As we all know Chuck and Sarah are going to have a fight...
What's the fight about? Is is spy related or is it a normal couple fight? :D

    Thankingyah! :D

  2. Hi Magnus,

I want to ask something different this time. Last night I watched a video on youtube with Zac's song and i wonder if it's going to happen on Chuck someday I mean Chuck would sing to Sarah or on a mission...

  3. Hi Magnus,

Do you think that the decision of NBC to order (or not)the back 6/9, may influence the course of events, in episodes 4x12/4x13? Or those episodes are already written and decided independently of the decision that NBC will take?

I wish a decision, by NBC, to be known as soon as possible...so we could have a solid history, as happened in season 2, instead of a story told too quickly, as the second part, of season 3.

    Greetings from Portugal!!!

  4. Hi Magnus,

Ausiello has reported that his insiders have told him that chuck is more than likely going to get a back 9 episodes, do your super secret fake insider ninjas tell you the same thing? If so a premature whoooooohoooooooooooo! I thought you said last season at the end that you were pretty positive chuck would only get 13, to be honest so did I, is'nt life grand when you and I are so wrong! I am now 0-4 I am competitive but I love that I keep losing and getting it wrong! Keep going chuck!

Does Chuck need the governor anymore since superman in jail. lol because I saw him putting on what looked to a governor in the first episode of this season but he doesn't wear one in the other episodes so far as I could see.

  6. Well Ausiello is reporting that a back nine pickup is imminent. Good stuff, thank you very Undercovers, Chase, Outlaw and L&O:LA for sucking so hard in the ratings and dropping like stones and putting our little show in around the average!! Just need several of the mid season batch of new shows to suck now!

    ReplyDelete
  7. With the news today of a very likely back 9 order , which would make 76 total eps . Does S5 stand a better chance ? Only 12 more to hit 88 . I smell a renewal ........ :P

Also , since WB owns Chuck. Have you heard anything lately about NBC/COMCAST purchasing the rights to the show ?

  8. Magnus,
All this talk about the back nine order has me thinking that NBC is just giving the writers a chance to wrap up the story and close the book on Chuck. I'd love to have 15 more seasons, but I'm just not confident. What are your thoughts on the possible or probable back nine pickup?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Wow, buzzkill much, a football manager (as in jogo bonito) once said after managing to lose a game in the dying seconds from a winning position minutes before, 'I could fall into a barrel of upper lady parts (he used a word beginning with t and ending in s) and come up sucking my thumb'.

It's probably a reasonable call but hey NBC's mid season lineup could bomb badly in the ratings like the fall one has.

    ReplyDelete
  10. First of all people, lets take it a step at a time, lets first get the official back 9 pickup from nbc! Then compare the ratings of those episodes against the new mid season shows, then ask if season 5 is possible! Magnus said in his previous blog that with the weather cooling down ratings could go either way, up or down, so we have to wait and see. My question is do you have any idea when we will see volkoff in the flesh?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hola Amigo - I'm just wondering if there is any particular reason why we very very seldom see Yvonne Strahovski and Zac Levi together off screen for interviews or show promotions?

    ReplyDelete
  12. What do you think has been the greatest disconnect between Chuck showrunners/writers - and the fans? Obviously they should not give the fans everything they want - but if you could have TPTB change one or two elements in the show right now - What would that be???

    ReplyDelete
  13. Will we see any different skilled flashes other than kung fu? Last season there was languages, dancing, medicine, playing guitar, but so far there has only been the basic kung fu.

Hey Magnus, I aways hear the podcast. Congrats, it's a great one. So, I'm very happy with the possibility of 9 more episodes of Chuck in this season. A full season .. wow! But, not trying to be pessimistic, but a full season could mean that NBC thinks about not renewing the series for a possible 5th season? Because, with a full season, they could finish the story .. what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Is it me or did NBC spoil way too much about Dalton's character in the latest synopsis for "First Fight"? Is there still a lot to learn and be surprised about from watching the episodes that NBC didn't tell us?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Twitter - Greg2081
Is morgan going to put himself in danger like he did this episode because it was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Not sure if I'm too late but here's my question...

Do you know how far along the stroy plotting for the first thirteen episodes is at this point? If Chuck were to get a back 9 would they be able to full integrate the 22 episodes or would the back 9 be a separate season, like we had with Season 3?

  18. I can hear the roars of disapproval, as crazy shippers grab that one line that you said. "Chuck and Sarah have to break up if there's a fifth season [heavily paraphrased]" Geez, then they'll try to get the show cancelled just so that they don't break up. It's freaking TV show, people!

    ReplyDelete
  19. John, let them try. They are all talk anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hi Magnus, I do not know how you keep patience with some of these fans. I mean at first fans said we got 13 episodes in season 3 as a favour to the fans to get a chuck and sarah resolution, then people said they extended the 13 to 19 to let fans enjoy chuck and sarah and then they said .......... The fact is 99/100 times tv networks do not give shows extra orders just so that they can be nice to the fans, they do it because it makes them MONEY! so fans as long as chuck is cheap, makes a profit and is beating the competition on NBC then NBC will keep it going! not because it has great fans, what are they santa claus!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think there was a couple of times that they missed an opportunity to make a couple of really funny jokes. Before Morgan jumped on the floor and electricuted himself he should have said please let sarah be the one to give me mouth to mouth resucitation. Secondly, when Morgan was trying to anger casey, I would have liked him to say "we lost vietnam! president reagan was a terrrible president! Communism is a fair way for a society to live" then he would as a final straw say I am dating Alex, it would have been hillarious!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Just a silly spec .....

I'm getting a feeling that Mama B's goal won't be revealed for while ( obviously :) ) , but I could see when push comes to shove near the end that Mama B will want to return to her old life ( X years away from Chuck and Ellie , being a grandmother ) . She'll strike a deal with Volkoff which will be to find the Intersect and deliver it to him in exchange for her " freedom " . Mama B will use Chuck to get close to all the orion info to find it . All the time not knowing that Chuck is the actual intersect . Then when she finds out about Chuck , what will she do ? dun dun dun ........

    Ryan

  23. Hi Magnus,

    Check this article out:

    http://www.ugo.com/tv/how-chuck-can-avoid-cancelation

Now it may not be accurate, it may not work .... but it sure is heck funny! Also I totally agree about the last point. I think sarah should do an entire episode in a bakini, great tv!

    ReplyDelete
  24. explain to me why they would have to break up if theres a 5th season?

    ReplyDelete
  25. You know if chuck kept the overall arc to one every season (season 2 fulcrum, 3 ring and 4 volkoff) then I agree with you magnus that chuck cannot stretch out past 13 episodes a season. But a great thing happened last season at the end and that is orions files, they could do an arc where chuck has to take down an enemy a week and then maybe they find out 10 enemies are linked to one big one and so on and so forth, there is a lot to be mined there with orions files. Also orions files can provide flashbacks and provide history to chuck. Also they have really not touched caseys and sarahs and even chucks past at all, they could delve really deep into those pasts and mine that too. So if they are willing to become more serialised or proceduralised then there is an opportunity to stretch out the episodes and also raise the stakes and make it more interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi Magnus,

You forgot to mention (for me at least) when casey said they promtly escaped from a stockade and chuck finishes of where they live as soldiers of fortune in the los angeles underground. I got so nostalgic when he mentioned that and did you notice only he got it! Sarah was totally clueless and I was just geeking out they played it perfectly! In a way chuck is the A-Team ! did you notice no one really ever died in that show, they would fire guns and car crashes but no one ever got shot or when the bad guys would always escape before the car exploded! Chuck does not kill anyone so well played !

    ReplyDelete
  27. ZLP, NO ONE EVER DIED on the A-Team. When I was a kid and realized that, I stopped watching. Mind you, it was the same time I realized wrestling was fake. ;)

Anonymous, I will explain it to you when you sign your questions so I can address you by name.

Ryan, sounds a bit too speculated.

Hawkeye, my patience is only truly tested by idiots. Asking a network question isn't really idiotic. Most people don't think about why a network would do something. Fans view their show as more important than it really is. NBC isn't sitting around trying to figure out how they can keep CHUCK around for 100 episodes. I am sure NBC and WB thought 13 episodes for season 4 was the end (which is why the show runners wrote the 13 a certain way). But if they get 9 more episodes, well, then the real question becomes "What will WB do to secure 24 more episodes to reach 100?"

CHUCK doesn't NEED 100 episodes to get syndication, but it will mean more money in any syndication deal.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi Magnus,

What did you think of the article linked, there are ways to improve the show, some were viable (e.g.make morgan darker) and others were not (e.g.sarah and casey hooking up) but I liked it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. ZLP, UGO is wrong on some levels and doesn't understand the show on another... like many fans.

I mean, this is the show that killed Chuck's best friend from college and his dad. It can get dark when it gets to the meat of the story. It takes a while to get there. We are closing in on darker stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Diane says...

This is one of those episodes that exceeded my expectations. I really liked it.

One thing I just realized is that I believe Chuck only flashed once in the entire episode. It was on the picture of Casey's old team.

Even though his plan initally failed and he ended up captured, Chuck was portrayed as confident, smart agent and the story didn't have to rely on Intersect 2.0 flashes to portray him that way. I liked that as a nice change of pace.

    ReplyDelete
  31. CHUCK has officially been picked up for a full season.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Does the fact that NBC actually ordered 11 additional episodes indicate this could be the final season? Or could it be more along the line of trying to reach syndication, if there were to be a 5th season?

    ReplyDelete
  33. explain to me why they would have to break up if theres a 5th season?

    slicknickshady

    ReplyDelete
  34. Fantastic news !! So with a back 11 making a total of 78 , do I even need to ask the question :) ? *cough* S5 look more likely *cough*

Could that mean WB and NBC are negotiating for syndication rights ? Either partnering or buying out ?

    Ryan

    ReplyDelete
  35. Al
Hey Magnus nice to hear, could the extra episodes ordered also be a way to give chuck a proper wrap -up if this is the last season? Not to be negative.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If anything, 24 episode order indicates that WB is looking for a 5th season of 22 episodes, so they can reach 100 (which is not necessary anymore for syndication but does mean more money when it comes to syndication).

I could see the CW picking CHUCK up for a 5th season if NBC passes. 22 more episodes could be the difference of hundreds of millions of dollars in syndication over the next decade.

    ReplyDelete
  37. "explain to me why they would have to break up if theres a 5th season?"

You really have a hard time with sarcasm.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I got to say it, and magnus you gruff softy you got to say it as well! you mentioned a couple of times with a smile the only reason they keep chuck around is becase nbc executives love chuck and sarah! Now I am actually start to think maybe we shoujdl take that serious, I think that the executives are thinking with their hearts and it makes this news all the more wonderful, zach and yvonne are a very adorable on screen couple with explosive chemistry even now and hopefully we will get 100 episodes! considering we could have ended at 35 episodes, we could get 65 more. So what changed the executives minds, was it colonel? other guys or honeymooners! I do not care but I am over the moon! Happy days, after lost finished I only watch chuck and panicked, but I am so happy!

    ReplyDelete
  39. OK, let us deal in reality now:

The only reasons executives renew or keep shows around are:

    1. The show makes money.
    2. The show brings the network prestige.
    3. The show is always in the media for some reason.

That is it. Nothing else. They don't renew shows because they like them. In season 2, CHUCK fit points 1-3. In seasons 3 and 4, it has fit points 1 and 3.

As long as CHUCK makes them money and they don't feel like something else could make them more money, it will stick around. Well, at least until after season 6 when the actors' contracts run up and they can leave.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am totally confused. Last April you stated that NBC would cancel Chuck. Then you started hearing rumors that Chuck would be picked up for a fourth season. Then you touted that 13 would be all we would get, then you started hearing about a back 6 pick up but guaranteed no more and now 11? what happened. I am sure glad I did not bet on your projections. What are you saying about season 5. I want to totally bet a lot of money against you. This does not apply to everything, your spoilers I would have to bet with you, your spot on with these.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Fred, when I said that CHUCK was most likely over at the end of season 3, it was because that is what I was told. When they changed their mind, I stated as much. I then stated what people at NBC and WB were thinking, which was that CHUCK would likely only get 13 episodes for season 4 (which is why the first 13 episodes of this season were written a certain way... they didn't expect to return). Then almost everything on NBCs schedule tanked and CHUCK remained very steady on the schedule.... and poof, back 11.

I never said that CHUCK was getting a back six. I believe you are talking about Paul80 who posted that on TVBTN and I posted his statements here. I said I heard back nine was still on the table. I never heard anything about a back 11... and it was as much of a surprise to anyone as it was to me (including Ausiello who broke the story, who the previous day said it was a back nine).

So, predicting what lawyers and negotiators are going to come up with is nearly impossible. So I, along with pretty much every other industry insider, can only tell you what sources say. The same goes for spoilers and anything else. We go with our sources.

And mind you, my source last year was the first to call the back six and was the first to call a season 4 renewal. This time around, the source said back nine and it was eleven. Obviously, my source is not in on the final negotiations. But then no one knew about that until it happened.

But at least I am willing to say what is happening when it is happening. Unlike another CHUCK site that only tells you everything is going to be fine. I guess people like to be lied to in the hopes things work out. When I know things are good, I tell you that. When they are not, I tell you that.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hi Magnus,

Has the money involved with syndication changed in the last 20 years. Shows like quantum leap and the A-Team finished there series in the 90 or so episode count and did not push for more episodes to get to a 100 and syndication. But now shows like Boston Legal and MAYBE Chuck are trying to cut deals to get to that point. Is syndication money a lot more then it used to be and therefore people like WB are willing to do a lot more to get to the magic 100? BTW this is just a question to broaden my understanding, nothing is a prediction, just curiosity.

    ReplyDelete
  43. You don't need 100 episodes to reach syndication. A show has to reach whatever number the buyer thinks it needs to reach. It is that simple. But there are certain numbers that, when reached, are worth more to the buyers.

78 episodes should be enough for CHUCK to be sold into syndication. However, there may be some deal between WB and NBC for a 5th season and 22 episodes that we won't know about for a while.

All I do know is that I won't be worrying about ratings or renewal for another SIX MONTHS. And that is kind of awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree, that the not having to worry about ratings for a while is fantastic. :D

And I just wanted to say thanks for the podcast. I enjoyed it a lot. The episode was really good as well. It was nice to have the focus more on Casey for once, although I rather enjoy Chuck and Sarah in the focus.

I would love to see Chuck/Casey and Sarah/Morgan team up once. I think we got most other possible combinations with these four for missions.

    ReplyDelete
  45. awelle, glad you enjoyed the podcast.

Different pairings? Yeah, you will see something like that... soon.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I was always hoped that morgan would be able to do things that chuck would not or sarah would not want him to do. I hoped that morgan would have a gun and shoot people, that would be great! Also he could have (if they did not force him and alex together) gone on seduction missions, and do crazy awesome things, but so far all morgan seems to do lately is break his thumbs or electricute himeself, it would be cool for him to be actually awesome in the spy world!

    ReplyDelete
  47. ZLP, you are minimizing some very brave things from Morgan.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh I know he is very brave, but at times the writers give morgan some great character growth and maturity and then pull it back a little. They also do that with chuck to be fair (they have him shoot shaw and kill him but then bring shaw back alive and therefore he still a spy who has not killed anyone) So if they are going to chicken out with chuck when it comes to the darkness, I would like them just to go all out and give morgan awesome training and some sort of fight techniques and as I said let him do the dark things that chuck will not, like shooting a killing bad guys. As Prez said in your anniversary podcast "Fear of the Beard!"

    ReplyDelete
  49. If you are writing 13 or 19 or 22 or 24 episodes, you can't give the audience everything they want to see in episode 4 or 6 or 12. You have to space it out. Which is why the term "one step forward, two steps back" exists for writing. You can't just do forward progress. It will result in a quickly satisfied audience that feels like it doesn't NEED to see what happens next.

    ReplyDelete
  50. To all you shippers out there! two things, first: sarah was wearing the bracelet in the episode at the beginning when she was reviewing the files and she was wearing a red shirt/blouse. What does it mean? is it just a prop that they remembered to use or is it an association of why she is helping chuck to find his mom, it is a personal mission and therefore it represents the love she has for chuck, oooooooooh. Second: the chemistry between morgasey or corgan is going strong, casey actually acknowledged that morgan and him "used" to be friends, is the big lug getting a little softer or did he just want to hurt morgans feelings! But when morgan manned up and risked his life for the others they were back on track, or are they when casey threatens to break morgans everything if he hurts alex, where does our new favourite couple go from here, oooooooooh, let the discussions begin!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Diane says...

To get to 100 episodes, maybe they can transfer Chuck over to the CW next season as a replacement for the departing Smallville on Fridays. Chuck would likely get similar ratings, if not better.

The only question would be if the dollars work out for all parties involved.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think if WB felt it necessary, they would put CHUCK on CW. However, WB would have to get the OK from CBS (I believe CBS owns 51% of CW).

    ReplyDelete
  53. ZLP, wrong bracelet....lol.

    -the 'bracelet' bracelet

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah... ZLP, you need to improve your bracelet recognition skills.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Diane says...

Agreed about CBS. Other than for monetary reasons, I don't know why CBS would object. They'd just be trading one WB series for another.

    ReplyDelete
  56. LOL Magnus,

I think the props department sold that bracelet.

If Sarah was wearing red that is the first time since Breakup. That is a long time. lol

    CR

    ReplyDelete
  57. I also think CBS is already paying for part of the CHUCK production... unless some recent deal changed that.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Great podcast.

What's this talk about Chuck moving to the CW for a fifth season? No thank you. Ypu'll have Sarah cheating on Chuck with Casey while secretly pining for Morgan.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I don't think it will matter if it is on CW or NBC. It will have the same show runners.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hi Magnus,

I just saw the latest video interviews of chuck, where linda hamilton and robert englund gave interviews and they both said the same thing that this is zachs show he is the leading man. Now I have heard that zach is called the mayor on the wb lot, he was there serving subway sandwiches in england when the campagne started and he is very eloquent and gets the most questions asked at comic con and wonder con but on set what do you know from your insiders that makes him a guy who everyone admires and wants to follow and even when guest stars like matt bomer leave still love! Is it that he smiles all the time and has incredible energy levels even when they work 15+ hours a day, that has a great personality, he is charming, any of these? I mean for both linda and robert to say that is a huge compliment in my book! Also something that I have always wondered, if yvonne had chemistry with all the males I would say fair enough she is nice and pretty and no suprise, but it is zach who every girl that comes through the show he has amazing chemistry with, that does also suprise me in a nice way, but what gives? There is not one of them that I can say gave a scene that seemed fake or not genuine.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I do not mean to be crass or please magnus delete this comment if you feel I am out of line, but how come the kisses now on chuck are devoid of passion and tongue. I mean in the first two seasons I am sure that evey kiss between all characters (apart from chuck and casey) were passionate and had tongue and hotness and sexyness, is it now being edited out? I mean ever since chuck and sarah got together they have never given a colonel or salami type kiss, what is up?

    ReplyDelete
  62. YS, it is difficult for me to answer this question accurately without talking about things that I feel should not be discussed. So, all I can say is that Zac has earned the love and respect of the crew in ways other lead actors might not. Outside of what I can't talk about, he is a naturally charming guy who tries to do right by people. That is not to say there aren't people out there who don't like him... but those are probably people who have an agenda that goes against what he is trying to do.

Sarah, I have answered this question both on this blog (more than once) and on the podcast (probably more than once)... but here it goes. The show runners seem to want it this way. Why? All I know is that the scripts are calling for sweet as opposed to hot. And based on what I have been told up to this point, it isn't getting any hotter anytime soon.

    Season 4: sexy but sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  63. FYI, I may disappear for a couple of days (though, I doubt it). So, if you post something and it doesn't show up, it will... eventually this coming weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I understand, I did see an interview where he said that he likes when people come to him for help and adivce because he likes to be there for them. I can imagine a man with his sunny disposition and I assume incredible levels of patience and good will would be a man that people love and respect. Thanks Magnus.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Magnus, I'm wondering if the "sweet" instead of "hot" is because they don't want the show to be like Undercovers and want to make a distinct difference. Undercovers is all about "sexpionage" and lots of it and isn't much of a "family" show.

    Jon

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jon, have you actually watched UNDERCOVERS? It just looks like a more expensive CHUCK.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Well in the really real world when two people get together at first the passion is really hot and you saw that in the first two seasons, when they went to kiss they went at each other really hard (like attacking each other) but once they were in a relationship and having sex left and right then they became a lot calmer. Now that they both are in love and are comfortable with that love you will see a lot more cuddling and spooning and kisses on the cheek and just being close but not like teenagers, that is not to say make up sex is not on the way! but yeah I understand why they have taken this route, it is like the will they wont they, if chuck and sarah kept on attacking each other some fans may like that but for the romantic it would not show much growth on their part, and we all want character growth!

    ReplyDelete
  68. ZLP, thanks for restating the exact argument I made when this question was first brought up.

However, I was in a relationship once... for around 5-years... and we made out like hot little sexy bunnies every time we were together, until we broke up. So, while I realize some of you are dead inside and can't feel the heat for more than 3-months into a relationship, some of us have no problem with that. :)

And with that... I am OUT!

    ReplyDelete
  69. You know in a way I am kind of glad that ratings have been poor for chuck for the last 4 seasons, bare with me I know sacralige but the fact is if and it is a big if, if we get to 100 episodes exactly that means we have got 52 episodes of them together. The one thing I know is that if CF/JS knew in the beginning that they would get 100 episodes they would have put chuck and sarah together in episode 90 or 95 and the engagement and wedding and moving in and I love you would follow then in episodes 90 onwards. so it is kinda awesome that we get potentially half the show with them together, so that is in a way awesome! So go chuck fans!

    ReplyDelete
  70. ZLP, do you exist to just say the exact same things I have been saying for 2-years? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  71. sorry man I am new to your blog, my first entries were your penultimate DR blog, so I have not tracked what you have said before on your blog. A question, did you recieve next episodes screaner? if so can you give us some scoop outside of what jace lacob or your nemisis gave? Because their previews were pretty lame and generic and rubbish!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I don't receive "official" screeners (at least not since the first five episodes of season 3)... so, if I do receive screeners, I cannot ever admit I received them. So, my response will always be no, whether it is no or not.

    ReplyDelete
  73. What things can't be discussed about Zac? That he's a Christian?

    Love you Magnus!

    Jamie

    ReplyDelete
  74. Jamie, why would that be something I couldn't talk about? Zac openly talks about that.

Anyway, if I can't talk about it, I obviously CAN'T TALK ABOUT IT. So, why even ask?

    ReplyDelete
  75. I know you've stated that the " split " is not over mama B , but is Chuck and Sarah's first fight related to something about her ?

    Twoosh :)

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think the split may have to do with chuck's spy abilities. If you noticed in the last episode that General Beckman was impressed with chucks growth and so she may assign him some tougher missions or bring in a mentor to push him to the next level. I know it seems a push but in a way it does make sense, it serves the "we want chuck to be a superhero" storyline.

  77. Magnus I heard to say in your first podcast this season that Chuck would not get any more episodes you said 13 would be it. are you willing to admit you were wrong

  78. I also said that it could get a pickup if the NBC lineup bombed. So, while admitting I was wrong, do I also admit I was right?

In the same way that blind faith deserves no praise for guessing right, predicting incorrectly minus the worst case scenario shouldn't be counted as the only basis for critique. I said many things about the future of the show.

  79. Well Magnus then it's a good thing that Chuck is on NBC they promoted their new shows ignoring Chuck and they still bombed

  80. That's what I have been saying for two seasons. Be glad CHUCK is on the crappiest network! It could make it to 100 episodes purely because everything else on the network tanks.
