WARNING: This podcast is even more offensive than mine. Lots of adult language, but it is worth it.
Episode #068 Plus One Per Diem #68: Wednesday, August 24, 2011.
The portion with Zac starts right around the 50 minute mark. They talk NerdHQ, CHUCK, all about how networks and studios deal with shows (all stuff Zac obviously got from reading this site), religion, and much more.
Since no one else has commented here, I will... I think that is the most enjoyable interview Zac has ever done.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Funny, thoughtful and insightful. I wish I could think of something clever to arouse conversation, but I got nothing.
ReplyDeleteI loved it as well. Even though it did not feel that much like an interview, more like a conversation.
ReplyDeleteBut I really liked that because listening to everything Kevin Smith was saying was just as enjoyable as listening to Zac´s contributions.
This pod-cast was very funny and enjoyable (I guess that's what you get when you put 2 charismatic, talky guys in the same room)
ReplyDeleteAlthough i liked his previous Plus One Per Diem pod-cast more cause i'm not that much into religious talk and this one had plenty of that.
Well, I am an agnostic and fascinated by the thought process of religious people. I felt their discussion was informative while not being preachy. In fact, I felt their discussion of religion was pretty much a lot like what it is like listening to two big time nerd geeks talking about LOTR or the like.
ReplyDeleteWhen i was younger i was religious too but now... not so much
ReplyDeleteAnd even though their chat was way different,in a good way, to a usual religious-themed chat it was still religion talk for most part of the pod-cast and i can't say i'm excited about that
I liked how Zac talked about their last renewal and how he basically admitted that it was because of the syndication (unlike others who claim it was NBC's gift to the fans, probably Zac isn't planning to continue his career on NBC so he has no need to suck their balls)
Overall i think it was a very good pod-cast, interview and i think Zac proved once again he is something different from the usual Hollywood actor.
Probably? LOL! Come on, you are coming up with a pretty nutty theory there.
ReplyDeleteHe just tells the truth, it isn't because he has no plans to work for NBC or WB again. Why would someone his age want to burn bridges with anyone? Answer: he wouldn't.
i was just surprised Zac told the truth instead of using the "gift from NBC" speech like the others did but then again he`s usually more direct and honest then the rest
ReplyDeleteI didn't try to imply he is burning bridges with any future potential employer, sry if it sounded that way :)
As we have talked about before, Zac doesn't tend to BS the way everyone else does about these things. He was very honest about the potential of fans "saving" the show in season 4 and he is doing the same here. What is funny is that those who want to believe fans make a difference, ignore him just as much as they ignore me.
ReplyDeletePeople don't want to hear the truth. They want to enjoy their fantasy.
There is an interesting article over on spoilertv about the probems facing AMC now that some of their shows are getting older and more expensive. I think one major point that came out was a production company like the WB have a lot of power and some of that is due to the movies that they also produce.
ReplyDeleteThe WB can low ball Chuck to whatever price for NBC because they know they can sell off Chuck to anyone. I think the funniest example is how they sold off Southland to South America. They told South America (or countries within that region) that if they do not buy Southland then they will not be able to get their hands on the Dark knight or some other major blockbuster film and even if the South American countries never air Southland the WB still have made money from it, lol. So Chuck will go to synidication and it will get money from international sales and more then likely like Mad Men it may get bought for streaming (Netflix?) and also BLu Ray and DVD sales. The power of production companies never ceases to amaze me, lol.
I love how they can have a personal conversation without getting too personal or asking their guests too much about their personal lives. I think the funniest thing is how they said to Zach he should date either his 12 year old daughter or the 80+ year old Angela Lansbury, lol. What characters, lol!
ReplyDeleteI talked about something like that on the podcast once... how WB can afford to lose $150 million on CHUCK because they feel they can make $500 million over the next 20 years.
ReplyDeleteCult shows can do very well long after they die. And CHUCK is one of the biggest money makers when it comes to merchandising (this fact is not mentioned by anyone but me since I am the only one who knows it to be a fact). :)
"I love how they can have a personal conversation without getting too personal or asking their guests too much about their personal lives."
ReplyDeleteKevin Smith is a master conversationalist. His "Evening With' DVDs are some of my most treasured!
I don't think what Zac said about the syndication deal will remotely get him trouble. I can't imagine anyone at NBC or WB being upset by it.
ReplyDelete@MediaSavant I don't think it could get him in trouble either but you have to admit it takes some courage to speak the truth instead of pre-fabricated fairy tales : "Oh NBC is so graceful, they renewed Chuck as a gift to the fans, they don't care about money they just did it so the fans could get closure, don't forget to tune in for the new NBC shows" or something like that, like the others used in their season5 speech.
ReplyDeleteI agree Magnus, Kevin Smith is awesome ! <3 Silent Bob !
I just think it wasn't a big deal and it only takes courage to do something you could get in trouble for. It's not a big deal to explain the economics of TV. He was talking to someone in the business and it was an open conversation.
ReplyDeleteIt was a good conversation. I also enjoyed the podcast with Aisha Tyler also. They had a lot of chemistry and it was fun.
