CHUCK Versus Sarah and the Goodbye: 5.12 and 5.13 Discussion

CLICK HERE for my review of 5.13, Chuck Versus the Goodbye.

Oh damn... this is it, people. The day we have dreaded since the first time we thought CHUCK could end. The final episodes of CHUCK ever!

Well, or until they make a movie or Netflix series in 10-years.

So, write your feelings on the end in the comments section here. Discuss your expectations before you see the episode. Your reactions WHILE watching the episode. And your reactions AFTER watching the episode. Whatever you want to do.

Also, how many times did you cry, you big wuss?!

What were you most surprised by?

What was your biggest disappointment, if any?

GO!

UPDATE4: Sorry, but I hate the comment format that I was testing out. Upgrade your browsers!

  4. Hopefully not the END just an extended break until sometime in the future . They should make tv movies like CBS does with those Tom Selleck " Jesse Stone " ones . 1 or 2 a year , I'm not picky :)

It's amazing how much this show has meant to me over the last 4+ year watching it on tv . I can't begin to imagine what it was like for the cast and crew when they wrapped in early December working with each other day in and day out for that same period of time . All I know is that I will miss this show dearly and look forward to tomorrow night .

    Bravo !

  6. Chuck is the most amazing series i've ever seen, i'm sure that the tonights show is gonna be a blast! I've basically watch every episode about three times and cried in every single one,i've actually lost count of how much i've cried!

Me and my friend who are HUGE fans of chuck have been waiting for today, and the big finale, and it's been like a whole year for a week to pass, and now that the day is here, hours till tonight, it's feeling like days left!

    It has been quite a pleasure seeing this show, and i'm quite positive that the finale would be as awesome as the whole series itself, if not even more! Lets just wait and see, hoping chuck gets his beloved girl back :}

Well done to all the cast and crew, a job extremely well done! <3

I really need work today to distract me, but I have this fear I won't be able to focus.

  9. It is a property of Innovation that new ideas are born outside the box. There are sensitive souls, known as "early adopters", who have the power to see through the box and recognize the value and awesomeness of new ideas and entire genres of thinking. In the Arts we have experienced many such innovations: Looney Tunes, I Love Lucy, Star Trek, Monty Python's Flying Circus, M*A*S*H, Survivor, American Idol, and now Chuck.

Described as an "action-comedy/spy-drama", Chuck's cancellation was staved off by a host of world-wide early adopters who fell in love with the show. Social media, advertising campaigns, the Internet, and conferences were all utilized to coordinate their voices.

Years from now, as the box continues to expand, pundits will marvel at how the general population did recognize the magnitude of this innovation. But by that time, the early adopters will have moved on and continued to lead the pack as they always do.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In business school we were told to discount "early adopters" because they don't motivate the general public to try out a product. So, if your theory is somewhat correct, then early adopters not only didn't motivate the general public, but then abandoned the show as it went on.

    2. I'm just a physicist who understands the importance of time. Xerox PARC had a networked desktop computer in the 1970's with mouse, GUI, Ethernet, email, and laser printer. Your business school was talking about making sales "now", not in the future. The early adopters are just harbingers of things to come.

      Delete
    3. Right, but television is more like managing a product release for a mass market, as opposed to new innovation that is on the leading edge of some tech revolution.

A vast majority of the time, those "early adopters" of television shows need to lead immediate general adoption of that product or it dies. Networks don't have time to give a show time to gain legs unless it is a success out the door. Whereas the personal computer, or the Internet (or ARPANET) could live on for decades before they had their boom.

Mind you, my other graduate degree is in technology. :)

  13. I'm cautiously optimistic. I really want to love it, but I'm not sure about this amnesia storyline. I'll find out tonight if I buy it or not. Oh and I expect the ending to be cheesy. Don't take me wrong, I'm excited, Chuck's finales are usually a lot of fun, but I'm just not sure I'll totally love it. Just hope it at least doesn't suck.

  14. I am kind of indifferent at this moment. I'm doing lots of other things to keep me busy so I don't think about it too much. Though, I've been getting calls about this being the last night from a bunch of people. But I think I will be OK. And if the episode is good or great, then I will miss it even more.

If it sucks, then I will miss it less. But as with my favorite shows that have ended, like BSG and LOST, in time I will remember the show fondly and follow the work of those actors for EVER!

    ReplyDelete
  15. To be honest, I'm going into it with a determination not to be too critical. If that means turning off my brain and getting "stupid", so be it.

This show has been a fun experience and that's what I'll try to get out of it tonight.

As long as shows actually have an ending, I don't really miss them. It's like closing a book that you enjoyed. I'll just have to pick up another good book at some point. It was the same way with B5, Farscape, BSG. I don't think I'm going to miss the show as much as the experience of being a fan of the show.

    1. I'm not going to be able to go in stupid. I'd love to be able to do it but I'm going to poop all over the show and everyone who has ever worked on it if it sucks!

But I doubt I will have to do that. :)

  18. I would like to give a piece of advice to all my fellow Chuck fans before watching the finale.

If you compare the Chuck finale to other series finales then the episode will be a lot better for you.

If you go in expecting this great mind blowing episode that will be the greatest thing ever you'll very likely be disappointed.

I've noticed how a lot of people for whatever reason have huge expectations for series finales and are always disappointed.

Realistically the thing to know is that series finales are generally not very good episodes.

I'm sure Chuck could top a lot of other series finales with minimal effort but is the finale going to be thought of as one of the greatest episodes of the series? Probably not.

I think that's the right way to look at it.

To be honest i am more looking forward to episode 12 Chuck versus Sarah because the series always does great penultimate episodes.

It is great that Chuck is getting some type of ending because so many television shows don't.

I thought it was a very successful finale, especially the first hour. I thought the first episode was near perfection.

I'll rank it up there with Lost and Friday Night Lights for finales that I thought were terrific in the way they closed out their series'.

  34. Allow me to say that both episodes, the highs and lows.. were outstanding. Wonderful even. The ending? My new ending is the family bit in vs Baby, because this was just retarded. How was it a good idea to say "Let's take season1 through 5 and basically render them meaningless so we can reset THE WHOLE FRAKKING THING at the very end! Brilliant!"

Simply put, Faildak can eat a giant you know what.

    1. but it didn't you don't know maybe it did work. And also old sarah probably wouldn't have been so emotional on the beach and laughing when he told her the stories plus tell him to kiss her. It was a good ending leaves it open for more work if there was ever a chance, but doesn't make it necessary.

  45. What a beautiful ending to an amazing show. I will miss the whole thing. The actors and their characters were amazing too. A little piece of TV dies tonight with this show ending. It's getting harder and harder to find shows to love. Plus you are almost afraid to because the lack of commitment from the Networks to support their shows long term. A happy day. A sad day. Thank you Chuck and all involved in making this show. I really enjoyed every moment. Thank you.

  50. I must say, I love the way they ended it. It requires somewhat of an imagination. I hate it when shows end defining every detail. Some things we should use our imagination for and create our own ending. Bravo!!!

  51. chuck vs. sarah was a top 10 chuck episode in my opinion. the first half of goodbye was utter s**t the second half was great. It is a great way to end the show because everyone is begging for more which is brilliant. it is kind of irritating that 5 years of character development just got flushed down the toilet but hey, what do I know?

    ReplyDelete
  52. 5.12 was pretty good and I actually liked the whole Sarah with amnesia plot in it much more than I thought I would. However, 5.13 ended up pretty much how I expected... and I still can't, for the life of me, figure out why Fedak thought this was the BEST way to go with it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Glad to see you somewhat agree with what I thought. I mean I get that amnesia is tragic and man did Chuck have to suffer, but the show's called "Chuck".. holy crap did he get the short end of this stick. Not only is he now in a one-sided marriage with a woman who doesn't really remember anything over the past five years, but we as fans are .. cheated out of all of that development 'hardened Agent Walker' went through.

We got some giggles, and laughs, and a montage leading to a kiss>fade to black sort of ending. Can Fedak never work again? Please? :(

      Delete
    2. IMO, her remembering irene demova and other stuff signifies she's slowly remembering things. Even if you dont believe that, it's clear she's falling in love all over again.

I think of it as the Sarah thing being similar to what happened to the characters on Lost.

Chuck and Sarah Lived Happily Ever After!

For five years, then they got divorced and she married Shaw. She had his baby too.

      Delete
    3. I thought you mentioned somewhere that the very last scene was a perfect 10 for you? Did they change it?

I actually enjoyed Chuck vs. Sarah much more than I thought I would as well. Amnesiac Sarah was scary but still kinda awesome.

      Delete
    4. I thought 5.12 was pretty great, but we lost a lot of momentum in the actual finale. I was hoping to see Team B really kick butt and come up with some awesome plan to take Quinn apart, but they just sort of stumbled around until Sarah got tired of all the foreplay and shot him dead. Even Chuck re-downloading the intersect felt like kind of a waste because all he did with it was defuse a bomb. By my count he's done that 4 times under his own power. I get that the whole point was for Sarah to miss the opportunity to regain her memories, but it felt strangely anti-climactic. I'm not all that bothered by the very end, though. It seems like the idea is for Chuck and Sarah to fall in love all over again, and to me that's more sweet than bitter.

  53. Loved the finale!!! Thanks to Chuck for giving me and my family 5 years of something to look forward to watching on TV!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Nothing was erased. What has happened has happened and the ending was pretty clear that Sarah was back on the track with Chuck and wanted relearn everything.

And the kiss, Chuck & Sarah story was a fairytale so I'm assuming it worked. If not literally then metaforically.

  55. I cried all through the last 30 minutes :( I probably wouldn't have cried if I didn't know it was the final episode, but dang it was a good ending <3 omg, has a television show ever been picked back up after a series finale by another network? 58. Oh, and my god were their 'partings' rushed as hell. Chuck and Ellie's goodbye.. Casey and Chuck's.. five years, and we get some rushed goodbyes as it usually is with these finales

    ReplyDelete
  59. I thought the finale was pretty good.

It didn't really feel like a finale except for some callbacks and a of couple moments at the end.

It was better than a lot of other series finales.

I thought it was implied at the end that Sarah would get her memory back.

    ReplyDelete
  60. In Sepinwall's series finale interview with Fedak he got Fedak to admit that Chuck and Sarah will continue life as husband and wife, I think he did that. Sepinwall is shipper and he would not let Fedak off without knowing that, look at his series finale review and he pretty much said that the romance drove this show.

Great finale...I think it was awesome. Watching Sarah relearn everything and take that leap by asking for a kiss was actually pretty impressive growth and a great call back to all those times where Sarah gave Chuck permission to kiss her or she instigated the kiss.

    ReplyDelete
  61. As for whether or not Sarah remembers, I guess that is up to the audience to argue. However, we are meant to think that those two kids fell in love all over again... or I should say, that Sarah fell in love with him all over again, even if she doesn't remember.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I cried afterward a very little bit. The episode was good, not the best, not the worst. The thing that got me to cry a little was just the fact that it's over. I honestly love this show and I don't know what to do without it. Cheesy or not, this was so good and I loved it so much. I just don't know what to say

    ReplyDelete
  63. as much as I wish that it had been a perfect ending where she remembered, don't you have enough trust in sarah that, after 5 seasons, a perfect magical kiss would bring back all her memories? and that everything ended happily and perfectly?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think it is about trust. I think people want the perfect scene in their mind to have been played out... and for some, or maybe many, it wasn't.

It's okay. Just do what I'm doing and watch Chuck Versus the Honeymooners and pretend the show ended there. ;)

      I'M KIDDING!

      Delete
    2. Trust me, I'm the type of person that hates anything but happy endings...truly, I'm hoping that one day my own Chuck comes (but that's besides the point). However, I truly believe that Sarah would have remembered, after everything they went through the last 5 years, that after that one perfect magical kiss, she remembered everything. But maybe that's just me being a hopeless romantic...

      Delete
  64. Reprogramming Sarah's memories with the intersect would have been the worst thing. Those would not have been real memories, just a program in your brain that makes you think you remember something. She would have been just a robot after that.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I didn't even think about this until someone just reminded me of something... but the Intersect in these final episodes was a total McGuffin. That's lame. They try to get it, then Chuck uses it so he can stop a bomb that HE DOESN'T STOP WITH THE INTERSECT. Making that whole ridiculous plot pointless... and suddenly all he has left is a mind wiped wife.

    LOL!

    Oh, Fedak.

    1. Chuck had to flash to access the main panel, if I remember correctly.

I totally loved 5.12, but I need to breathe and think about 5.13. It was quite a ride, though.

      K.T.

      Delete
    2. I thought he needed the Intersect to get into the case, because he couldn't access the bomb to defuse it in time? Otherwise Jeffster would never have been able to stop singing and Morgan would have had to go on conducting (which I thought was hildarious, btw).

      Delete
    3. Yeah, so he needed the Intersect to access the panel... so it's only mostly a McGuffin.

      Let the general die.

      Delete
    4. My main problem with using the intersect to stop the bomb instead of using it to trying to give Sarah back her memories, was that it was Chuck´s decision and I feel it should have been Sarah´s.

She could have made the same decision, but that was her life taken away and her memories. She doesn´t only exist for Chuck. Her losing her memory is mostly her loss, even if it sucks for Chuck as well that his wife doesn´t fully remember him.

    5. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one. Sorry, Chuck had to do it. LOL

  66. I see people are divided on the series finale, I can understand why. But one positive is that since Fedak admitted that they end up together from now on in Chuck can select information he wants her to know. Like he can omit Beefcake and Shaw and Mouser and all the other crappy stuff...she already trusts Chuck that is a given so I think they will be fine and ok.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thing is, lots of people didn't want the resolution they were dreaming about to remain in their head. They wanted to see it. Five years and you have to IMAGINE that they lived happily ever after? I get why some people are pissed. I'm not pissed because I was hoping Jill would come back and sweep him off his footsies. ;)

      Delete
    2. But with the Sepinwall interview (which I kind of find silly that a showrunner has to spell out that they will be fine) tells fans what the final scene was and where they are heading. Oh and he can omit Hannah, Jill and Lou too, he can lie and totally say that he stayed faithful to her and loved her so much, lol. See silver lining! all those times fans were annoyed by PLI's...wiped away, all those delays and crap the writers were stalling at times....GONE! As far as Sarah knows...she met Chuck fell in love and they were married...ok now I am forcing myself to love the ending....Fedak! Why? 5 years of history just gone! yikes what was he thinking, even Yvonne was dubious and with good reason as was Zach. The whole cast looked pensive in those interviews and he Ryan just said he wins the girl back no worries...it is like even they could not beleive Fedak was doing this and so they believed in the happy ending even if Fedak did not...I am over thinking this....they lived happily ever after, I choose to believe that.

    3. LOL!

I loved the LOST finale because it was about characters. That show at least went out on a whole hour about the characters. CHUCK spent the final act on quickly saying goodbye. I prefer the LOST or BSG extended character goodbyes ANY day.

    4. Lost was all about mythology, that's how it was marketed every season and that's why I bought it. It didn't deliver, but fanboys naturally keep defending it.

    5. Yeah, with Fedak writing the ep, I expected a lot of action and the character moments only getting the last act. That seemed to be his M.O.

It´s also a little sad, that Sarah´s memory loss meant she didn´t get any meaningful goodbye scenes with Casey or Awesome and Ellie. I wouldn´t have minded a Casey/Sarah hug.

  70. I really can't believe Chuck is over. I can remember the pilot episode. I happened to catch it by accident at my parents house. It came on with an amazing action packed opening and with the familiar theme song by Cake I was hooked. The DVR was set to tape all episodes from then on and i patiently waited week to week for every new episode. I remember how upset I was when the show was almost cancelled and the fans were outraged and managed to create enough of a stir to bring the show back. It was an amazing 5 seasons and I can't believe it's over. Maybe it's just the nerd in me but I feel like I connected with this show more than anything else I've ever watched on tv. It was comfort, it was an escape and I really don't know what I am going to do without my Chuck.

Zac anchored the episode with the pure heart of a nerd, The heart of the show love and family no matter what that family looks like is the deal. Take on me brilliant, finding Gertrude spot on, Clara, awesome and Ellie and Grandma nice, my forever connection with we heart chuck priceless

  75. Two brilliant episodes that led up to the most emotionally manipulative and cruel ending they could ever have cooked up short of killing off a main character. The story that preceded the end was so good that I'm really just trying not to think about the last bit, but my God, what a terrible creative decision. Incoming flood of fanfiction writers desperately trying to give the series the happy ending it was advertised as having.

Have to agree with Magnus above that the especial kick in the teeth is that Chuck didn't need the Intersect to stop the bomb. You could maybe argue that he needed it in order to open the bomb (I'll have to rewatch), and maybe that's what the writers were going for ... but I don't know.

Now when I rewatch the series, all I'll be able to think about is how everything I'm seeing is something that Sarah is going to forget and may not entirely get back. Yeah, it's implied that she's starting to remember a few things, but Morgan didn't recover everything, and I don't expect she will either. Some story lines or series benefit from intentional vagueness, but this is not one of them. I don't want to rewatch the series wondering which moments Sarah will never get back.

Not even a shipper, but that was a cruel thing to do to what was almost inarguably the show's best character.

    And now I'm crying again.

On this case however I was too invested in the characters to think it was ok to end it this way. Yeah I know, I'm a sucker, but I find it somehow sad to leave it on this note...

The whole memory loss intrigued me from the beginning with, even though 5.12 was really great.

  81. Ok now I see what they were going for, they forgot that no one gave crap about the plot and only the characters. This whole finale was setup so we could go over past moments while on a crappy mission. Whereas this whole episode should have been about Sarah finally getting all her memories back via flashbacks through stuff that resonated with her but no, nope did not happen. Maybe they thought that they have had so many series finales or would be series finales that fans would not mind but this series finale just did not need to happen like this. Trying to stay positive but this should have been an hour solely focussing on characters and characters only, what were they thinking?

I think they should have had Chuck disarm the bomb using his mad hacker skills thus proving the point, they have been driving to all season, that Chuck doesn't need the intersect to be the hero and used it instead to upload all of Sarah's old memories... but that's just me. Other than that, it was pretty good. Loved the Jeffster performance and record deal at the end. God, I'm gonna miss Chuck!!!

  87. 5x12 was brilliant. 5x13 was S**t they went overboard on the callbacks, like it was one tree hill territory with all those flashbacks. The following the target to settings identical to sarah's memories was ridiculous and pointless. The intersect was a red herring and completely useless to the resolution. making the ending more bitter than it should've been. that being said i did like the ending. 1. I think a lot of people's problem with it (including mine) was we didn't get to see some hard evidence of her remembering her time with Chuck. Okay, she remembered how to sort cups in a Weenie shop, she remembered the virus.. so we're left to assume that at some point, much like with Morgan, she'll remember herself as well.

Yeah, that's all well and good, but in a TV show, we fans actually like to see this stuff..on TV. You know? If we wanted 'happier endings in our minds', we'd read fanfiction. This is the main issue with the finale for me. We won't get to SEE this. Just fades to black and 'tada, that's it, move along kiddies.'

I didn't think an ending to a show could tick me off so much, DR. :( I'm honestly, truthfully disappointed moreso than I ever thought I could be, and I've been defending this all week. Hooray for knowing where to place my trust.

  90. Well I am super frustrated and disappointed. What a dumb thing to do ... Give an ambiguous and unsatisfactory ending. I am in the half of the fan base that is ticked after committing 5 years to watching the character development between Chuck and Sarah.. To have all that negated in the final two episodes.
News flash... Unsatisfying endings do not sell DVDs. Witness Farscape and the anemic DVD sales after the original dumb "writers in a snit ending". They had to do a made for TV movie with a satisfying ending to get those DVD sales churning. Half the fan base will now be loathe to bring in new fans with a series stupid ending.

  91. I see some people as i expected are not taking my earlier advice about comparing the Chuck series finale to other shows finales.

I think thought the finale was okay and it was one of the better series finales that i have seen.

I would not have went with Sarah still having amnesia in the finale.

I would have started the Sarah gets the intersect arc an episode earlier and then ended the stuff with Quinn at the end of Chuck versus Sarah.

Then i'd leave episode 13 as just everyone saying goodybe.

I would have Sarah regaining her memories in episode 13.

One thing i wanted to see more of was everyone saying goodbye to each other instead of it being rushed.

I'm not surprised by that though because Magnus warned that it would be rushed.

  92. The only reason the shippers are mad is because CS actually got married and planed on starting a family. If CS never got married or never got together This ending would've been perfect for everyone. maybe some of you who were disappointed need to think about it that way.

  95. Two good episodes that brought back lots of fun&memories
while the final scenes where not exactly what i wanted the way i see it : we got 80 minutes of good Television from our favorite show followed by 5 minutes composed of an elusive, rushed, unsatisfying send off for the characters

For people who want to crucify Fedak for this(while i can relate to them and i am clearly disappointed with the ending he chose) i raise the following question : what did you guys expect?
most of you are long time fans just like me so you saw other half season ending that where meant to be series finale
Chuck vs. The Other Guy - "shut up and kiss me" followed by a kiss and a fade to black with no real relationship resolution, luckily for us the "Honeymooners" master piece came and everything was great
Chuck vs. The Push Mix - nice proposal but we never hear Sarah say yes, again luckily for the back 11 order we get closure and they sort everything out including a wedding : )
Chuck vs. The Good Bye - "Chuck kiss me" again ambiguity and no real resolution, unfortunately this time the back 9 order was not in the cards so we have to get closure using our imagination

So the writers didn't do anything on purpose, they did what they always do, they left a certain level of mistery with no clear resolution & closure

That's not going to overshadow my love for this show and the great joy i got watching this beautiful piece of Television history #GoodByeChuck i will always remember you

  96. I think the 5.12 was amazing, really. It was evil also, some of the Sarah scene, I mean the whole You really love scene was very evil. I need to give credit for this. When Sarah watched de dvd-s I was hope full. But I think the end is not worth it. I think, this was a very very bod move to finish the show. I not hate it, I dissapointed, sad, and felt cheated.

    ReplyDelete
  97. How cares about shippers, what does that even mean? I've never figured it out. Useless term.

This was about the show ditching the characters for the final. Nothing made any sense, it was like a "De-evolution" of the show, a reset. We had none of the characters we had gotten to know, worst of all we did not have Sarah, the Sarah who had become so awesome the past few years that she was better than Chuck. And we the fans got robbed out of that character for the final and we got "Zombie Sarah" and for that alone I feel like grabbing a heavy object and smashing #(*@&#@

It's not comparable to the Lost ending, the Lost ending was not great but at least we got to say goodbye to the fully developed characters that we had all grown with, but not here. Our Sarah Walker, the best dang character on the show, was killed a few episodes ago and we never got her back to say goodbye.

This whole storyline should have been a cliffhanger and then something to start a season with, not freaking end a season with. God... what a disaster. Normally I would give an episode like that a rating of 5 or 6 out of ten but for a series final?

That automatically deducts 5 points, it was like a bad Star Trek episode.

I swear to you, it's like they hired Brandon Braga to write that final. It was off paced, rushed, weird, and it didn't feel like Chuck at all. I'd rather have someone pour acid on my privates than ever watch that thing again.

I am going to go watch the BSG Final, then Serenity, and then maybe the last episode of Cheers just to wash the bad taste out of my mouth. I am about to vomit.

  98. I thought it was emotional and I mostly enjoyed it. Amnesiac Sarah was scary and brilliant. And Chuck was truly great in their scene in the house. The finale left me with a heavy heart, because the show is over and because the ending was really bittersweet.

However it wasn´t so brilliant that I am enraged not to be able to see more. I mostly hated how they made it look as if Sarah´s feelings for Chuck is all that she is and was in the last five years. As much as it sucks for Chuck that his wife might never completely remember him, Sarah lost so much more than that. She lost her friendships with Morgan and Casey and the feeling of thinking of Ellie and Awesome as family. Everything that made her truly believe that a life outside the spy world is possible. Her feelings for Chuck are a big part of that, but they aren´t everything.

And yet with Chuck´s decision to use the intersect for disarming the bomb instead of trying to use it to recreate Sarah´s memory they made it look as if that was mostly his sacrifice. I don´t think they should have recreated Sarah´s memories that way. I don´t want to believe that true feelings and memories can be created that way. But the decision to not do that should have really been Sarah´s and not Chuck´s.

Sarah did convey how lost she felt pretty well, but I disliked how much they focused on only Chuck losing her. It would have been nice to have something that alluded to all the other people in her life losing her as well, though. Maybe that was more subtle and I missed it, but I thought it lacked in that regard.

This storyline really could have used more time. And Sarah being secretly evil was fun. I wish they would have let this storyline play out for most of the season and given us a satisfying conclusion at the end.

It's not like the screen went to black as soon as Chuck sat down next to her on the beach. Between the last montage we got and her remembering things throughout the episode, Fedak and Schwartz put the puzzle together for the most part.

  101. I was really hoping for that Disney kiss magic...Beauty and the Beast style where fireworks are involved. I WANT to love this finale soo bad, but I feel that I can't.

I have mixed feelings about the finale. I'm all about the romance...I wouldn't call myself a crazy shipper, but I'm a girl and if this was just an action and comedy show I would probably not have watched. I was all about the 'cute' moments between Chuck and Sarah, but I never got angry at the writers or anything - just enjoyed the ride. So my fav part actually took place in 5.12 when she was going through the videos and said that she fell in love with Chuck Bartowski.

As for the final ending...When it faded out to the title "Chuck" I was waiting for the promo for next week and realized there wasn't was. The ending really gave me that feeling. Not really a cliffhanger, but just a lot of unresolved issues.

I do agree that it seemed that Sarah's five year development of going from stone cold killer spy to loving and sweet wife *with a badass side* was basically all for naught.

  107. Alright here we go,

I'm certainly going to forget some things here, so I may add some other stuff later.

First off, wow, that was freaking emotional as all hell. They really did a great job of bringing the series full circle with callbacks to the Pilot, and some great Chuck and Sarah memories. They also did a great job of diffusing tension in the 2nd hour with some well needed comedy (Morgan's Invisibility Cloak jokes being my favorite). Anyway, I think the rest of this may be best suited as pointing out great scenes:

    1) Chuck emotionally unloads on Sarah in their Dream House
-Zach Levi absolutely destroyed this scene, some great flashbacks, again really emotional.

    2) Sarah watches her video diary
-Wow, just wow, this may have been the most powerful moment of the first hour for me.

Overall, the rest of the first hour was very tense, and had a legit sense of danger to it...which is kind of hard to do for a show like Chuck.

    3) Sarah skydiving
-This was an awesome looking stunt, really went all out for this one.

    4) Morgan lashes out at Casey in Castle
-This was awesome, and super unexpected. Glad for Morgan calling out Casey on his bs excuses about the team making him 'soft' (this aspect of the plot felt kind of weird to me, a little off). Morgan didn't back down either, which was great.

    5) Chuck's Intersect Decision
-Chuck is on the roof and is forced to choose, save the crowd or get your wife's memories back? This reminded me a lot of the end of S2, Chuck having to choose to be the hero and make a GIGANTIC sacrifice). Another masterfully tense scene (I think I actually screamed NO when he put them on lol).

    6) The Beach
-Emotion, emotion, emotion. Music, flashbacks, implications, open endings, I think I'll wait to rewatch until I go into this further, but man I'll just say if I was in Fedak's shoes I don't think I could have done this. This was a ballsy choice, but like 80% of me think it works...more later

  108. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the Chuck finale ruined the entire series.

Chuck fans that are saying that are hyperbolic types.

I've seen series finales that did actually screw up the entire series but Chuck wasn't one of them.

The ending was still hopeful and it was open ended like a lot series finales have been lately.

Despite the Chuck finale not being great or even that good it was still better than most finales i have seen.

I think once again a lot of fans had their hopes too high for a series finale.

I would imagine that if the series got continued in comic book form or maybe even a movie five years down the road Sarah will have regained her memories by then.

I can't imagine her having amnesia forever.

  109. Also true,
The more I think about it, 5.13 was all over lame, and rape for everything not just the ending.

  110. Ryan McGee gave the finale an 'A' and said something interesting, let me parPhrase if I can...he said that he thought chuck and Sarah's happiness was always meant to end on milestones...get together, proposal, wedding, house, baby....but maybe we got something different maybe the home they wanted this season was each other. Throughout the series these two had a bond that drew them together, it never made sense it was never understandable but they kept on finding each other and maybe that is the point Ryan was getting at. I do not know how much I agree with him but those two just wanted deep down to be close and I think that kinda happened in the finale. Maybe every milestone is window dressing but they were together and that is all that matters....I do not know...we will see.

  111. I liked it more than I was expecting to, I did like a lot of the callbacks. I thought it was pretty funny when the Fulcrum agent from way back pointed out that The Ring were amateurs ... Thanks for finally pointing that out! Anyway, I think the end was a little heartbreaking. I am just thinking wow Sarah will never remember any of the amazing things that happened in the past five years. So sad. I guess I can hope that she got her memory back with that kiss...

    1. Is this why so many people are upset? You really took from that ending that Sarah is never going to get her memories back, ever?

I thought it was pretty clear that they're in there, it's just a matter of how long it takes Chuck to set them free. And Fedak thought the same, judging by the Sepinwall and IGN interviews.

  113. I will go on the record to say that the finale was darn good TV. It was well executed and I don't care what the knuckleheads out there say. If they can't stop being trolls now, then they never were true fans.

I liked the fact that the status quo was redefined in a way that nothing was hunky dory in the end, yet it was a positive, hopeful conclusion. Everything played back to the "I didn't fall in love with the Intersect, I fell in love with Chuck" basis. In the end, he shows her why she had fallen for him the first time. Marvelous. *commence troll heckling*

  114. It wasn't as bad as I feared, but not as good as I hoped. I don't feel like it wrecked the show for me but it could have been done better.

The resolution felt rushed in a way Lost and BSG didn't in taking the time to properly say goodbye. It felt like they all just split in a big hurry and those goodbyes that should have been there with more weight just weren't.

And I'm totally on board with Awelle and others who say that focusing on Sarah's amnesia as a loss only significant to Chuck is BS. Casey, Morgan, Ellie, Awesome, and maybe even Alex all lost their Sarah too, and just because she wasn't having sex with them doesn't mean it's not an important loss for them. They danced around the notion of others feeling that pain with some scenes but it never felt like it had any real weight.

Mostly, I really feel bad for Sarah the way it played out with people splitting town. (Granted, narratively, the resolutions make sense for those characters moving on in their lives.) But as for Sarah, sure, she'll regain her relationship with Chuck one way or another. But she's lost some important friendships that are unlikely to ever be fully regained, with Ellie and Awesome in Chicago and Casey off having spy adventures with Gertrude. If they only see each other at holidays or whatever, they're not going to be able to make the connections as close as they were.

So I'm kind of glad the deus ex machina of her magically remembering everything didn't come into play, but that choice demanded some care to be done properly. And I really feel like Sarah and Everyone Who Isn't Chuck should have been handled a heck of a lot better.

  115. Yeah i did like the cameo appearance from Mark Pelligreno in the finale.

I liked that he called the Ring a bunch of amateurs that was a cool callback.

I wanted Sarah to regain her memories during the episode and for longer goodbye's rather than being so rushed.

That's really the only things that i'd do differently.

    1. I'd do a lot differently... but calling the Ring a bunch of amateurs felt like I wrote it. ;)
