Split Up Chuck and Sarah

The show-runners recently said that they have learned their lesson and will not be putting third parties between Chuck and Sarah... and a collective sigh was heard throughout a tiny, tiny, barely noticeable portion of the CHUCK universe.  While I do think they had effective third parties between them, like Lou, Jill, Bryce, Cole, and Hannah, it was Shaw that put a bad taste in the mouths of the fans, like when you expect to bite into a tasty chocolate muffin but instead bite into a pooh sandwich.

BREAK THEM UP! KEEP THEM TOGETHER!

So, no third party love interests coming between our main characters.  That leaves only a couple of narrative devices to use to keep things interesting.  One would be to throw in problems every few episodes that keeps the lovers from becoming boring, while giving us new and hotter makeup moments between them.  Or... to break them up for a while, either due to their inability to perform their job while together or due to personal issues within the relationship.  Now, you COULD keep them together and leave them happy to explore their love but this is a TV show and that is not going to happen.

Seriously.

It is not going to happen.

Stop even dreaming about it.

I know, I know... you are writing your hate comment to me right now! "MAGNUS! WHY DO YOU BE SO NEGOTEEV ABOOT THE SHOW, EH?!"  Well, eff you and your French Canadian accent.

You don't like what you are hearing?  Then tell me what you would like to see happen.  Here are some potential scenarios for them:

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
a. Chuck and Sarah are happy and the world is perfect and the birds are singing and we get a MUSICAL EPISODE! YAY!!!!

b. Chuck and Sarah are happy and the world is perfect and the birds are singing and BLAM! Sarah dies.

c. Chuck and Sarah are happy and the world is perfect and then Sarah falls forward into a ditch and busts her face and is no longer pretty and we learn that Chuck is pretty damn shallow for a nice guy.  Hey, why not?  Remember his breakup with Hannah?  What a jerk!  IN FRONT OF HER PARENTS?!  REALLY?!

d. Chuck and Sarah are happy.  Period.  NBC cancels the show during the first commercial break of episode 1 due to general forgetfulness.

e. Chuck and Sarah burn to the ground (you are welcome Jessica).

f. Chuck and Sarah learn that though they are in love, they have problems just like any couple.  Sometimes these problems cause them to argue and get mad and sometimes Chuck has to sleep on the couch.  But they somehow always figure it out because love conquers all.

g. While reading option "f" you vom'd a little bit in your mouth.

h. While reading option "f" you felt weak in the knees and peed into your diaper like a good little girl! Yeah!

  3. I want my third party baddies back :| Relationships, in my opinion, aren't everything a show should be based on unless you want it to turn into a soap opera. I watch the show for the comedy, the action scenes, and the nerdage. I think what Chuck and Sarah have is kind of cute but...Dx It needs to be spiced up every now and again.

  4. No worries, rdlenix, if that even is your name... I got that blog coming up in the next few days.

  5. I know option "a" is not going to happen but would it be so wrong? Buffy did it. But I will choose "f" because I am a silly girl who likes silly things. Now to pee in my diaper.

    Diapergirl.

  6. i. When Mama B finally reveals herself, Chuck and Sarah both utter a single word in perfect unison: "Mom...?"

  7. a. Magnus-check your Meds. You are all over the place this week.
    b. I like a. and f. didn't do g. or h. I'm a military combat pilot, never been accused of peeing like a girl.

But, given it is a TV show, I'll suggest:
    i. Chuck gets eaten up by petty insecurities and loses girl.
    j. "I'm not into Nice Guys... they just want to talk about their feelings." comes back to haunt couple and Sarah runs off with Rock and Roll bad boy (because Chuck won't come out of Orion's Lair).

  9. Jason, because you typed a book I will allow your response... but, in the future, skip the curse words. I do love to use colorful language but I like to keep things kid friendly to a point around here. After all, there are some youngins who read this site. :)

And I agree with you about the back six. And thank you for the other things you said.

  10. Sorry Magnus, I totally forgot about that, I was just typing things I would say in a conversation, so young people reading my words never crossed my mind.

It will not happen again, if you like, I can edit it, and repost without the dirty words, and you can delete my other one.

  11. Jason, if you can... repost it with the cussin' taken out and I will delete the cuss-filled one. :) Thanks.

Harrison, unfortunately, due to the work schedule, they may not have much time until right around September 20th. However, they should be getting both of them to do it together. As for being unwilling... I don't think it is a choice if it is written into their contracts.

  12. Wow Magnus you're really trying to stir the hornets nest that is the Chuck fandom, aren't you?

    I like it:)

Honestly this should not be complicated, the answer is f with a many many addendum's.

I think writers are lazy, so you have this preconceived notion, oh no, we can't put a couple together in a television show, what will happen to our beloved chemistry if we put two people together, and let them be in a relationship.

It's all phony with writers and tv people in general, for making this stuff up as they go along, to cover for their inadequate ability to make a couple as interesting as two single people.

On this show more than most, it is so easy
to come up with great stories where they don't have to be a normal couple who's lives change when they finally get together. Even if they were a normal couple, again it's lazy to think the show has to lose some spark it had when they were will they or won't they.

Some of the best writing on television involves a couple who are happily married, and yet guess what, they still have real conversations, and spark together, and it's not boring, it's the most realistic relationship on television

The show is called Friday Night Lights, I am sure a lot of Chuck fans are also fans of the Taylor's, the writers there do not have them create some stupid ass fake relationship drama that you see on almost all other shows, no they actually wrote stories that were funny, angry and yes heartwarming at times.

    Now back to Chuck,

Hello, they are spies, are you telling me you can't come up with brilliant story-lines for both actors to play even though they are in a relationship together, really, you can't?Come on now, you know you can, go ahead and try, just a little, you can do it.

After last season in which the writers mangled Sarah's character for most of the first 13 episodes they recovered very nicely in the final 6, this was not because they put Chuck and Sarah together, and if people say that is the reason, they are either not aware of they just want a happy ending, which I guess is an okay reason.

The reason why the last 6 episodes were so much better was because the characters were acting the way in which they had been written the previous 2 and a half years, so whether they put them together or not, the shows plot came to the point that them as a couple fit the arc of both characters that they had developed, and that led them to that decision.

That is how you should write, if the plot had been devised to where they did not belong together in the story, that is how it should have been written. It's not that complicated, be true to who you the writers created in these characters and take them where the story dictates.

I am aware I am all over the place on this reply, I just started to write and let my thoughts take me wherever they did, so be it.

Magnus, I have not yet had a chance to read all of your thoughts in that other post you did this week, I shall look at it once I hit reply, but I just want to say bravo for getting people to write about the show, even if you're making a ruckus, at least emotions are being used, and maybe with discussions like these people will get more motivated to indoctrinate new people into the show.

If not at least a year from now when the show might not be around, there will be these discussions to see that you and others tried to get something going.

    Jason

  17. Hi Magnus,

When they put chuck and sarah together and I knew a season 4 was happening I did actually think will they or can they put possible love interest in the way of chuck and sarah. I first looked into possible actors who could do that and make it seem plausable, I watched all of Zach and Yvonnes movies and I realised that what Chuck and sarah has is really special, I went further and looked at other movies coming out and saw what chemistry they had and to be honest I did not find much if anything. I think the problem is and you mentioned it in your mo ryan podcast way back when is that Zac and Yvonne have way too much chemistry that if you put anyone between them it just does not work, I like you magnus would loved to have seen shaw and sarah work, but I never saw it and to an extent I never saw it with Bryce or Cole. I think the problem is not so much finding someone for Zac it is finding someone for Yvonne. I now realise probably 80% of the people who bought subway sandwiches after season 2 did not for the chance to see chuck and sarah get together and I know that is kinda sad in a way from a story telling point of view but what Zac and Yvonne have given us is really rare and not seen much on Tv or Movies these days and I am afraid I have to pick your option F Magnus.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi Magnus,

I saw some interviews from the TCA party and it seemed that Zac and Yvonne are both relieved that the chuck and sarah relationship was resolved and they can move onto doing different things, if that is their mindset do you think that it will become hard for them to try and sell it that they want to try and be with other people? Also did'nt Fedak say that once they put them together there was no turning back? I do not know after what happened after Mask that they want to risk that fan wrath again and total abandoment of the show by loyal fans.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi Magnus,

They have only been together 6 out of the 54 episodes so far, what is with the rush to break them up so quickly eh? seriously though if they can give us a honeymooners every few eps I am sure that will satiate the fan base while keeping the show interesting for the hard core fans/

    ReplyDelete
  20. Warren, you can pretty much bet on the fact that Chuck and Sarah are not going to be with other people anytime soon. The writers seem pretty set on not doing any of that. But that doesn't mean they won't split them up so they can put them together again.

John, the problem for this show from the start was that the chemistry between Zac and Yvonne was just too intense. Granted, it created much of the hardcore love but I think it also hurt the show's ability to lead its viewers on. BONES has kept its loyal fan base and continued to mess with them with the romance. And while those actors have great chemistry, it is just different from Zac and Yvonne. Yet the BONES actors have done a lot of promoting of the show together so, there is that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Mike, I would love to see a Honeymooners episode ever other week, if only to bring Yvonne back into the comedy! Romance wise, you can suck the life out of a love story by simply repeating the same trick. People respond more to negatives than positives. So, for the writers to give us some passion between Chuck and Sarah again, they first have to make the audience (and the characters) feel like they could split up. Then, when they don't, the audience and characters all want to run into each others arms and snog!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hi Magnus,

You know I was thinking about the passion part of their relationship has certainly been put on hold in season 3 and I like you thought that was ok because 2 people in love are not always going to have those passionate kisses all the time, most of the time they are going to be tender and sweet like the ones in season 3. So I do not know what they will do to have those salami or colonel type scenes but I agree with you they would be a certain welcome return, lol. I must admit that colonel scene was intense, they way she (I think) wrapped her leg around him and put her hand on the back of his head and was basically using her whole body to keep him close is something rare I doubt they will do again, because man that was insane for an 8 pm show, lol. (BTW great acting from Zac and Yvonne)

    ReplyDelete
  23. They CAN do that again... but first they have to split them up. Even if it is just for an episode, or half an episode. Because makeup sex is usually pretty hot.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi Magnus,

From your podcasts I have a feeling that Honeymooners is like one of your favourite episodes of the series, at the end of the episode when the music is playing sarah says something to chuck and he smiles, did you ever figure out what she said my guess is "at last", "This is nice" or "I like this", just curious, it was a sweet moment.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Gina, Honeymooners is my favorite episode of the series. I think it is Chuck and Sarah at their best. It may not be the best episode story wise, but it is the most fun.

And she says "I like this." She is obviously referencing the song but both bits of dialogue, for Chuck and Sarah, could be interpreted as having two meanings: the music and their relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi Magnus,

I am totally on board for the make up sex bit, one of the few things I actually liked about Role Models is when chuck says to morgan "morning buddy" and has this huge smile on his face, for a moment I actually believed that he was having sex all night, great moment for Zac I must admit, he was so playful and happy. Like you I do like when Chuck and Sarah are happy.

    ReplyDelete
  27. No I mean she whispers something after he kisses her when they are lieing on the bed, she says something and then they begin kissing again and it is an arial view, I also like that he said I found the one, double meaning for song and girl, sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Gina, I have watched, studied, and even edited the scene. She says nothing to him. She nuzzles his neck. She doesn't whisper anything that I can SEE or HEAR. I even tried isolating certain sounds. I don't really know what you are hearing or seeing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. when they are lieing next to each other they cuddle then kiss then they move slightly apart and she says I think "at last" and you see him smile. man where is a lip reader when you need one. No worries not important I just thought if that is what she said it was cute.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Gina, I see what you mean. To me it looks like she is saying "Hi" but if I want to see "At last" then I can. So, if she says anything, then they cut the dialogue. Ask Matt Barber. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Maybe it is just an inside joke between the actors, like yvonne being the shipper said as a joke finally at last we got there, lol. Zac certainly found it funny. It probably was not meant for our ears.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi Magnus,

I see what you mean about Bones guys doing promoting together, I do not know with Zach doing the movies and animation and Yvonne doing Kille Elite and I love you too whether they would have the time to do the promoting together in time for the premier.

  33. h. Chuck and Sarah play Mr & Mrs Smith.

  34. Hmmmm, as I'm a girl I feel safe choosing option f. Can't a girl dream and hope that these two stay together and atleast TRY to be a "normal" couple.

Wait, scratch that. They will never be a normal couple and I like that, so I am prepared for anything they throw at us ... I just hope ultimately they are together when the show *gulp* ends.

  35. Hola Mr. Hypothetical...
you've stirred the hornets nest a couple times lately - but you haven't actually told us what you want to see... what's up with that?
    1. Ok we understand that eventually the series will end - and you want to see them finish in grand style on their own terms - but what would be the most satisfying ending for you?...

    2. because new close relationships are never static... There are always needs and expectations and outside forces or obligations, or family issues - that get in the way.
[ They say that everyone comes into a relationship is some kind of baggage...]
So... I'd love to hear you lay out your 'final fantasy' for us. Maybe not with dialogue details - but the " Chuck Plot for Dummies" version would be most entertaining:

  36. I can see them breaking Chuck and Sarah up, they could have a lot of fun with it. Make Casey and Sarah in charge of the ring operations, with the Buy-More as the Base. Have the CIA meetings where Sarah gathers the information, and with all spy's thinking Never Fall in Love, all the male spies are attracted to Sarah and keep hitting on her right in front of Chuck, and have the female spies attracted to Chuck who actually has to Nerd Herd. Start with having Morgan as Alfred to Chuck and Sarah only he only does Sarah's Laundry, but not the dry cleaning, making her uncomfortable around him. Then Have Greta 1, Attacking Chuck, Greta 2 after a fight lands on Sarah and proclaiming "Look I am on a Walker", Chuck is attracted to Gretta 3's cookies. Sarah's traveling having to seduce information out of men while Chuck watches from the van. The female spies are handsey with Chuck while Sarah is watching the video feed. But they have to make the break-up slow and painful over several episodes having the finale where they break-up and are not put together, but there is a chance for them to get back together. Moo Ha Ha.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anonymous, if that even is your name, let me see:

    1. The most satisfying end of the series for me would be Chuck and Sarah, married for three seasons already, with Sarah newly preggers, at Morgan and Alex's wedding, with Casey shedding a tear and Mama B watching from a secret room in the church, shedding her own tears as the camera rests on Chuck and Sarah holdings hands and Sarah rubbing her growing belly bump.... and fade to Star Wars end-theme music. :)

    2. Chuck finds Mama B and she is the most dangerous Ring agent ever. He tries to turn her to the good side but she resists, telling him that the side he is on is no better. Sarah suddenly confronts them and Mama B shoots and wounds her. Chuck puts himself between Mama B and Sarah before his mom can kill the girl he loves. Mama B tells him that the next time she sees him, that she won't show mercy. The season ends with Sarah in the hospital and Chuck by her side, and Morgan, Casey, Alex, and Awesome agreeing to find and stop Mama B before she comes for them (seemingly without telling Chuck and Sarah).

The next season Awesome is secretly training with Casey... and the rest I need more payment to tell. ;)

  39. Hi Magnus,

Do you think that because some of the writers are shippers like Ali Adler, Rafe Judkins and Lauren Lefranc that when they write episodes they write it with the mindset that they want to have those special moments between chuck and sarah and so it can feel like the season is up and down. A perfect example is break up where they agree to break up and then cougars comes along and the romance is back in, another is best friend the romance is ramped up and then beef cake happens and then it is back down and then lethal weapon it is back up. Do you think maybe the writers do write the story they have to write but some concentrate on a relationship that they love and that is what has made it difficult for our characters to have relationships that seem believable apart from the ones with each other. BTW I love Ali Adler, Judkins and Lefranc

  45. I think that for every 3 episode chuck and sarah have a problem so it doesn't become stall. also the whole idea of sarah being kidnapped by mansooh could be another thing that could keep things interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Greg, speaking of Manoosh, I was just watching that episode. That actor has a lot of potential as a reoccurring bad guy.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yeah the guy who said that there is no chemistry like Zac and Yvonne is right, I just saw yvonne in the Aussie drama headland and yvonne does have good chemistry with that guy but not the same chemistry that she has with Zac. I wonder if Zac would not mind a Chuck and Sarah temporary split especially with the lovely Greata's that are coming through, I mean Oliva Munn, enough said.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Still waiting for the announcement that the Manoosh & Lazlo combination of evil inventors will be coming after Chuck. Most of the other baddies we've seen in the Chuck universe have been more a match for Casey & Sarah (physical threats of the traditional spy ilk), but both Lazlo & Manoosh were geeks whose intelligence was the trait that made them dangerous. I love when Zac gets to show off Chuck's intellect and I think we lost some of that in S3 with the introduction of Intersect 2.0 and I'd adore an episode that focuses on that angle.

As for Chuck & Sarah...there will be internal drama...all relationships have it. I don't think they need to break them up to show those conflicts and the growth that comes from them (or the make up sex that follows). For example, I think the obvious one will be the subject of a future involving children. Since Ellie & Awesome are going to become parents & Chuck will be searching for his mother...family is going to be a BIG focus in S4. I can't imagine the creative team won't mine Sarah's personal fears about becoming a parent or even Chuck's abandonment issues (his father left to protect him & Ellie...what if Chuck had to make a similar sacrafice). I really hope that's the kind of obstacles & debates we see in S4...it will keep Chuck & Sarah fresh but also 'real'.

ALSO - I stated this on Twitter but I'll reiterate here...I know there's a FB group to support our beloved @LittleChuckFan getting a guest spot as Greta in S4. I love the idea of a cameo for Bailey (considering all she's done), but since TPTB have cast the role of Greta as a recurring CIA operative for the BuyMore, I don't think Greta is a role she can play. However, if the writers DO have Chuck & Sarah tackle the issue/conflict of having kids, I'd propose that Bailey would be a great fit as the daughter of one of the Greta's. Someone Sarah comes to admire & respect at the CIA run BuyMore...and in the end, she learns that Greta is a mother, ultimately proving that you can be a spy and a parent. Basically, I'd like to see LittleChuckFan as LittleGreta instead :-) Just my $0.02.

    ReplyDelete
  49. yeah Tim I think with regards to a chuck and sarah split based on her interviews Yvonne is more of a shipper than Zac, So I suppose Zac probably would not mind having PLI's like the lovely Gretta's, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wendy, I think most fans although they loved the tenderness and sweetness between chuck and sarah in season 3 are with Magnus and would love to have the passion return from seasons 1 and 2.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Totally agree with Jason. The Chuck/Sarah relationship is a major part of the show, but it's not the only part (which reminds me of another pet peeve: every time someone brings up why shows die if they resolve a will-they-won't-they relationship, they refer to Friends. Hello, Friends had like nothing going on BUT relationships. The shows I watch actually have plots and other things to retain interest!). I may not be a typical viewer, but the will-they-won't-they thing always drives me nuts, especially if it involves characters I really like. I want them to be happy, they are happy together, can we just get them together like they obviously want to already, geez.

And honestly, I do think the weird thing TV does with relationships is...kind of damaging to real-life relationships. Could we maybe have a couple on TV who have problems and fight but genuinely love each other and, I don't know, actually get stuff done with saving the world and all instead of endlessly descending into drama?

Chuck isn't a soap opera; there's a lot more going on than Chuck/Sarah drama. Focusing on that and ignoring everything else too much is the danger, not letting Chuck and Sarah have a decent relationship while other stuff happens.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think "F" is the most probable route that the writers will use. But what gets me is that they feel like there always has to be relationship-ending drama in order to keep the show interesting. They've tried it a couple times and realized that it didn't work, and scrapped plan b and went back to plan a (ex. Chuck vs. the Beefcake). It only makes sense to keep them together in a more realistic manner. Sure, couples have disagreements and fights. But when you split up two characters with the incredible chemistry that Yvonne and Zac bring, you're committing TV show suicide. Schwedak knows what's on line this season. I don't think they're willing to pull a stunt like that again. The writers are smart and creative. They can come up with some great stories and arc that will blow are minds. They've done it before. They can do it again.

  54. Based on the comic con panel when Josh said that chuck and sarah are a couple and that we have learned, yvonne gave a "yeah" and based on some of the interviews she has given with mo ryan and others she seems happy with the current status, so I suppose I could give an idea about what to do to split chuck and sarah up but I am afraid that Yvonne will kick my behind if I do and she could totally do that she has mad kung fu skills, so i will not and lets hope they make it interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Based on yvonnes interviews she seems like such a bubbly person, looking at her in real life and then when she is the only person who has had to do most of the drama on chuck I like her am hoping they can give her more material like that, I know it makes a bit boring tv but her smile is the cutest smile in the world and she really plays well off of Zach (like everyone else to be fair) so I am kind of rooting for them to stay together. Option F

  56. I think it is safe to say that Yvonne is a fan of the romance between Chuck and Sarah. I don't think Zac is NOT a fan, but I think he is more about the Chuck and Morgan bromance. Still, they are professionals and will do as they are told. :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Well i know what i would choose if i were zac and that is screen time with yvonne, lol. Yeah I get why zac is into the bromance, him and Josh do spend time together at all these events around town and the have such a natural ease about them especially during interviews. So working more with Josh they can be the real them, because they have a real organic friendship off set and it probably is more easy and fun for zac. Plus the have hardly shared too much on screen time together over the 3 seasons as a whole. I think zac and Josh are sorta best friends. I agree with Magnus though they are pros and will do what they are told.

  58. Hi Magnus,

I would like to see the passion ramped up again, I get that in season 3 that they were in love, but man most those kisses, I mean I guess I kiss all my friends that are girls like that when I greet them, it is so toned down. So lets hope they do get those colonel/salami scenes back in the mould, where you get that sort of carnal intent from both of them that they are enjoying their relationship and the progression of it and the learning of it. It would in a way make it more real.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think part of the problem of season three was there was either too much Chuck and Sarah, or no Chuck and Sarah at all. I missed the balance of season 2. I don't really mind where they take the romance, as long as they give it the proper amount of air time.

  60. I think they need to address that chuck needs to take a leaf out of captain awesomes book and buy sarah jewellery just because it is monday (stop being a cheap skate man, tiffany's is just for browsing - jeese) and start making breakfast for her in bed man come on you got the most beautiful girl in the world man start manning up. I am sure if he starts treating her right and I hope casey and morgan start riding him about this too, that way they can get that relationship angst that is good angst and is real and as a girl we all understand that he should not take sarah for granted. You know what you have to do chuck so just do it.

  61. Were I in Chuck's place, I would be buying that girl jewelery every week!

  62. I think I go with answer B. They screwed up the romance part royally last season, and I don't really care anymore. They also caused severe damage to the Sarah character after how she was portrayed.

  64. I would really like to see Ellie's reaction to the fact that chuck and sarah you know made love, yes I said it made love, for them sex is to crass, they have a beautiful thing, anyway I digree, I would like to see her reaction to the fact that her brother waited 3 years to be with sarah intimately. I think she would be really proud of him and maybe she will give the squee she gave at the end of tango, oh am I shipper or what, lol.

  65. You know what I have not thought of that actually, and I have watched the series from the beginning, the fact that chuck and sarah never did it for 3 years, man that never happens in real life, seriously only on tv. I do hope we get some of that passion back between them (salami).

  66. Mike, I was friends with a girl for 10 years before we slept together. So... you are right. It never happens. ;)

  67. Too be honest I watch chuck with my mom and she loves captain awesome for the same reason I love chuck and sarah (it is not that I am crazy for them to be together) for her it is that Awesome has such a sunny disposition and he treats Ellie wonderfully and chuck too even though he does not have to and he makes an effort with chucks friends and my mom says it really is beautiful. I hope we get that in season 4 that chuck treats sarah really well, like she deserves to be treated, like his queen.

  68. But did you love her from day 1 like chuck and sarah loved each other, also they have both been wanting to be together since day 1 and it has not happenned for 3 years and they were never friends or they never intended to be friends they always wanted more. Also I agree with May now that they are together they are cute and beautiful, for me when they were on the train and they just left the terroist in the dining cart and toasted them sarah's hand wave was so cute.

  69. Mike, I am not about to air all my personal laundry on this site but... it happens. It happens a lot more than you might think.

  70. One thing I love about chuck is the chuck and sarah relationship but looking at the concept that chuck is a regular guy who is a geek I do not know whether I buy into it when chuck is played by the beautiful and handsome Zac Levi. Bare with me I am being positive here, Zac Levi is an extremly attractive guy watching this series I never thought that bryce, awesome or casey were really way better looking then him. Magnus even you said in the honeymooners podcast episode in response to Prez bringing up the point that chuck said I can't believe she's with me and you said if I were Zac Levi I would not feel that way. So really just for discussion how much really is sarah giving up on looks because she loves his brain, imo not much because he is very attractive at least to me.

  71. Oh I forgot not to mention that he is charm and charisma personified, Zac/Chuck just oozes Charm and a great sense of humour, if he bulked up a little and started to wear better clothes I would totally pick up Chuck. Now thinking of it I am probably anwsering my own question, it is not that chuck is not handsome is that there is potential and I suppose Sarah fell in love with him and saw that potential to be a great man.

  72. Granted, in Honeymooners, Chuck is very pretty. Whereas in season 1 and even 2, he was uglied up a bit. You know, with that wild hair and those sideburns. So, by the time he gets Sarah, he isn't that much of a geek anymore. He is a hot agent.

  73. Hi Magnus,

Michelle I think you have basically nailed what the major part of this show is about. For the more analytical fans the show is not about a nerd trying to get a girl that is way out of his league or a girl falling for a guy just because he is innocent and sweet, it is a part for sure but not the main part for me. I think the point of the story is that Sarah met chuck and saw a man that could be great and could do anything in the world and that is what for me makes their relationship special not the hot make out sessions or the sex, it is that she wants to be by his side and make him the man that everyone around him sees who he could be (Morgan, Elllie, Bryce, Cole, Casey, etc) and you see that she does that as early as Tango when he says what is the point of doing these great things if no one knows and she says you know and so do I. It really is so romantic and fans just do not see it, in return chuck gives her the loving, caring and sweet man that is always there for her, a man she never had in her life before because they all abondoned her.

  74. Hi Magnus,

Michelle your right ones of chucks to do list is to bulk up a little and he would be perfect. So in season 4 I would like to see sarah feeding chuck more food then he normally eats and make him bigger, she has done well with his confidence and other aspects of his personality now she need to work on his body shape, writers you heard it from here. Sarah feed you man, lol.

  75. Yeah I think that jonny is right and that is why the early part of season 3 is a little sad, where chuck has to develop as a spy and he had to do it without sarah by his side, you want them to have that kind of interaction like Tic Tac where she is there for him and she can push him along in her own way. Oh Jonny you forgot Awesome he made hints in season 2 earlier that chuck should and could do more with his life and when he found out chuck was a spy he said I knew you were not a loser who worked at a buymore, he had faith in chuck to.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Nick You forgot Roan, that guy gave chuck the Montgomary attack at the end of seducation because he had faith that chuck could get sarah. I love Roan quickly discerned that chuck and sarah were more then partners and he baited chuck into kissing sarah, as soon as Roan said I will get agent casey to kiss her the look on chuck's face as if to say oh hell no! not for one second is casey kissing my girl, priceless !

  77. Yeah I think that is why I think that it is a little disappointing why the fans reacted the way they reacted in season 3, a lot of them did not see that something deeper was going on with chuck and sarah and most fans just wanted to see them together because (based on reading comments on blogs and forums) they thought that if chuck got the girl then it would be them getting the girl in a strange and perverse way. Don't get me wrong I am happy that they are together I just wish that fans understood the deeper issues that the writers are trying to push across to the audience.

  78. Looking at these discussions on the chuck and sarah relationship has made me think of what the show is about and it is why I like lost. Chuck like lost is about it's characters, to love this show I think you have to believe that ultimately it does not matter if we ever knew what the island was or all the mythology about it and to a certain extent what the ring or Fulcrum is about. In Chuck versus the Ring part 1 when he is standing over the intersect computer thinking about what he should do destroy it or download and then destroy I never thought that oh they are reintersecting him just to keep the story going. In that episode he found out everything that Bryce did for him, Casey showed in his way that he actually did respect chuck and sarah told him that she believed he was a hero and it was a moment that was all about him and his choice on the man he wanted to be. At that moment I had chills down my spine because he was making the right choice and all the other stuff about the goverment or fulcrum or ring or spies did not matter he was doing it for the people in his life and I never felt cheated. So in season 4 I do not mind if the spy stories are not great because in the end of the day all that matters is the people on this show and how they strive to find a semblence of peace and happiness.

  79. Adrian, my problem with season 3 was how badly the Shaw and Sarah romance arc was constructed, not that it existed. I never had any problems with Bryce or Cole having a relationship with Sarah (and in fact, it would have been Bryce had Matt not ended up on WHITE COLLAR). Shaw just failed on more levels that I care to repeat.

Amrit, I just wrote a blog that will probably go up this weekend where I essentially conclude that... it is the characters that make the show, not the story.

    ReplyDelete
  80. The thing with this show is that because all the characters are like one big family it is hard for anyone to come in and fit. People say Bruce and cole were ok but they were only around for a short time and so we as an Audience were able to appreciate them. If cole or Bruce stayed longer and kept on getting in the way of chuck and Sarah they would have annoyed the fans. With shaw he was asked to be a mentor for 2 episodes then a love interest then a bad guy. I think he was given too much and I do not think the transition was seamless enough. For season 4 they should keep guest stars to a short term basis and focus on our characters.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Bryce and Cole DID annoy the crazy shippers. But they didn't annoy me... and I only care what I think. Shaw sucked as a romantic interest. We talked this issue to death. It is an accepted argument after months of debate. We are not rehashing it AGAIN for new people.
