/crew? On a site that won't be mentioned, she interviews cast/crew & I think her questions are purposely asked in a way that don't really get the person to answer any questions directly. Almost like she's defending him/her before they even answer. Not making much sense, but I think you'd do a much finer job because you're an honest person in your viewing of Chuck.
