  1. Any elaboration on your Achilles Heel sexual act comment? Was it a joke? ;)

  2. Dude. If nothing else, you are a magnificent bastard! In the truest sense of the word!

    Great show. Congrats!

    Bring on S4! Woot!

  3. Magnus now that is how you promote a season.

If there was a way to hire you at NBC, I think you could sell the show so that they would get the #s we all wish they did.

Thanks for the question and answer part, and for your guest host who brought some knowledge along with yourself to the whole ratings thing.

The one thing on what you said, I wish they had gone balls out last year, especially at the beginning the ratings were not terrible and if they had, I think those folks would have stuck around.

It might be to late now, what you guys were talking about with the advertising was so depressing, but it is what I figured would happen at the end of last season.

Anyway thanks again, I can't wait for next Mon night now.

  4. Magnus if lets there is a season 5 will there still be a storyline to tell cause you made sound like the wtiters are going all out in season 4

    ReplyDelete
  5. I am sure they could tell another few seasons of stories. I just think they will need to challenge themselves more in season 5.... and if they make it to a 5th season, they will have earned it.

Jason, if NBC has any sense, they would have hired me. Or given me more access. But they and the WB are braindead and hell bent on following ridiculous protocol of butt kissing that nets you NO LOYALTY. People see right through the fake crap.

  6. I asked about a Sarah past, because Judkins/LeFranc in their recent interview has said they will be exploring a bit of Sarah past later on the season. Since they are shooting episode 6, they probably haven't gotten there yet.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'm not an native english speaker...so sorry for any mistakes.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Sorry for 3 posts in row...but i post as i listen - the whole Ellie/Sarah aspect and appendage thing was actually written by OldDarth, that you often do podcast with.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Kisku, it makes no difference who said it, you should not run with the notion of Sarah being Chuck's appendage. It is ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thank you so much for that. You amped up my excitement immensely.

And I remember very well you posting on forums at the end of season 2, how you could tell that they will use contrived scenarios to keep Chuck and Sarah apart and that season 3 would suffer from that. I also think you were incredibly honest about your early reviews of season 3.

So I am feeling pretty confident, that you must really love what you know of season 4, because I am pretty sure you never raved about season 3 like that. And I actually quite liked season 3, even though there were some mishaps.

I wish I could skip next week after listening to that. So thanks again.

  11. I loved season 3. It is my favorite season. I just think it has a poorly constructed fauxmance that sucked the love right out of episodes that should have had a bigger impact on the audience. The viewership should have grown following 3.13 but it didn't... and I think part of the problem was that it all felt flat due to the nature of the fauxmance.

But in season 4, they seem to be tossing out a lot of the useless junk they thought they needed to keep the audience engaged. It may not help the show grow any, but at least it will be a great ride for those who have stuck around.

  12. Btw i didn't mean a storyline where Ellie/Sarah have conflict over Chuck, but smth more in line where Ellie is not really accepting Sarah, because she is still in spy world - frankly i wish those two characters have a storyline that is not strictly about Chuck, like Casey and Morgan has - and giving them smth to do together would be most efficient way of doing so + it would give the show more balanced feel, beause especially in season 3, the show felt too much like a boys club, where neither of those 2 characters has much to do for large portion of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Kisku, Sarah is the guy in the relationship and Chuck is the girl. So, Sarah would prefer to be part of the boys club. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Could I be anymore excited now? Seriously. I can't wait another week. I want it to be September 20th NOW. Great podcast Magnus. Thank you!

  15. Hi Magnus,

You never answered Gina's question about the potential bed scenes, did you laugh because it was funny in that she is a pervert or that it will not happen or that it will happen and we as an audience will be happy? oh the possibilities.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ho Magnus,

Here is a scene that I would really like to see and if possible can you pass it onto your super secret fake insiders, please. I would like to see sarah and ellie butt heads over chuck, if you look at the relationship they both have with chuck they basically control him, in a sweet way, and I think right now they are on opposite sides of what they want for chuck, sarah wants him to be a spy with her and ellie does not, so to see them going at it would be so awesome. Chuck is sarah's man, if they are not going to throw in other romances this is a way they can keep it fresh and see chuck and sarah dealing with some issues, and ellie is an issue.

  17. I don't get how you can say chuck as a lead in to the Event has no baring with NBC? Obviously NBC is viewing The Event as the crown jewel on monday night, if they view Chuck as a weak lead in to the The Event they would probably be more inclined to replace it in hopes that another show with higher viewer rates will in turn lead to higher viewers for the The Event. TV networks to new shows on after well established shows all the time in hopes that the lead in adds to the ratings.

Wasn't that at least part of the reason Leno at 10:00 got canned? The local affiliates were pissed because their 11:00 news shows were dropping in ratings from a weak lead in.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I thought I read somewhere the Achilles heel was Sarahs inability to commit to someone who is not in risk of being killed. For example she could commit to daffy duck but not bugs bunny.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Anonymous the affiliates were forced to carry the show FIVE NIGHTS a week. That means if their viewers didn't like Leno, they would abandon the network every night and likely find local news on another channel (like FOX). It would be like putting CHUCK on at 8pm EVERY NIGHT and expecting the 9pm shows to retain its viewers, EVERY NIGHT, while other networks had the same shows on at 8pm that NBC had at 9pm.

Mike, I answered the bed question. But I cut it out. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh, you sly dog you.

All of us are perverts when it comes to Chuck and Sarah. That Colonel makeout has almost 500,000 views on YouTube.

    ReplyDelete
  21. can you maybe next time make a thread next time for people that want to ask you question. thanks

    ReplyDelete
  22. i mean for when people ask questions about the show chuck and you answer like you did on the lastest podcast.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I posted a blog here for people to ask questions. I then deleted that once I didn't need more questions.

I can do it again... but I didn't plan on doing another Q&A for future podcasts. Starting next week, until the end of the 13 episode run, we will be covering each individual episode. So, while I could take questions from people, I am not planning on it. If there is a demand for it, I will do it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ever think that Chuck is around because it is able to compete with Monday Night Football? If Chuck really has such a high male viewership, it is probably one of the few shows on Monday night that can draw away from MNF? This is just another reason why NBC screws Chuck with its timeslot. If it moved it to another weekday slot that isnt against MNF or House, it would be much more successful.

    ReplyDelete
  25. maybe you can same something about it in your next podcast to see what people think and if no one does then don't but if alot of people do then do if that is ok with you

    ReplyDelete
  26. We said that CHUCK is able to hold the ESPN demo... so, yes. We thought of it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think what I might do, question wise, is open up the CYT42 blog posting before we record it. Then, while we are recording (which happens immediately after the episode finishes on the east coast of the US), I will read questions and comments posted to the blog and respond. Then, if people have lingering questions the following week, they can post them in the next blog, and so on.

If we get little to no participation, then I won't do it anymore. If people dig it, then I will do it every week.

  28. Hi Magnus,

6 days left and still not a single promo for chuck or any NBC shows, what are they doing? I know it cost money to promote but they have to do something right?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Luke, I posted a link to the new promo on my Twitter account.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh thanks Magnus, this is short but cool. It looks like sarah knows everything about mom, cool. I am now so looking forward to next week.

    ReplyDelete
  31. "MekennaMelvin @greg2081 you'll have to watch to see ;) but there will defiantly be some Alex action in the next season of #CHUCK"

just got this on twitter and thought people would like to know. so either this means casey's daughter will be on a mission or two or casey will be going in a mission under his real name Alex.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Diane adds...

That is a good promo for Chuck. The count I have so far is the "Chuck promotes The Event" promo has run 5 times and this has run once.

The Chuck/Event promo doesn't sell Chuck, IMO.

The new Linda Hamilton promo needs to be scheduled a decent number of times to reach enough viewers. We'll see what NBC does over the next six days.

Meanwhile, Fox continues to blast away with House promos. I saw several of them during football on Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Awesomecakes, I may curse like a filthy sailor on the podcast, but the posting rules are... no expletives. So, thank you for the comment but I had to delete it.

    Diane, yep... it is bleak.

Luke, Sarah knows everything about mom? Slow down, there.

Greg, we saw Alex action last season too. She is a martial artist after all.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi Magnus,

I mean I think she actually knows that chuck is trying to find his mom, that's all. Based on the promo, Mama B looks awesome, I mean wow, the way she took those guys out is like what up I am in love with Mama B, she is BADASS. So if sarah and her come to blows it is gonna be awesome and I am now definately seeing where Ellie gets her leadership and definance from, like moma like daughter. So this season already from a 15 second promo looks like it is going to be freakin awesome, I love it !

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi this question is to anybody, does anyone know that generally when sarah kisses chuck but no other guy (well not for long) she puts her hands on his face the whole time she is kissing him from start to finish, I know perverty, but that is interesting. I know it is not a spoiler but I would like to know, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I just saw an interveiw that zac, josh, yvonne and dolph did and yvonne said that it breaks sarah's heart that she wants an open and honest relationship with chuck but he is lieing to her. Come on TPTB get to grips and sort it out, I love that chuck and sarah in seasons 1 and 2 had this really open and honest relationship for the most part (on chucks side) and it meant a lot to sarah you saw at times she would get angry at him if he was not honest with her because she loves him, I hope they return to that dynamic and soon, I can take him lieing to everybody else apart from sarah, morgan and casey.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Luke, stop reading or watching interviews and just watch the episode. That way you won't have to worry about it.

Georga, it is not perverted. But I have no idea what you are talking about so...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Georga, My best guess would be it is a physical way that shows she is in love with him (an acting technique) like the way she looks at him compared to other men. I think Magnus and his team might have mentioned it on previous podcasts that she looks at him differently and that is why it has or had been hard for viewers to believe that she could be interested in any other relationships. She also never leans back when she kisses chuck, even the great kisses with cole and bryce and especially shaw she would lean back, I think it is just great physical acting from a great actress, well that is my best guess.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Mark, if that is what Georga is talking about, then sure. It is probably a choice by the actor, though it is possible the writers put the action in the script.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Luke when Yvonne said that in the interview I guess she might have been joking, even in the season 3 DVD extras Yvonne said that fans love the tension (post mask, I am not so sure about that) and I think even going back to comic con 2009 when js was joking about ellie and awesome on the rocks she was the only one laughing, while the rest of the cast were stunned silent. I think she just might have a dry sense of humour like js, lol. I agree with Magnus and would not read to much into it at all. Yvonne is so sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Like I said in my super secret fake review of 4.01, he lies to everyone. He does it well. He is a spy.

    ReplyDelete
  42. this podcast is exactly what I needed to get pumped for monday. caaaanttt waiiitt

    ReplyDelete
  43. Has anybody realised just how good chuck is looking right now, I mean I knew that at some point they had to restore his looks when it came time to making him more of a super hero but wow, he is so attractive, they have given him his beautiful olive skin back, his hair is lovely and his dress wear is out of this world, I am now so in love with this guy and kind of jealous that sarah has him, oh to be sarah walker even for one day, sorry magnus, it is a girl thing.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Another thought ocurred to me and it is a little shallow I know, but for the first 2 and a half seasons up until honeymooners I used to wonder why arah kept turning down really attractive men like cole and bryce because I never really saw anything special in chuck that made me think she would choose him but after watching all the sneek peaks I take that back, boy do I take it back because he is so hot it must be illegal to walk around looking like that, he sizzles and I suppose that is a lesson to all of us there may be potential in everybody if you look deep enough, he is now way better looking then cole and bryce and shaw put together, man Zac is smoking !

    ReplyDelete
  45. Are you still sticking to your 18-49 rating of 0.9? For some reason I think it will be closer to a 2.0, even with the lack of Promotion, just sayin.

    ReplyDelete
  46. ZERO... POINT.... NINE!

If it gets a 2.0 without any promotion, then the show should be renewed or picked up for more episodes ON THE SPOT.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Diane says...

I hadn't weighed in on what I think the rating will be. The number of real Chuck promos have been increasing now that the premieres of Parenthood, Outlaw, and Apprentice are out of the way and their promos are out of the rotation.

But, too many of the promos are that lame "Chuck promotes the Event" thing that doesn't really sell Chuck. The Linda Hamilton one is good and the one where Chuck is part of the Monday night line-up is okay. They are the other two that NBC is running.

I'm going with a 1.3 for the premiere of Chuck. I'm most concerned about House on Fox because of their heavy promotion.

BTW-the number of people watching TV is 14% higher the 3rd week of September than it was on May 24th. IF Chuck got a 2.0 as BJ predicts, it would be a 14% increase over the rating of 418/419. Just sayin'.

    ReplyDelete
  48. That is really interesting.

While I am sure CHUCK can get a 1.8 or even 2.0 if people know it is on, I just don't see how many people will be tuning in when every other show at the 8pm hour has been promoted to death.

However, IF it does get a 2.0 (or better), then I think NBC should quickly move it to Friday nights and never promote it and order 10 more seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Diane says...

I've been compiling some benchmarks (Live + Same Day Adults 18-49):

    Heroes Premier last year: 2.8
After promotion that began in early August.

    Chuck S4 Finale: 1.8

Chuck S2 Premiere (last time it premiered in September and got similar amount of promotion as Heroes did last year): 2.8

    Chuck S3 Premiere: 2.9
The last was after a huge amount of promotion that started about six weeks prior.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi Magnus,

I am really worried about the Event, I know a lot of people have said that it should be awesome and cool, but listening to the latest sepinwall and Fienberg podcast on it they seemed really less than impressed actually the only new show at all of the shows debuting that they liked was lone star. So if the Event numbers are supposed to help bring up NBC Monday night and it turns out to be another Flashforward failure then I am worried about chuck. Maybe I am being a little to negative but I really hope with all the promos and sneek peaks that they are leaking fans just come back to the show and get on board for what I think will be an awesome ride.

    ReplyDelete
  51. People I know who have seen THE EVENT loved it. So, we shall see. And whatever happens with THE EVENT won't affect CHUCK much, so don't worry. CHUCK will live or die by its own numbers.

Diane, I would guess a realistic 1.5 with little promotion, but I am still concerned with fans who would tune in not knowing it is on. If they are not watching NBC during the handful of times they promoted the show, they won't know it is coming back. People still ask me if CHUCK is coming back in January, EVEN AFTER SEEING THE PROMO.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I hope that chuck does get a 2.0 or higher, because it does seem that everyone is excited about the premier of chuck. I mean some critics who have already seen the episode have leaked details on the internet about whether chuck or not is in the cia this season or what he will do with ellie, and other details. So even the critics cannot contain themeselves and NBC has also released loads of sneak peaks (7) and everyone is psyched so lets hope all is good and we do get those higher ratings. BTW I do not think it is cool that they leaked these details and spoiled what they spoiled.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hi Magnus,

Can you please set up a thread or discussion that asks fans to spec on what they would like to see from our characters this season. I mean I have been looking at other forums that have been doing this sort of and chuck, sarah, morgan, casey and awesome seem to be unanimously getting postive feedback. But Ellie seems to be put through the ringer, it seems that no one shares yours (and my) view that she was quite right to ask chuck to quit to be safe, fans seem on the whole to hate her for asking him to quit team b and some have even suggested to have her written out of the series! maybe you could rebalance the arguement.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Luke, I am not sure I want to do that. I find 90% of speculations by fans to be way off and they just annoy me. If people just paid attention to the show, instead of pining for things that will never end up in it, they could predict most of the things that will happen.

Before I had any insiders, I was able to predict most things accurately. In fact, it was this ability that made me an insider of this show. I was so accurate, people who work on the show were sure I worked on it. Some day, way down the line, I will tell you all the story of how it all went down. ;) Well, minus who I got to know etc.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks Magnus for your feedback, I must admit looking at the interviews with the cast they all look very happy (especially Yvonne, she smiled the whole way through) and they look excited so lets hope the next 13 are 13 times back six episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hi Magnus,

If Luke is sort of right and fans no longer like Ellie would TPTB right her out for the sake of ratings, I mean we saw last season how fragile our fan base is after mask would they risk losing ratings if fans turn against Ellie because she stands in the way of team b and chuck and Sarah. I want more chuck so I am ok either way.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Right her out?

This is why I don't put up a speculation section.

The writers don't care what Internet fans think. They lie to you. They tell you they care, but they don't.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hi Magnus,

Sorry I meant "write" her out, not "right" her out, my silly Iphone corrected the word and I did not realise. I was just asking a question because I love this show and after honeymooners I have no idea why some fans left or simply abandoned the show (it just astounds me). I know that the chance of more episodes is slim and I want more chuck, so I really hope that the message sent out that TPTB are going to give us an awesome season brings fans back and I know that they have to have some tension and drama I just want fans to come back and I see the best way for that to happen is do what they are doing and give the fans what they want and that is team b being awesome as well as chuck and sarah being awesome and if anything or anyone stops that from happening .... destroy them, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Some Internet nutjobs acting like idiots are not going to get Ellie written off the show.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Diane...

How could someone possibly believe that the ratings are tied to attitudes towards a character that doesn't even appear in every episode?

My ratings mantra when dealing with hardcore fans is this:

Ratings go up and down due to the comings and goings of CASUAL viewers, not based on what hardcore fans think. Hardcore fans ALWAYS watch.

Casual viewers are the people who watch some weeks and don't watch others. They aren't online analyzing the characters' motivations. They KINDA like the show, but don't necessarily have it on their MUST WATCH list.

Magnus, I agree with you about the promotion. Even as NBC promotes Chuck the last weekend prior to premiere, twice as many people will not have been exposed to a promo as were.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yep. Casual viewers rule the world. Fans tune in even when they claim to hate the show.

What the show needs is more scantily clad ladies... and more promos showing those ladies. That will get more viewers. :)

If CHUCK is promoted during tonight's NFL game, I will bump my ratings prediction up to a 1.3. :)
