CHUCK 4.13: Push Mix - Reactions

Did it live up to the hype (of course it did)?  Talk about it here until you find something better to do.  Expect episode SPOILERS in the discussion.

  1. So Chuck's decision to wait on the wedding, huh? Well played.

  2. IS IT TOO MUCH TO SAY THAT I AM CRYING?

    BECAUSE I AM.

  3. If this is where the questions go then will morgan do more awesome things like what happen in this episode. Also Jeffester RULES

  4. OMG!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME CHUCK!!! I got my wife in to watching Chuck and she has become a diehard fan. Tonight alone she has said "I just watched this to be watching it with you before, but I love this show now. The characters draw you in." Then after the show was over tonight she said "I've laughed, I've cried, I've gotten angry. It's an emotional roller coaster!" She really did cry when little awesome(Clara) was born.

  5. My gosh. I was in tears at the end. :)

  6. This episode of "Chuck" was AWESOME!!! Glad to see Chuck being badass by being smart!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Wow. That was as close to perfect as you can get! I couldn't have asked for anything more than we just got. Amazing. Awesome.

  8. That was amazingly fantastic. I adored that episode. And I see what you did there with Chuck not using a name while they get engaged.

Although he might have said something. We just weren´t privy to it. :)

Chuck was so incredible great in this episode. He really brought it. And I loved that everyone else helped.

Morgan was so heroic and funny. And I love how he, Alex and Casey are somehow a family. And Casey himself even helped by taking out a bad guy from his hospital bed.

Sarah and Mary really bonded and were so good together. I loved how Mary didn´t want Sarah and Chuck to end like her and Orion and how it was Sarah, who stayed to save her and made good on her promise.

And Mary being there while the baby was born was such a nice touch.

    I adored everything.

I think the original plan had Chuck and Sarah engaged by 4.11 and married in 4.13. Would love to find out, if that was the plan. I hope you are allowed to share.

Anyway, I can see how Sepinwall would say that this could have worked as a satisfying series finale, even while changed. But I have to concur with him on being glad it isn´t as well.

And thanks again for your teasers. They didn´t ruin anything and hightened my excitement.

  9. awesome epi. ill be watching this for a while. lol.
Some CS shippers are PO's about the proposal scene, but they need to get over it. i actually liked it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I enjoyed the episode, but it felt a bit anti-climactic to me. It just didnt' have the dramatic tension of say Other Guy or Ring II. I guess I want more heavy drama out of my arc finales.

Still, lots of good and enjoyable stuff. Just not the most epic 10 min of the show IMHO.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The proposal scene was perfect. We've heard Chuck make the sweet speech, and knew how much Sarah wanted. What's the sense in repeating that? Chuck used Casey's advice to a T here, in the middle of a hallway, in a hospital. Made it perfect, with it being the final closing scene.

    ReplyDelete
  12. @awelle, I don't think Chuck said anything to her, because after all, there's nothing left to say. He already said everything he needed to on the balcony. Sarah knew what this was about. And her acceptance was also simple and elegant: her jumping out of the seat and planting one on Chuck's lips.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You will hear my opinion on the episode tomorrow, on the podcast... but I definitely enjoyed it. Though, there were things I did not like. And Josh pushing those last ten minutes, like I kept saying, was doing the episode a disservice.

I didn't like some edits... a cut. And Morgan as the yoga master... nuh uh. Also, while on paper it sounds awesome that Jeffster is doing Push It... it just didn't work for me in the episode.

But Zac gave a very good performance and Dalton was amazing as usual. The Morgan and Chuck stuff was mostly very funny. The proposal (or should we say, they engagement?) was fine, other than the close up of that box (I laughed). And maybe they faded out one second too early. But Chuck had already given the best speech... no reason to go back to it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Amazing. Everything I wanted in a Chuck episode. This episode is what Chuck is all about. Family, relationships, comedy, drama, and action. Brilliant.

    Kyle

  15. I loved the proposal, you could see sarah shouting yes, yes, yes before lunging at chuck and kissing him passionatly and then on her knees with him, very emotional and well played by both zach and yvonne. I loved the episode, chuck was awesome, morgan, casey, sarah....you name them they were awesome and they all brought their A game! Now to ramp it back up again! I do not agree with the people who complain about the proposal... big speeches, perfect moments. That is just too tv and cliched, the way they did it, it was just a moment where they are together and it felt right and he loves her and she loves him and that is perfect! Loved the episode...great work guys!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah, the box was still ugly and shouldn´t have been that heavily featured. More of their kiss before the fade to black instead would have been nice.

I like the continuity of Jeffster following Ellie around for everything important in her life and it was short enough, that I didn´t mind them at all. Honestly I had pretty much forgotten they were in the ep already. :D

And Timothy Dalton is simply amazing. I am glad he isn´t dead. So he at least could potentially come back sometime.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think that you can practically cash that "Dalton could come back" check.... IF he is available. He is an actor that should come back, if for only one episode. He was just too much fun... too much evil... too much awesome to not revisit.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Was sooo good *-* Epic, epic, epic !
    I have no words!

    ReplyDelete
  19. As usual, Adam Baldwin was given virtually nothing to do. What exactly is the point of having him on the show? Also, I thought Casey and Sarah were supposed to have an emotional moment together. Was that the cut you were referring to?

    Popeye Doyle

    ReplyDelete
  20. Volkoff and his daughter in the season finale could have a lot of potential.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah, I'm happy Dalton being hauled off to prison leaves it open for him to make a return.

With Jeffster making an appearance at all of Ellie's 'big' moments is actually cool, and they got kicked out so.. plus for both things.

The ring box was.. just.. so ugly, Haha. I also wish the fade-out wouldn't have been as quick, but alas. No need in complaining over minor details from my end!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think he really enjoyed his time on the show too. That helps.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It still suprises me that these actors are just this awesome after 4 years! I mean yvonne's portrayal of sarah and zach's of chuck is still awesome! the on screen chemistry is still there in spades and the way they look at each other could come straight out of any episode in the series. Adam and Josh are just bringing it week after week and it is a testiment to this cast and crew and man I am getting emotional here, I now fully understand why sepinwall at the end of season 2 could not let go! I cannot let go, I mean they are so good! I love you CHUCK! Please never leave (or at least stay another 22 episodes after this season). Now to count my blessings, off to subway, toyota and any other sponsors to supports chuck, I will not forget to fill in the comments cards!

    ReplyDelete
  24. this episode was AMAZING... the show was great!! My fave moment tho of the show was more like the last 10 seconds <3 CHARAH 4 ever!!! I def wish that they showed more of the proposal, like Sarah shouting "YES", and the kiss could have been so much more epic... but all in all it was Great... Best Show, Best Actors, Best Writers, Best Directors, Best Crew EVER.....

    CUCK RULES-----> <3 Renee (@sweetren92)

  25. the proposal was amazing... nuff said

  26. Has anybody noticed that whenever it is a tender moment between the two he brushes her hair back......(Gravitron) I guess she really does like that.....Now all he has to do is tell her that the salmon dress from break up was nice, because although he did not mean it when he said he did not like it, she has not warn that colour again, just saying!

  27. Tell your friend Prezofbuymoria to not tweet such HUGE spoilers about chuck episodes, especially when half the country hasn't even seen the episode yet. No I haven't watched it, and I can't until tomorrow morning. and you spent all this time trying to make us believe that the moment in question was going to happen much later. You thought Sepinwall was bad... but Micheal (I believe his name is?) did it in for me. sucks.

(I avoided any comments on this blog while posting this)

    Kevin

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am not Prez's boss. You can tell him yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  29. How about Kevin not going onto twitter then.....ever heard of the first ammendment!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh great episode. Chuck being the new Orion was great.

Poor Ellie will never have another special moment without Jeffster performing.

In regards to your teaser for the next episode, after seeing Sarah in the belly dancer outfit, Game, set, match Walker.

    ReplyDelete
  31. After seeing that promo... I am not sure how any heterosexual male, or homosexual woman, can possibly CONCENTRATE RIGHT NOW.

Wow... Sarah.... Yvonne... oh trespass sweetly urged...

    ReplyDelete
  32. I thought that while it wasn't perfect, it was a great episode. The ending with Chuck's plan appearing to fall apart while it was actually falling into place worked really well.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm sorry.. what, Magnus? I was too..uh. Yeah. 4x14 promo on my computer.. can't really.. something about coherent.. eh.

    ReplyDelete
  34. What was that you were saying Magnus? I was slightly distracted....;o)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ok it is agreed, Chuck is the luckiest fictional character to ever live! anyone disagree with that!

    ReplyDelete
  36. serious with a episode so awesome like this one.
Chuck must have like 10 seasons!

    best show ever!

    ReplyDelete
  37. You rock chuck!
    congrats on Tangled.
NBC don't you dare to cancel such a show!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Magnus, you mentioned they cut a scene. I'm guessing it was the Sarah-Casey scene. It looked like there was more to that as Sarah was moving toward him and it cut to the next scene.

    -Jon

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ok, i'm slightly dissapointed in this episode. While as a standalone it was really fun, but as a part of an arc it felt like it left half of the stuff unresolved or just ignored...particulary Sarah side of the story got a serious short change.

It really felt like whatever plans they had for the arc half of it got scrapped when they get an extension, at least that how i felt when i was watching this episode.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Harku, that really isn't how it works... and logic should tell you that. If you get MORE time to tell a story, you don't suddenly tell LESS of it. That makes no sense. You are just projecting.

    Jon, yep. Sigh. WHY?!?!?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I have a feeling that the beginning of the next episode is going to be a shippers dream come true. Now I cant wait to see the drama of those two making it to the next step and the adventures of team bartowski. Can't wait for your podcast Magnus.

    ReplyDelete
  42. They cut the Casey/Sarah scene?!? That really sucks. I love their partnership so much. I hope the scene might make it on the DVDs at least. :(

    ReplyDelete
  43. Joe, I think 4.14 is going to be like Honeymooners in that it is the joy following the relationship shift. Though, I am not sure if I can agree with Fedak on it being like Honeymooners otherwise... but I haven't seen the episode and he has. So, it could very well be a Honeymooners 2.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The proposal was perfect, as was the birth. Both were understated and sweet rather than over the top and melodramatic with chars freaking out like most shows would have done.

Morgan as Yoga Hero in his tighty whities? Beckman with her "army"? Chuck solving things with his brain and a single non-Chuck Fu Intersect flash? Jeffster? Callback to Orion? Casey using a bonsai as a weapon? This is the show I fell in love with.

My one storyline hope for the back eleven stays the same: resolve the Kathleen thing with as prominent as Alex is becoming in Casey's life. But for now I'm happy to just smile, thank "Schwardak" for a great episode, and look forward to the return of Roan. :D

    ReplyDelete
  45. I was wondering if the big emotional Casey/Sarah scene had gotten chopped, because the hospital hallway with "John! Sorry." "S'OK. Good to have you back." really didn't fit the bill. Although with how she was moving towards him I was expecting a hug or something.

Hope it makes it as a deleted scene on the DVD.

And yes, at least we only had to see the ring box in closeup for a second before they hid it by focusing on the floor polisher. Whew!

I don't know that I'd agree it was the best 10 min EVER of "Chuck", and almost nothing could live up to all the hype, but it was satisfying on so many levels with most of the chars in a way that hasn't shown up in a while.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I can't believe how long the Morgan/lasers and Jeffster performance scenes were and yet they cut a poignant Sarah/Casey moment.

Thank god the proposal happened or Schwartz, Fedak, and Sepinwall would have all had to flee to a safe house. I did like that it was sweetly understated.

All in all it was really good episode. Loved that they let Chuck just be smart. Glad I kept my expectations in check though. Schwartz was just writing too big a check for the episode to cash. At least for me.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I loved it for all the obvious reasons but what really made it special for me was all the Orion acknowledgement throughout the episode. I got the chills with the message to Volkoff at the beginning (even though I kinda figured it wasn't really Stephen).

Loved Mary's jab at Volkoff about her husband dead or alive being more than a man than him.

I really loved the use of his cabin, and the symbolic reveal that Chuck is Orion. Oh, and "After all I am my father's son, aren't I?" was pretty damn epic to me. It kinda (just kinda) reminded me of Luke in Jedi giving the "You failed your highness, I am a Jedi like my father before me" speech.

I still hold out hope that Papa B is not dead. Regardless, I feel that they did his legacy proud.

I am really bummed that they cut the Casey/Sarah scene. You can tell it was edited just as Sarah was walking towards him. Guess I will wait for the DVD.

Now back to watching seconds 15 through 18 of the 4.14 promo over and over again.

Magnus, thanks for always keeping it fun.

    Vlad

    ReplyDelete
  48. Magnus, from the tone of the interviews, I think they might have meant that 4.14 was like Honeymooners in feel - very light and funny compared to the heavy, dramitic feel from the preceding eps.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It was a great episode, but some of the other sources could've been bit less generous with the hype. I still loved it, but would've loved it more without the ''best 10 mins evah'' stuff.

    -Melrache

    ReplyDelete
  50. when will we be seeing the "new" intersect powers of chuck and the intersect?

    ReplyDelete
  51. What makes you think he has a new Intersect?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I did not think the last 10 minutes were half as good as the first 50. Morgan on a Mission is so funny from walking in the flippers to only underware under his wet suit, then Sarah's coat fitting him. Rafe and Lauren knocked this one all the way to Russia they have proven to be the best writers on staff. What made this story even better was that they made it Chuck's plan and sold it. This was my favorite episode, I can die a happy but my computer might break from over use watching Yvonne as a belly dancer.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I loved Chuck lecturing his mother on the use of tranq-guns. Funnily enough I don´t really remember him trying that with Sarah at all.

The only thing that really dissappoints me is the cut Casey/Sarah scene. They do need such a scene. Their partnership has been a great constant throughout the whole series and I love how they constantly have grown closer.

Thinking about that, I am mad that the Jeffster stuff or some of that bathroom interrogation could have made way for that scene, but didn´t. :(

    ReplyDelete
  54. It was amazing! Epic and satisfying while also leaving me wanting more chuck

    ReplyDelete
  55. Unfortunately, lots of little things get cut for whatever reason while other things stay. At the end of the day, we have to remember that Chris and Josh make the show they want to see. So far, it has worked out well enough for us to stick around this long.

    ReplyDelete
  56. So since there's much woe about it hitting the editing floor, Magnus, any chance of telling us what was planned in that epic Casey/Sarah scene?

    Cor

    ReplyDelete
  57. It was a fun episode, I just wish that it hadn't felt SO rushed. It seemed like they were skipping over so many bits of the story that they would normally show, because they were already in ep 13 which was possibly going to be the finale, and they needed to get to the birth of the baby and the proposal. It made the episode not feel as suspenseful because they were skipping through everything so quickly to try to fit it all in. I almost felt like I was skipping through an episode on my TiVo using the fast forward button. I need to watch it again ... maybe I'll be able to enjoy it more on the second viewing. Maybe the hype just set my expectations wrong.

Also I totally agree with Magnus that Schwartz and Fedak should not have hyped up those last 10 minutes so much. I mean yeah it was good and Jeffster was funny ... but ... it was NOT the most awesome 10 minutes ever on the series. All the hype had me expecting those 10 minutes to create world peace and cure cancer.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Anonymous said: "I was wondering if the big emotional Casey/Sarah scene had gotten chopped, because the hospital hallway with 'John! Sorry.' 'S'OK. Good to have you back.' really didn't fit the bill."

YEAH that's a perfect example of one of those scenes that felt really rushed. That scene should have been something big and significant, not a 3 second driveby conversation/apology.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I keep reading people saying they "had to rush" because it was "possibly the finale" except they wrote this episode LONG after they had the pickup. So, you peeps are just projecting that. They had a lot of story to tell and 43 minutes in which to tell it. I actually thought the show took TOO MUCH time with some things. I would have edited them down (and left two moments alone and played them longer). Otherwise, I didn't have issue with the pacing.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I thought it was a great episode and enjoyed every minute of it. It did everything a good show should, it made me laugh and also get a little teary.
Just a wonderful hour of entertainment and kudos to the cast and writers.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I am pretty sure, if my memory is not completely bunk, that they had just finished filming Chuck vs. the Leftovers at the time they found they had a pickup for a back 11. I think they carried through on ending the story arc here because they had an outline done and a set budget for the first 13 and will probably get a different budget for the back 11. You could tell that they put tons more money into this episode than probably any other three combined. Notice the complete lack of super cheesy effects? Sarah's little gizmo was actually very effective and cool looking CGI - something I have not seen since season 2! That being said my only issue is that they could have cut a good 15 seconds off laser yoga Morgan in order to cover a bigger Sarah/Casey emotional moment. And to the person who said it, you are right - the entire speech to Volkoff was very Return of the Jedi. Of course that's one of the things Chuck does best and why I love it so dearly.

    Zman

    ReplyDelete
  62. To go a step further on what Schwartz said, I would say the final 5 mins was some of my favourite Chuck ever. I would've been over the moon if that was the Series Finale.

I have no problems with them cutting the Sarah/Casey scene as it wasn't needed. That little acknowledgement between eachother at the end was all that was required, because that's what their relationship has always been about. No words needed to be spoken. Sometimes I wish the show was a bit more subtle like that in general.

    ReplyDelete
  63. just a thought if Chuck and Sarah are actually going to be married will Sarah's dad be coming back?

    ReplyDelete
  64. I would be very happy if they do stand alone episodes for the rest of the series now! My dream would be chuck and sarah married at the end of season 4 and the final season 5 of 22 episodes is chuck being orion and taking down the rest of those major organisations in his dads cave, one villian, one episode at a time until the final epic last episode the 100th and final episode! Also would not mind if they kinda stole lost's idea and have flashbacks of casey in the season 5 episodes, because how long has orion been a spy on his own 20 years...how long has casey been a spy....20 years...integrate their stories in a unique way and you have a great final season! I love chuck!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I was a bit torn about ep4.13.
In ep3.13 Chuck shoots Shaw because he is about to kill Sarah. If anyone was going to push Chuck over his adversity to killing it would be Volkoff. At the same time Chuck's adversity to kill was made stronger because he was able to out think Volkoff. It was a GREAT EPISODE!!! I have no idea how thw writers will make another season climax to top this one.

  66. I enjoyed it from start to finish. The last 10 minutes weren't any better than the rest of it.

I feel tremendously sated after this episode. The last few months I've been a spoiler junky to distraction.

Now, I feel like I can ease up. I'll probably read spoilers, but I won't hunger for them like I have been.

    Bring on some fun episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  67. My only disappointment is that they seemed to have shortened the scene where Sarah first sees Casey again. It looked like she was about to give him a hug or something.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The episode was great, sure there could've been less of something more of another, but it got to the point in the end.

What I thought was amazing was the song choice at the end. The Naked and Famous song (Young Blood) was great. And the fact that they made the cheers at the end flow seamlessly into the sound of the floor polisher was quite funny, I thought.

So glad the engagement was understated. God if you covered the right half of the screen all you saw was a janitor. Ha!

When Awesome said awesome I screamed a little.

What was that spider thing in the first 5 minutes?

Magnus I keep watching the part of the promo where she says that at no point during the mission will she be dressing as a belly dancer. Then again I'm a woman.

    M

    ReplyDelete
  69. Zman, I believe they were shooting 4.07 when they got the pickup. There is no way you would be shooting 4.11 with 1 1/2 months to go, when they stopped at 4.13 in December. It doesn't take them 7 weeks to shoot two episodes. They shoot about 6 episodes in that time.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Chuck vs the phase three 1.6 I think
now Chuck vs the push mix 1.7
How is that possible the best episodes of the year to have both crappy ratings?

    What is your opinion?

    Nena

    ReplyDelete
  71. I have to say that I'm really flabbergasted by the ratings of a preliminary 1.7. I never expected Human Target to beat Chuck. I watch both shows, too, but I thought Chuck would be most people's first choice.

It seems that the more an episode is geared towards the fans, the more it turns off casual viewers. Or, maybe, people just have rejected the show for good.

That being said, I thought NBC's support for this episode was tepid. They made a decent promo, but it didn't run much. I was surprised by how few major newspapers and magazines featured the episode. It's almost as if the NBC promotional department didn't tell anyone it was a "special" episode. Only us hardcore fans seemed to know.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Heh... well, a friend of mine and I joked that this is what would happen with the ratings. I think part of it was that NBC promoted it poorly. But this is season 4 and the show should be able to keep its rating closer to 2.0 every week.

Time to move CHUCK to Friday night.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I know that the Friday thing has been thrown around by fans, but have you ever heard if that's a real possibility from any of your friends in the know?

    J

    ReplyDelete
  74. J, at different points they tossed around the idea of Friday and even Wednesday. I was told that last year they seriously considered moving it to Wednesday (I believe after the Olympics) but the idea was scrapped because they had used all their marketing money on the early return of season 3, so they kept it on Mondays. Friday has always been a possibility and with the recent success of FRINGE there, perhaps they should try it.

But a big part of me says NBC will never do it.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Oh and there will be no fan questions for the next CYT. It is taking up half the podcast at this point so, I will do another Dear DR soon instead.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Magnus, would you post that Alex teaser that you mentioned recently? Please?

    Herbert

    ReplyDelete
  77. Herbert... this is embarrassing, but I think I forgot what Alex spoiler I was going to post. Well, just ask about it when I post the next Dear DR questions blog. Maybe I will remember it.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'm also really glad they didn't make a big deal about Chuck popping the question to Sarah. I think this was much better than if Chuck was successful in ep4.11 CVT Balcony.

Can't wait for the fun, silly, and steamy ep4.14 and 4.15. I hope Morgan survives ...

I loved chuck’s last episode. It was great. But How Alexei didn’t realise the gun was empty. He had known that its weight...

    ReplyDelete
  80. A common thing in movies and television... if you have a 15-round magazine, it adds noticeable weight to the weapon. But people never seem to notice it. It happens on practically every show.

    ReplyDelete
  81. TS what chuck said in balcony was very beautiful and genuine, but proposing when you just know it is right because she is the right girl....well that is perfect too.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Unless your a delusional psychopath who is unhinged and does not know what time of day it is ! Volkoff was so emotionally compromised he did not know that he was beaten....he has never come up against orions son or is he Orion now

    ReplyDelete
  83. and one more thing How can I learn that is there any episode about governer???

    ReplyDelete
  84. Firstly , I have watched the 4.14 promo and the belly dancing gif an unhealthy amount of times .

    Secondly ,

The ratings have me baffled . Who would of thought that a new episode of Human Target NOT on it's regular night would have scored a 2.1 ? That just makes me ... well... baffled .Chuck did a 1.7 / 5.5 M viewers , down from a season high of 2.1 demo( 2 weeks ago ) and 6.1M viewers ( last week ) . I just don't know .

My heart actually hurts a little right now , on the inside .

    ReplyDelete
  85. I hope they save the Sarah Casey scene for the dvd deleted scene reel.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I think chuck finished at 1.8, but I have faith that it will come back slightly with these awesome next few episodes.....I just wish they moved it to fridays and let it breathe, but in the end of the day it does not matter as long as it gets through these 24 episodes (which I think it will: chuckandsarahwedding.com) and 22 episodes in the final fifth season! (now I am dreaming a little but why not)

    ReplyDelete
  87. J says ...

Loved the episode last night . Well parts of it anyways. Bummed about the ratings , but I have faith they'll come back up .

    RE: the move to Friday

My ultimate fantasy would be for NBC to cancel Chuck , but have Fox pick it up so they could air it on Friday with Fringe

    8:00 - Chuck
    9:00 - Fringe

That's a Friday night I'd be more than happy to stay home for . But alas my fantasy hall never come true :(

    ReplyDelete
  88. FOX will never pick up CHUCK. That isn't a fantasy, it is insanity!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Final Overnights Time:

It came in at a 1.75 A18-49. It'll round down to a 1.7. Why? Because if you take it another decimal, it was a 1.748. So close.

What happened? Last week, I noted a drop of the W18-49 Demos from the previous week. This week, W18-49(1.83) held near what it was last week. This week, the bottom dropped out of the Men 18-49 number.

    Men 18-49 went from 2.0 to 1.67.

I can tell you what happened, but I can't explain why. Bachelor and HIMYM got higher ratings FOR MEN than last week. Human Target did well--for Human Target--but lower than House did last week.

I checked to see if anything was odd in the station count or the U.S. coverage, but it was fine. No huge preemptions.

    Damn.

    ReplyDelete
  90. No worries... next week, with full competition, it will go up to a 2.0.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Oh and what happened? The Bachelor had a NASCAR episode.

    ReplyDelete
  92. "FOX will never pick up CHUCK. That isn't a fantasy, it is insanity!"

    J says ...

    INCONCEIVABLE !!!

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  93. Additional Ratings note:
While it was the lowest rating for A18-49 ever, it was not the lowest rating for "non 18-49's" by a long shot. But, that doesn't help much since older demos don't help that much.

The show's demos have been shifting older lately.

    ReplyDelete
  94. NASCAR? Nice catch. That'll explain it.

Idea: Maybe NBC's entire Chuck promo this week should be Sarah belly dancing looping for 15-seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  95. How does chuck continue to defy logic? is it the fan campaigns? Subway? loads of product integration where they advertise everything from fritos to cheetos to wet wipes to toyota, etc.....Is it the cheapest show going on network tv for an hour? I mean I love chuck I so Love chuck and I love NBC and WB and fans for saving it because we got the awesome season 3 and this awesome season 4 but in my heart I say it is because chuck is worth backing but my head says it should have been cancelled two seasons ago, so how does chuck keep beating the drop?

    ReplyDelete
  96. That was an epic episode..

But Magnus... I want to ask something.. I have just read something.here it is "Team Bartowski will be up against some particularly nasty thugs, this time of Turkish ethnicity. We’re talking cold-blooded killers, tall and muscular, but with a touch of humor. " for the 18th episode..

Well, as a Turkish, I'm totally dissapointed..
I never thought Chuck would be another American TV show that will look down on Turkish or display them as terrorists anyway...

and also I think we're facing a dilemma on "touch of humor".. does it mean they're going to be dolts, or fun men?

Please tell me something to remould me that it's not the same issue..
Please tell something to relief us(I mean Turkish fans..)

    Thank you...

    ReplyDelete
  97. So, Zeynep, sounds like YOU have a problem because you WANT to have a problem with it. No American is going to sit there and think "Damn, those Turks... such terrorists." Americans, for the most part, don't know the difference between a Turk, a Jordanian, a Pakistani, and an Iraqi.

    ReplyDelete
  98. and..well. no my problem is not to have a problem.. it's not that simple.. I mean yes you're right, Americans, for the most part, don't know the difference between a Turk, a Jordanian, a Pakistani, and an Iraqi but I think this is high time for them to recognize the difference.. we're no... anyway.. thank you for your reply.

I wish it's not gonna happen..

    ReplyDelete
  99. What am I talking about? Major correction ahead:

This episode was not lowest 18-49 ever. Phase Three was lower (1.66). They both get rounded to 1.7, but 1.75 is higher than 1.66.

(That's what I get for reading TVBTN headlines and not my own spreadsheets)

    ReplyDelete
  100. Yeah, the two biggest fan favorites are the lowest rated. So, stop trying to please the fans. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  101. You say i'm projecting, so it was always their plan to cut Sarah side of the story in this episode to such barebones? Even scene with Casey felt like it was cut short.

    ReplyDelete
  102. This was Chuck's episode. So, yes. It was always the plan to focus on him the most.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I know you are just kidding, but the content of the episodes doesn´t really determine the ratings, does it? I mean people who didn´t tune in, didn´t see it. So they must have not liked what they saw before or there might have to be some other reasons.

I was wondering why Chuck has started dropping in the ratings for it seconds half since it returned this year? It usually was rising in its second half and from what I could gather, that seems to be the norm for an 8pm show, as more people are watching TV at 8:30 than at 8:00.

Does anyone know what that is about?

    ReplyDelete
  104. I am wondering why chuck didn't wear his converse in the cabin with alexei. He had diferrent shoes on his foot

The 1st Half/2nd Half ratings can be deceiving. Ratings dip during commercial breaks because of people switching channels or fast forwarding.
The 2nd half often has more commercial breaks then the first. This is what causes the ratings drop. The number of people watching during the non-commercial minutes(aka the program) is usually the same in both halves. But, if one half has three breaks vs. two for the other, it can make a difference.

Rounding to one decimal also plays its part. This week's episode averaged a 1.75. Thus, the first half didn't have to be much higher to round to a 1.8 and the second half much lower to round to a 1.7.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I thnk people wants to watch chuck in the internet because no commercial no waiting anytime they want they can watch it. So chuck is the most downloaded show. Ratings don't tell that chuck doesn't watched

    ReplyDelete
  107. CHUCK is definitely NOT the most downloaded show. It was for like one week and yet people keep reporting on it like it is a year-round fact.

And people won't have to worry about watching CHUCK with commercials if it is canceled.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Chuck can be canceled??? It can't be!! NBC should consider all chuck fans in the world like us.
We can't watch the shows we can't get the ratings higher. What can we do?? (wegivecuck.com) anything else???

    ReplyDelete
  109. You want the truth or you want me to lie to you?

Here is the lie: OMG!!!! ORGANIZE CHUCK FANS!!! OMG!!! ORGANIZE!! WE MUST SAVE CHUCK! WE CAN DO IT!!!OGMMGMGMFHHFHFH!!!!!!!11111one

Here is the truth: Nothing. Traditional marketing still rules and NBC hasn't seen fit to promote CHUCK much.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Chuck should have been cancelled 54 episodes ago......just enjoy the ride and do not worry about ratings!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Dana, I think you mean very well COULD have. :) Anyway, outside of writing letters to NBC telling them how much you love the show, and of course tuning in and telling people about the show, nothing else is going to save it. You can rage against the dying of the light all you want, but it is like shooting a BB gun at an angry elephant. Whether you hit it or not, it is either going to trample you or run right past you.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Even if you go to Hulu right now (1:07pm Wed) and ask it to give you "most popular episodes", Chuck is in 7th behind, among other things, Human Target and The Bachelor.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Magnus you are right, I meant could have been! I feel very lucky that in effect we may end up with 65 bonus episodes of the show we all love! If we get a season 5 and 22 more bonus episodes I will be thrilled but if not I will be very satisfied with what we eventually got! I think the only reason NBC/Comcast will keep Chuck around is because of business reasons. The fact is and I have noticed this a lot recently for some strange reason....but chuck is advertising a lot of items, from wet wipes, cheetos, freetos, drinks, cars, etc..... Also Subway too, so advertisers may want to keep it around if only to have a show blatantly plug their product in and around the hotness of semi naked women! I love America! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  114. I have to say that is the strangest analogy I have heard in a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  115. And even Hulu isn't a great measuring stick for popularity. It is just a measure of what is popular on Hulu. It is those Nielsen numbers that matter and almost nothing else (though, those letters do matter, so write them).

People are going to run around like chickens with their heads cut off pretending like it will make a difference. It won't. You have what we need.

Oh and my analogy was brilliant. An elephant is not going to feel a BB gun sting. It is going to trample you or miss you one way or another because you have no ammunition that makes a difference. The elephant gun in the room is Nielsen families and they are not tuning in so what do you expect to do with a kids toy?

Anyone who thinks they can make a difference by just trying really hard to spread the word, WELCOME TO THE FANDOM. We spent THREE YEARS doing this before you got here.

  116. I think the best bet for a 5th season is if the NFL initially goes on strike this coming off season . NBC would be forced to have additional programming ( can't just play movies every sunday ) to replace SNF .

As long as the players and the owners don't come to an agreement before the end of May/summer , I think Chuck would have a good chance of renewal . Forcing NBC to carry a few more shows just in case .

As long as the show gets made , I don't care if they ever decide to air it . Just put 13 or 22 episodes on the S 5 DVD/BD and I'll be a happy panda .

nice blog by the way :)

  117. Will Carina and/ or Roan comment on Chuck and Sarah's engagement?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Even though I have answered this before... yes.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I hope, in the end of the day at least one of them is going to to be support them, of course after they done with thier digging and joking or whatever. I hope they get some support from someone
    BTW
I'm sure, that I'm not the only one who say this, but seriously.
A year ago, February 8. after the Chuck vs The Mask, when even the most positive shippers almost give up thier hope for Chuck and Sarah, and then someone told me, that one year latter, chuck and Sarah not just dating, but, they are engaged, and this is even not the season finale and they planning thier Wedding. well, I probaly send this person in a madhouse. LOL.
And now here we are. so to me this is the real pay off, not to mention if we ended the whole series wiht the " Guys, I know Kung-fu " line.

    ReplyDelete
  120. So really their nothen we can do. I guess we should be happy we got what we got hu

    ReplyDelete
  121. Magnus, you may not agree with me on this, but I have to get this off my chest: I absolutely HATE the Nielsen ratings system. In my opinion, the Nielsen ratings system is not only very flawed, but as the "only game in town" it completely monopolizes the way television shows compete for survival.

In my opinion, the American Nielsen Family audience is still too small of a sample size to really matter in today's globalized digital world of television viewing. Too many good shows have suffered nowadays because the system is outdated.

    ReplyDelete
  122. melwicker, it isn't about agreeing or disagreeing, it is that we are stuck with this system. The advertisers use it and the networks use it and it isn't changing anytime soon. So, we can complain until we are blue in the face, but our show will live and die via the system.

And there IS something we can do, tell people we know to watch and write letters to the network (check out the info posted on wegiveachuck.com). But outside of that, no stunt is going to save the show. Traditional methods will get us a 5th season.

    ReplyDelete
  123. In regards to Nielsen, this piece written by the head of Syfy.com is one of the best I've read:

"The truth about TV ratings, online viewing and sci-fi shows"

  124. Will Alex find out about her father's fling with Carina? Also, will there be a physical altercation between the two women?

    Herbert

    ReplyDelete
  125. Actually Magnus Comcast wants to change it actually. I head Comcast dont like nelsion and is working on a way to not go by it no more.

    ReplyDelete
  126. First of all, it makes no difference what Comcast or anyone else WANTS to do, the networks have been talking about a different way for years. It only matters what the ADVERTISERS want. They trust in this system and so as long as they do, the networks will use it.

Second, where did you hear this?

    ReplyDelete
  127. are you going to come out with a February month teaser spoiler blog post?

    ReplyDelete
  128. There will be spoilers in February but I will not do any more teaser blogs like I did in October-December. All people did was rip off my spoilers and not credit me. Doing single spoilers makes that more difficult since you can find them in a Google search specific to the episode. So, that is my way of battling straight up thievery.

It is either that or no more spoilers. Though, I am thinking about doing another Dear DR soon.

    ReplyDelete
  129. No they are finding a way to do away with the Nelsion and make it work for the advertisement department as well. I heard it on G4 and other sources i cant remember. I also heard that Comcast are big fans of chuck and want to keep it on

    ReplyDelete
  130. You may have heard a lot of things but none of those things are happening.

Comcast has expressed interest in CHUCK, this much is true.

    ReplyDelete
  131. How much would it cost COMCAST/NBC to purchase Chuck from WB , or buy a share of the show to partner with WB ?

Would WB even be interested in selling the show to comcast/NBC or even partnering with them ?

I can't see WB doing it myself . But Comcast now controls a lot of the channels that would be suited for Chuck if it were to enter syndication .

    My head hurts ...

    ReplyDelete
  132. I am sure WB would sell the show for the right price. But I have no idea what that price would be. It would be a lot more than most people would think, I am sure.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Nielsen is not going away anytime soon.

There are a few companies dabbling in ratings coming from set-top boxes, but--if they work out--it will be years before they may be accepted by all the parties that need to accept them.

They are more likely to be adopted as a replacement for Nielsen's local rating service than its national service.
